Get France Football News is reporting that their contacts are telling them Newcastle United have just lodged a new bid for Lyon play-maker Clement Grenier, who we bid for last January, but failed to get the Frenchman on Tyneside to replace the departed Yohan Cabaye.
Clement Grenier – Newcastle’s new improved bid turned down
Newcastle are thought to have bid something close to €10M for the player last January – but this most recent bid is said to be an improved bid on that one by the Magpies, but it has already been turned down by his club.
The news in France is that Clement wants to join a club who can offer him European competition next season, and at least at Newcastle right now – we cannot fulfill that requirement.
And it’s thought that a couple of German clubs are also interested in Grenier – with Bayer Leverkusen reported as one of those Bundesliga clubs.
While Newcastle cannot offer Clement European football next season, he will have seen some of the (very) good players we have already signed this summer, and Newcastle are at least showing some ambition.
And that could even tip the scales in Newcastle’s favor with the young Frenchman, and he can join Newcastle’s seemingly new revolution on Tyneside.
We also reported earlier today that Clement is now officially available for transfer from Lyon this summer, and will be sold to some club – and that it was a good opportunity for Newcastle to move in for him.
Grenier will be at a new club in September – and hopefully that club can be Newcastle United.
Clement Grenier would simply be a terrific signing for us.

I agree somewhat with the whole Pardew had that great season, followed by an awful one (mind I agree the amount of injuries were actually shocking, we finished top of the injury table comfortably) and then last season when he lost two of his star players and no strengthening was done in either window other than Remy on loan.
Now for me I agree its not 100% Pardews fault, but I do feel that last season a better manager would have guided what was a great start, into a great finish.
The whole back half of last season was nothing short of a shambles not only for the club, but Pardew personally given his headbutt malarky.
You cannot honestly say he deserves to be at the club based on January to date.
I also totally disagree with you about your dream team.
I would love for Newcastle to sign Grenier, he would be a dream signing for me. But I think we need a striker and a top class centre back more.
A dream end to the window would be Richards, Grenier, Hernandez in.
Out Obertan, RTaylor, Ben Arfa and Marveaux

Comment #4I think Grenier need only look as far as what we have done for some players careers….
Debuchy, Cabaye, Remy we have made all of them return to the France national team and Debuchy and Cabaye as starters.
Remy would have arguably started more games had he carried his earlier form in the season into a questionable second half of the season.
Grenier would be a massive coup, but from sounds of things Lyon are not playing ball, nor does Grenier wish to come to us.
Quality player, but in all honesty I rather have another striker that will score 15+ goals a season. Whats the point in a playmaker without someone to put the onion in the back of the net.

Isn’t this the story I mentioned yesterday with them saying we bid earlier in the summer? Not today? I hope your right as he could be the link that like gplf mentioned we need although I still think a striker should be top of the list closely followed by the purchase of a CB and if possible send willo/staylor on their merry way and bring in replacements for either! A winger wouldn’t go amiss too

Comment #9Ed – the only one I saw from French Football New was that we made a bid during the WC that was rejected.
I have to agree with others – surely a striker and commanding CB has to be the priority.
JFA from previous – When you get to Ashley’s level you simply don’t have time to get involved in day to day business. He sets financial limits, agenda etc. and employs people to implement them – IMO JFK couldn’t do this whereas Lee Charnley can. I do agree with you though it is a complete mystery why JFK was employed in the first place.

Shocking news mate. They should string the f****rs up that did it.
No gain at all for what they did. Some people don’t deserve to live in this world.
Hearts go out to their family, loved ones. Very saddened by this news.
I know its awful news in general, but for one of our own going to watch something like a football match or two to result in that just gives you an empty feeling inside.
Could have been any one of us! RIP lads, your in my thoughts at this time!

15+ goal striker that easy.besides, there isn’t much left to choose from, except lacazatte.so why not stop westing our time, and deal with the matter in our hands
Now ( clement),and promote siem as a
15+ goal striker ?

Comment #16If he doesn’t want to come, get wijnaldum in. Then push on with signing a striker and hopefully centre back. That would give us a good squad, plus the likes of Sammy, abeid, aarons, Armstrong, satka, Perez hopefully pushing for chances.

Hernandez should be an option for approx 10-12m max.
Better signing than Grenier for the club, and I am one of his biggest fans so it will take alot for me to say that.
Now if you added both it would improve us dramatically.
Siem can be used as a makeshift ST but 15+ goals? I do not think so.

Comment #18Absolutely tragic news. My hearts go out to every one of the victims and their families and loved ones.
To wake up this morning and read that two of our own were on there, and they were travelling to see the Toon play, well that just makes it personal.
I hope the club comes out with some kind of tribute, perhaps acknowledgement at the NZ friendlies or something.
R.I.P lads, you went out on the way to something you clearly loved and cherished. That’s the only crumb of comfort. R.I.P

Comment #20Love how Wijnaldum is getting love after the World Cup.
I have been saying sign him since this time last season. Possibly longer! He would have been half the price!!!
And the hilarious thing is he was used as a centre midfielder in WC when in the normal day to day football for club he is used as a Attacking Midfielder, who can operate centrally or on both wings, aswell as a striker if needs be.
Known about him for years, great player, great talent.

Comment #21Awful news about the two toon fans, as it is with the rest of the people on the plane.
I’ve been on that same route to Australia before. Such a tragedy. In fact, I only looked at flights there yesterday morning and that was the route that was shown.
It’s very saddening to see needless violence.

Comment #22Terrible news, condolences and thoughts to all friends and family.
Ethio,
As I explained to you before, Siem is not a striker. He even says that isn’t his best position. 15 goals in the Prem? He has never managed 15 goals in a single Eredivisie season before! He is an attacking midfielder at a push support striker, but we would be hanging him out to dy if we played him as a lone centre forward. Not quick enough, not strong enough. Without a top centre forward this won’t be a good window. Could argue same goes for top centre half. No matter how many good midfielders we sign.

Comment #23I think a striker is more priority than centre back.
We have Williamson, Coloccini, STaylor and Mbiwa.
3 of them got us to the EL spot only a handful of years ago.
In strikers we have Riviere and Cisse. I just have no faith in either.
Not to mention Cisse should be on ACN duty in the winter leaving us with one fit first team striker not only for the start of the season when Cisse is injured, but in the arguably toughest part of the season aswell going into, during and after the Christmas period.

Janmaat – Colo – Willo – Haidara
Tiote – Grenier
Sissoko – de Jong – Cabella
Riviere
Not bad at all…
A top class CB and an extra striker and we should be well prepared for next season.

You are a strange little chap aren’t you, buzzing in and out with some really bizarre comments.
You are not seriously suggesting that Reading and Sunderland etc had / have better squads than us in the last 2 seasons.
At one point we had half the current French national team ffs.
Do you remember the defeat at home to Reading when we were leading comfortably and then inexplicably in typical Pardew fashion, Marveaux was hauled off and all initiative surrendered, resulting in yet another home defeat.
Examples of this are everywhere with Pardew

Hernandez is not and never will be better signing than Grenier.he is a back up striker like Leon best.
Santon03
Think twice back and realize what happened.some players like ben, marv and santon underperformed big time when cab flyed to Paris, pards had no choice but struggle and push as much..
Bcoz he had little options to choose from
At the end settle with that position which is not a failure..

would love that team and as you say with another CB and striker to go with it. Nowhere for pardew to hide with that lot.
pawl
They may have got EL 3 years ago, but in the 2 subsequent seasons have shipped a record number of goals!
MYM has only been here 18 months, Saylor turns slower than a tugboat and makes shocking decisions, Willo hates anything on the deck running at him and Colo was once v good but has lost all pace and doesn’t even want to be here.
I would say a top CB was absolutely paramount, even if it was a younger player like Eric Dier, a bit like Martinez developing Stones.

Comment #30How many midfielders are we buying!
We need a recognized No9 and a striker – Cisses injured for first month or poss longer
We need a decent CB
I’m not complaining as I think the signings have been great but if we’re hanging our hopes on an unproven (in any league) Riviere I feel we may kill his career before it starts

Comment #40I would love Grenier but I really think we are crying out for a left sided player.
We have Cabella and Sissoko who can be effective attacking down the right.
We hae Sissoko, De Jong and Cabella who can be effective attacking through the middle
But we still only really have Gouffran down the left. We need a specialist left winger. Unless Pardew plans to turn Santon into a winger. But really Santon should be a RW.
