Newcastle United still have to bring at least one recognized striker into the squad this summer, after already doing some great work to bring six good players to Newcastle so far, and that has helped lift the spirits of Newcastle fans everywhere.
Christian Benteke – would be a terrific signing
And while it’s always a team effort to get these players into the club and Lee Charnley, Alan Pardew and Chief Scout Graham Carr are heavily involved in all the moves – Managing Director Lee Charnley is leading the charge for the club – and he deserves huge credit so far in his first transfer window as our Managing Director.
And we’ve said before that people like Lee, who are quiet, but are all business and get the job done are worth their weight in gold in any organization.
Aston Villa striker Christian Benteke has shown he can score goals in the Premier League, and he had a great first season at Aston Villa two years ago when he scored 23 goals in 39 appearances, but Christian didn’t do so well last season with only 11 goals in 28 appearances – but he was hampered by injuries.
We were first linked with Benteke last week, and there are reports out today that Newcastle are indeed interested in getting Benteke to Newcastle this summer, but a barrier could be he is recovering from a ruptured Achilles, and will not be fit until September, after suffering the injury in early April.
Newcastle have signed players on a permanent basis before who were injured – and they include Dan Gosling in 2010 who had an ACL knee injury when we signed him, and Ben Arfa in January 2011, who had sustained a double fracture of his left leg in the previous October.
In the striker department we current have new signing Emmanuel Riviera who is in the squad in New Zealand, and Papiss Cisse who is recovering from a broken knee cap.
And we also have Siem de Jong, who will probably wear the number 10 shirt and play in the withdrawn striker role, and this lad has looked great so far – and he could get us some goals next season.
But we need somebody of Benteke’s stature in the squad, and Aston Villa owner Randy Lerner wants to sell the club and it helps if the financial books are in order.
So Villa could be willing to let Benteke leave this summer, and maybe Newcastle can negotiate a decent deal – although it could be late September before the Belgian International striker is ready to play again, and Christian will not come cheap.
But we would just love for Newcastle to sign this 23 year-old.
