Magpies Could Do Worse Than Signing German Midfielder

Lewis Holtby was a player Spurs signed 18 months ago from Schalke 04, but he didn’t really live up to expectations at White Hart Lane and he spent last season from January on loan at Fulham.

Lewis Holtby – decent acquisition for Newcastle?

Holtby arrived at the north London club having played for all of the german Youth sides and three times for the full German side, and at the U21 level he scored 14 goals in 24 appearances.

He’s the type of player Newcastle want to sign this summer – a midfielder who can also score some goals.

Lewis played a total of 39 times for Tottenham with 3 goals, and at Fulham on loan he scored once in 13 appearances but couldn’t prevent Fulham from being relegated.

Holtby will likely leave Tottenham this summer, and Schalke 04, his former club are said to be interested in taking him back to Germany.

The player said he wants to stay at Spurs, but another London club QPR may also be interested in signing him, and his transfer fee from Schalke 04 to Spurs was around £1.75M – so he wouldn’t be too expensive – and that’s one criteria Newcastle take into account on all transfers.

Holtby is an Everton fan, and his English  father Chris is a former British soldier, who was stationed at RAF Rheindahlen in Monchengladbach, and Lewis said this about his dad:

“My father was born in England and has been an Everton fan since the age of five. He immediately infected me with the Everton virus! Since then I have been an Everton fan and have always followed their games.”

Holtby has lots of skills and is a good technical player, and maybe even a loan deal would work for Newcastle, and Newcastle could become really interested in the 3 times capped German International if yet another one of our top stars – Moussa Sissoko – wants to leave this summer.

Some loan deals may be inevitable for Newcastle this summer,  if we cannot get our top targets to the club.

What do you think?

Ed, please don’t keep stirring about Sissoko. We don’t even know if he really wants to leave yet.

No thanks he’s rubbish, He was rubbish at spurs he was rubbish at Fulham why would we want him?

Sissoko won’t be going anywhere this season, he just wants some reassurances that the team are going somewhere (might be hard to convince)

    Have some faith Ed

Toonmania I totally disagree. Had a season ticket at Fulham, saw him play a lot. He is definitely not rubbish.
He’s might not be top class but is very useful and fights for every ball. Has more commitment that some of our players.
Know some spurs fans here in London who rate him highly.

Enough about midfielders. We really need a new back 4 and urgently need a couple of strikers or we will be risking relegation again.

Holtby is a class act. I’d trade all our players for this kid (all except Sissoko). He was a star in the German league. The problem is his ‘believed’ versatility. He is a creative attacking midfielder. Yet he gets pushed out on the wings or as a central/defensive mid. So if pardew gets his hands on him he better be prepared to play in defense!!
This kid needs a good run in a team in his best position. Spurs fans want him back as he’s hole hearted, got a great engine and is creative and skillful.

Kagawa, another who shone in Germany, is the same. Often shoved on the wings instead of behind the frontman.

the problem I see is we just signed de Jong who’s best position is behind the frontman. So holtby would be pushed out on the wing were he would be ineffective.

Ed if your looking to stir the pot with random Sissoko replacements then Fer at Norwich would be a better link.
