Newcastle Miss Out On Another Striker Target

Newcastle seem to be having trouble in bringing in some top strikers this summer – and even though that was our number one priority this summer – we still haven’t brought in one striker yet to replace the three who left us for different reasons in the summer – Loic Remy, Luuk de Jong and Shola Ameobi.

Enner Valencia – set to sign for West Ham

And news today that any chance that Newcastle have of getting Arsenal’s Joel Campbell on loan for next season could cost Newcastle a rather large loan fee, after he impressed playing for Costa Rica in the World Cup – so the Chronicle report suggest he could be too expensive – but surely Newcastle could arrange a decent deal with Arsenal for Joel – before letting Debuchy leave for the London club?

Papiss Cisse is still out injured recovering from that broken knee-cap,  and Newcastle have already lost out on former Hertha Berlin striker Pierre-Michel Lasogga who apparently told Newcastle at the start of the summer that he would sign for us – but then changed his mind and eventually signed for Hamburg.

And we missed out on long term target Bafe Gomis who went to Swansea.

We are supposed to be after Monaco striker Emmanuel Riviere and signing the Frenchman could even happen his week – according to reports coming out of France.

But another striker target – French striker Alexandre Lacazette of Lyon – is priced at €16M (£12.8M) – and probably too much for Newcastle.

And former potential target – striker Enner Valencia who plays for Mexican club Pachuca – and who scored three good goals for Ecuador in the World Cup, is likely to be signed by West Ham United this week for around  £12M, with the player said to have completed a medical yesterday in London.

Newcastle probably think Riviere is a better buy for around £6M – and we are hoping we can still sign the former French U21 striker soon – very soon.

What other strikers should we be after this summer?

Comments welcome.

Sean Borland has a student season ticket and since he will be away in Calgary studying for a while he wants to sell his season ticket for the first half of the season. The price is £140 – which is what he paid for it – you can contact Sean at s.borland@ncl.ac.uk

Interesting info on Loic remys release clause! £15m? That’s us out then

It has long been generally known that the QPR striker had a release clause in his contract but further details have now emerged and are being widely reported this morning.

It turns out that the much talked about £8m release clause for Remy does exist, but only for clubs in the Premier League top four.

If a club from the next two positions (5th/6th) then the release clause is £11m, then for the unwashed (those outside top six) including Newcastle, the trigger becomes £15m (Though obviously QPR could choose to sell at certain prices to whoever, these are just the release clause prices that would force them to sell).

I’m not sure we can miss out considering the club let it be known we weren’t really interested in him on the back of good World Cup performances.

I can see this being another sensational flop and waste of cash by West Ham. The lad has done virtually zero to justify the price tag, I bet if you had asked his club before the World Cup you could have got him for £4million.

    Average,
I only read that in the Mag, with no quoted source. Is the info from anywhere more reliable, rather than a sensationalist website where anyone can write in with an article?

    Jesper,
I’d imagine so, but if Ashley gives us a team that regularly gets into Europe then I couldn’t give 2 hoots if he does or doesn’t pay for his advertising!

Were we ever interested in Valencia or was it the press filling in an empty space in their newspaper

Why is it the press always say we miss out on this target or that target. A player is only a target if we are actively pursuing them. There has been nothing to suggest we were after Valencia except for the rubbish printed in the press.

I was going to post the same thing. I have said along that Lacazette’s agent has specified ‘Champions League’ so he can get a higher commission.

His agent’s view / tactic must be that if a club cannot offer ‘Champions League’ then they should up the player’s wage and the agent’s commission as compensation.

Now we see something similar but in writing in Remy’s contract.

Love to see Carroll back with us.

We will get back the player we sold and already made a lot of money lol.
Carroll will be more mature after so many failures.

    Jesper,
No, not Carroll, although I see that rumour has resurfaced again. I was talking about Valencia. I guess the Carroll rumours have started as West Ham have signed a striker, and we are desperate for one. 2+2 equals 5 from the hacks at the red tops I guess.

I’ve said it before, I wouldn’t want Carroll back unless it is for £5million or less and he was coming to replace Shola as the man who adds a different dimension off the bench if we need it.

Yes I find it irritating too all this missing out guff.

I suppose when Graham Carr goes to watch a match it then gives journalists an excuse to concoct a story. Just looking at a player doesn’t mean we are after that player and if he is sold to another team doesn’t mean we have missed out on him.

On Valencia, having watched his games, he seems almost a like for like with Cisse. Apparently Cisse’s recovery is coming along better than expected and may return closer to November/December.
I think Remy is still our No.1 target, with Riviere coming in as the third striker and Gouffran the fourth striker, we are looking good. Pardew will need to start bringing Campbell or Armstrong through this season, I think Campbell will get his shot in the pre-season and perhaps Armstrong is off to St Mirren for the season.
But with Cabella and De Jong in, there is a little more optimism.
Hopefully we can secure Caulker as Mbiwa’s apparent replacement, we need a player who can fill the void of Colo and having Caulker, a future club Captain, in this season will be ideal. Williamson you would think is the Defender likely to partner Colo if we don’t secure anyone and Curtis Good to get his chance, considering Good was already on the plane to Brazil before injury. The money may be there but we are still sticking to our valuations and not paying overs. Frustrating as always!
Also, is it just me or can you see Ben Arfa on the RW, Cabella on the LW and De Jong playing just behind a striker? with that much attacking threat, having Tiote and Sissokho in midfield would actually make a lot of sense. Both don’t need to create but be able to distribute to our 3/4 set of 3 and ensure they play fluid and in motion, could cause a lot of problems for a lot of teams.
My 2 cents worth as always!
HWTL from wet and rainy Sydney!

It would be good to see us go hard for Loic Remy.

Failing that we don’t need a striker as long as we have enough attacking midfielders. Barcelona were the first and it’s starting to happen all over the world now.

A “target man” isn’t necessary if you have a front 3 or 4 rotating. The “false nine” is when the number 9’s job isn’t as a striker, it is to bring the midfield into play.

I’m not sure if Pardew has the tactical nous for this however.

    Santon,
Why just go for a target man though? Lukaku is that and so much more, by all accounts this Riviere is meant to be a physical lad and good in the air, so if we get him there is no need for Carroll.

Not to mention that we sold him while he was injured, and he has been injured for over half the time since leaving us.

    Jesper,
Ha, I know, all very wishful thinking. Wouldn’t surprise me to see Wonga replaced by SD though.

Apparently Emmanuel Rivière is very good at heading the ball and rumour has it he will be signed this week, albeit there is very substance filtering through the media about it.

The Journal reporting tomorrow TOON are set to clinch a deal for 12-goal Monaco hitman Riviere, who will join a striking pack that will be beefed up further by Newcastle in the coming weeks.
