Lyon And St. Etienne After Newcastle Defender

There’s a report in Get French Football News today that Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is wanted by both St. Etienne and Lyon, and it’s almost certain the former Montpellier defender will be leaving Newcastle this summer, after only 18 months on Tyneside.

Alan Pardew has made the 25 year-old available for transfer, and while he played some solid games for Newcastle last season, he also had some very poor games, when he looked all at sea.

And that included the game at Everton last year, when he was hauled off at half time with Mike Williamson coming in and steadying the ship when we were 3-0 down, and we ended up losing only 3-2.

It certainly seems a return to French football would be good for the player, who has failed to adapt to football in England, and some of his weaknesses at center-back seem to be his heading ability and positional play.

Other French clubs said to be interested in the player are Bordeaux, Lens, Marseilles and Lille and it would be best for Mapou’s career if he moved from Newcastle, and he is still well thought of in France, after leading Montpellier to their very first Ligue 1 title two years ago.

Mapou still has four years left on his contract, and he played 46 times for Newcastle after being signed from Montpellier for €8M (£6.4M), and we will be hard pressed to get our money back on Mapou.

What do you think?

Comments welcome.

Note: Sean Borland has a student season ticket and since he will be away in Calgary studying for a while he wants to sell his season ticket for the first half of the season. The price is £140 – which is what he paid for it – you can contact Sean at

I can see occasions when Colback would partner Tiote but neither of them is a creative playmaker in the Cabaye mold and Anita doesn’t have the vision and range of passing as Cabaye had.

Some have suggested that Sissoko could partner Colback and Tiote but Sissoko’s strength appears to be at driving at the opposition.

If we cannot get Grenier then someone like Huddlestone or Carrick would be a good second best albeit they are getting on a bit.

I’m not sure that Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa would want to return to France. It would be a terrible admission of failure for him.

Also with his former team mate Cabella coming to us that should help him here.

We should always have four central defenders. If he goes we only have three and Colo is seeing out his contract. Curtis Good looks the most likely to step up but it’s a gamble if there are only three central defenders and no margin for injuries and suspensions.

Don’t get to carried away with this Ashley ambition view, as refreshing as it is to see us improve our offer up to the going rate it was probably done out of necessity as continuing as we were would surely have seen us go down, it was probably done to safeguard rather than to show ambition.

Seriously mate….are we still going over this ground. Do you really think Mashley would gout and spend 16 mill on a player with the view to just survive in the PL ??

News in the rags we’ve put a bid in for Eric Dier but don’t want to match the £5 mil asking price?
Not sure of there’s any truth in it but if we got Janmaat Dier De Jong Cabella possibly Grenier Rivière and and say Remy or Ba then hats off to our scouting team there

Colback is a guaranteed starter for me under Pardew. Pardew wants british players in the starting line-up and Colback is a perfect pardew player. Hardworking grafter with a good tackle.

His spot is basically guaranteed for me. i wouldn’t mind as i think him and Tiote in the centre would be quite a partnership. very solid and very hard to break down allowing our front 4 to roam at will.

slank at 2 having watched good in reserves and dundee u he looks more a left back playing in the middle than a centre back. good mbabu and streete are all sicknotes ,first 2 out injured at the moment and imo satka is the best a genuine defender who hasnt missed many games and although he could do with strenghthening up he has every chance of making the grade imo.

Totally not bothered about him going. He’s looked terrible at times. The game vs arsenal, last game of the season in 2012/13 I’ve never seen anyone not care like him. He was utterly careless with the ball.
