Is This Is A New Era At Newcastle United?

10:14 am, Sunday, July 20th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 106 Comments

Newcastle have so far done what they had to do this summer, and already have signed some very good players, and that’s surprised a lot of fans that Newcastle have done so well – at least so far in this transfer window.

Rangers v Newcastle United - Pre Season Friendly

Steven Taylor - 10 years in the first team at Newcastle

Newcastle still have work to do, and we need some strikers and a creative midfield player brought in – but the mood on Tyneside is lifting – but whether this is the start of a new era – we don’t know.

But it’s a bit like three years ago when we also had a very good transfer window,  and ended up 5th top – and if we can do that again next season and finish in the top six – that would be just terrific.

Steven Taylor has work to do in the pre-season to show he is still good enough to stay on Tyneside after a poor season last term.

The local lad has been interviewed in the Express and he says it seems like a new area at the club – this is what Steven has said:

“It feels like a new era at Newcastle,” “We knew when Yohan Cabaye left that the gaffer would have to bring in some new signings and it has happened now.”

“Quite a number of new players have come in and everyone around the club is very excited about the future.” “We are looking at the new season knowing we have some great signings and we are all looking forward to it.”

“You are seeing the start of a new era now at Newcastle and I’ve seen a few eras over the years. That’s what it feels like. It is a new start with great signings and you can sense the fans are getting very excited as well.”

“The new players have given a lift to the whole city. It is something we needed and it has happened.” “Everybody has looked at how we did last season and especially with results in the second half of the campaign.”

“We know we have to improve considerably from that.”  “I’m really excited about some of the new players. You see Siem De Jong and straight away you know he is class. If you give him the ball he will hurt you.”

“He gets the ball under control easily and has a look around, which is always the sign of a good player. He has got all the touches and he sees passes which other players don’t see.”

“We obviously missed a bit of that last season when Yohan left, so I’ve been very impressed by him.”  “The goal he scored against Oldham showed what a good finisher he is and I’m sure there will be plenty more where that came from.”

Siem de Jong has certainly looked good so far, but he was always a good technical player and scored some great goals for Ajax, and in 244 appearances for them he scored 78 goals – and that’s not bad for a midfielder.

We don’t know if this is a new era or not, but the fact that is the conversation this summer shows Newcastle are doing something right – and certainly we have signed some very good players for some very reasonable fees.

It would be great if Newcastle can break back into the top six again next season – and it’s possible – although very difficult.

What do you think?

I don’t think STaylor quite understands the word era.

ED the club publicly stated that they DON’T want Newcastle competing for cups so top 6 is out of the question

Must admit it is SDJ who I am really looking forward to seeing play.

    Bloke looks class

If Ben Arfa is out of condition what is Steven Taylor classed as.

    Jesper
So Benny should continue to essentially self destruct his own career on the off chance Pardew is sacked before the 1st of February?
All to teach Pardew a lesson?
And then not get a new contract anyway due to age and and wages?

How does that make any sense to any party? Surely it’s best for everyone for HBA to move on now?

I don’t think S.Taylor quite understands the word defend

    B&W

We will have more of a chance of challenging for a bottom 6 spot this season mate

  • 8 Graeme // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:25 AM

Bring in Dier from Portugal, sell Mr Taylor – both moves would improve NUFC’s back four. If we are lucky, we’ll get £5 Million for Saylor and spend it on Dier – therefore a “No-cost” improvement.

Stevie, we knew two windows ago that we should have brought more players in as well as a capable manager.

Hmm..take note Taylor….good control, good passing, reads and understands the game and most importantly good composure…unfortunately you possess none of these qualities Mr Taylor…

I’m sure there are a lot of words Taylor doesn’t understand mate

I can just imagine this lineup

    Krull
    Janmaat, MYM, Willo, Santon
    Tiote, Sissoko
    HBA, SDJ, Cabella
    Cisse/Riv

and then Pardew tells them to hoof it long ;)

Oh and what style did we play against Oldham? it certainly wasn’t passing attacking style?

  • 14 Black and White with an army lol // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:32 AM

pretty ironic Taylor coming out with that statement about new era and considering he’s the worse defender we have I’m sure in some way he was talking about himself and his level compared to the other 3

    Willo
    MYM
    Collo
    Saylor

yep Saylor it’s an new era for you mate because your sh!t :) end off

  • 15 willgrey // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:37 AM

Just because the club says they don’t want to challenge for cups or top 6, it doesn’t mean players fill the same way. I think if we start we’ll this season we can continue through till the end aim for top 10 but push for top 6

Tads…I think Benny is fighting fire with fire and he refusing to give in to this sort of harassment with the lack of a better word!

…time will tell what happens, but if he stays I think it could benefit Newcastle cause you never know what will happen within a season.

I like hatem a lot,he is important player for us.I don’t think he has worrying attitude as well.but he won’t pass the ball when he had to.no strength, weak defensively, that’s is why AP wants him to go.
If borini cost £14m,hatem should cost aleast £8m.

  • 20 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:46 AM

    Jesper
But how is? How is ruining his own career going to effect Pardew?
He’ll be 28 at the end of the season, he already stalled contract talks so the club took it off the table
How will HBA reach potential rotting in the reserves?

It’s telling that he hasn’t even featured for them, both Oberran and Marv did when sent there to regain fitness, Narv has regained fitness and has been rewarded with interest from other clubs
If a player has been told they no longer feature in the plans of the club then that’s that really
He’s not the first player to have been told that and I doubt he’ll be the last, the only question is does he want to further his career or be an Alan Smith

  • 21 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:56 AM

    Jail…then I don’t need to tell you :) I only knows German.

Pardew…wants new players buy I don’t think he will get that without flocking some…especially some on big wages.

Not naming Benny will hurt Newcastle. Do you think this is so black and white that Pardeu is right here? And even if he is not, which I think he is not, why all of the sudden the interest in Benny making what you think would be the best decision for him?

I think him staying would be best for Newcastle and if he decides to leave then good luck to him.

  • 22 jazzyp // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:01 AM

On Carroll I think there is a lot of resentment towards the lad for leaving us in the first place. Im sure most would agree that they were devastated when we sold him.
He was scoring for fun and most pundits were touting him to be the future England no9. The outrage it caused across Nufc blogs was unfounded, Yet years on there is still obvious hatred still towards the player.
I agree he is not worth 15 mill……..But then we go back to the old English overpriced debate. If Mcormack is worth 11 mill then Carroll is by definition is definitely worth 15.
As for him being only good with his head, I can remember plenty of goals with his feet from both inside and outside the box as well as showing nifty feet at times.
The truth is that his career has stalled through injury and in my mind would be the big stumbling block on bringing him back

  • 25 jazzyp // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:07 AM

The striker heavily rumoured to be Newcastle United’s main target, Alexandre Lacazette, is set to put those rumours to bed by signing a new extended contract to commit him to Lyon until 2019.

With fifteen goals in thirty six Ligue 1 appearances last season, Lacazette had become one of the most talked about young strikers in France.

    alexandre lacazetteHowever, the Lyon striker has now stated that;

“I will be staying at Lyon – I want to continue my development here.”

    This followed comments on Friday from Lyon President, Jean-Michel Aulas;

“We had lunch with him (Lacazette) and his agent yesterday and we’re on track to agreeing a 3 year extension. It’s for him to make the decision. He’s under contract until 2016 and he’s still a young (23) player.”

It looks increasingly difficult to see where Newcastle will sign a striker with any kind of credible goalscoring record to be the main focus of the attack. Emmanuel Riviere may prove a decent signing but his goalscoring record is nothing to shout about.

Figures of up to £16m had been speculated about Lacazette and while he scored 15 Ligue 1 goals in his breakthrough season, the striker had only scored 9 league goals in his previous 70 games (28 of them from the bench).

This summing up just how precious proven goalscorers are and the fact that Newcastle will almost certainly have to pay the going rate, both in terms of transfer fee and wages, to stand any chance of attracting one

  • 26 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:07 AM

That last part didn’t even make sense. Tads I’ll try again:

Do you think this is so black and white that Pardeu is right here? And even if he is, which I think he is not, why all of the sudden the interest in Benny making what you think would be the best decision for him?

I think him staying would be best for Newcastle and if he decides to leave then good luck to him
    is

  • 27 jesperfuglsang - captain of the lemon crew // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:11 AM

Jazzyp…didn’t Lacazette want CL football? Probably no CL club were interested given the fee Lyon was quoted wanting!

…he was never really a realistic option for us do you think?

  • 28 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:15 AM

    Jesper
The interest is we don’t have another season of the HBA debate which tbh is now null and void as it’s clear he doesn’t have a future
Him Marv Jonas Obertan all big earners who don’t feature or don’t offer anything to the team
If Padrew wants new players then it’s in the clubs best interest to shift them out and in fans best interest to see some young exciting players who would feature bought in, even if it’s only 1-2 players we can get through there wages it’s still adding to the squad as those four just aren’t used and won’t be
No longer care who’s fault it is HBA is overweight or banished to the reserves the over riding point is he is and no longer has a role in the tea and absolutely nothing to gain rotting in the reserves all he is doing is hampering his chances of signing for a decent club, at the end if his contract he will of missed nearly 3 seasons of football, that won’t impact Pardew at all and given the signings made I doubt it will overly impact the squad, in fact given the signings and Benny’s demotion it fully suggests Pardew still has MA’s full backing, i doubt he’ll lose any sleep about HBA’s current dilemma otherwise he would of intervened by now

  • 29 jazzyp // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:15 AM

    Morning Jesper
Unsure mate as it was quoted that we had originally agreed a fee for Lacazette but like you say he wanted CL football.
At the end of the day if the player is under contract he has the right to stay, And maybe Lacazette see’s more of a future at Lyon than starting a new era with NUFC

  • 30 bladeuser // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:17 AM

you aint wrong on carol its an injustice to him to say he is only good with his head

i don’t think it would be good for him to come back
his outside life could become a problem back home

15mill is far to much if we wait a 18mnths we could prob sign him on a free he would still have to take a pay cut to come

are the hammers willing to sell him i bet fat sam don’t wanna sell him even though he has to entertain, he still has to win as well

Did you get the Violent thunderstorms yesterday mate ??

Again on Carroll I don’t believe we would be offering 15 mill for big wor Carroll when that fee would surely tempt Dortmund to part with Pea.
I feel sorry for the abuse he’s getting as a footballer when on his day he is unplayable..The injuries and knocks the lad keeps picking up are blighting his career which is therefore damaging his progression.
My worry mate is that we are fast running out of options for a top CF unless Carr has another gem up his sleeve

We really do have to strengthen at the back – surely our GA tells us we are seriously deficient there. I’d rather have a mediocre CF and top class CB if we are still spending and the wallet hasn’t been snapped shut.

If the story is true that Mash wants us in 4-5th place and Pardew really did say ‘but we haven’t got the players’ then we still need at least two or three purples.

I think we should maybe take the gamble on getting Benteke in, I know he is injured at the moment but , he is proven in the premier league.

At the moment we have Riviere who can play that main striker position, with Siem de Jong playing just behind him as a No10. With Gouffran left and Cabella right I think we have enough there to get us the goals we will need until January.

Benteke will need plenty of time to recover, but being injured should mean we can get him cheaper maybe 10 – 15 mil. We amy be looking at the end of this year before he can start training again, then a couple of matches with the development squad to get him match fit so December or January before he is ready for the first team.

If he stays at Villa and get back for them in January his value will be in the 20+ mil range.

For us we have Riviere, Cisse (back around end of September), Perez and Armstrong at a push, so we should have enough to get us through until January.

It’s a gamble on Benteke, but one I think will work for us in the long term.

Last season there was little to no service for our strikers. Does anyone else think Pardew might stick with Cisse? Don’t get me wrong, we desperately need another 2 strikers IMO, but with de Jong, Cabella, Janmaat , we have a lot more creativity there attack wise and to me with these players Cisse will come good given the chance. When he first signed, some of those goals were sublime, you can’t teach that. the entire squad was low on confidence, Cisse more than most and with decent service, I am confident he will re-discover his form and confidence. I know its been a long time, just my feeling!

  • 81 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:43 PM

Well on this whole ben arfa topic I am quite franky sick of the lad. I had a lot of sympathy for him during last season but he is no good anymore.

Having watched the way the chillian lads and other south american sides play there is no reason that having flair/skill should mean you don’t work hard on the pitch for the team, closing down, chasing back, hassling the opposition, making attacking runs to help the team even if it’s just to open spaces for others….he doesn’t do enough of that and if he did he’d be a phenomenal player as he has all the tricks/ability you could ask for.

The way he has carried on after being dropped isn’t good enough either. I’ve had similar experience in amateur sport, took time out over the off season to get fitter, quicker and stronger and to work on technical aspects of my game to make sure I could show the team it was a mistake not to pick me…coming back 2/3 stone over weight is pathetic when all you have to do with your time is train and be fit.

Good riddance to a lad who could have it all if he wanted, it’s shame to see him waste it all.

Also want to say pardew isn’t blameless but for all we know he could have told benny what he needs to do to get back in the side and he hasn’t….or maybe Pardew just washed his hands of him too soon, we don’t know….but ben arfa has not helped himself this summer.

for me cisse didn’t have the all round game what suited the team last year, with these new players we might be able to play well with cisse in the side and give him chances to get goals…guess we’ll have to wait and see how we shape up over the next couple months.

  • 84 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:50 PM

    Sage

I agree. Pace and power down the flanks from Cabella Sisssoko and Riviere allied with De Jongs ability to thread a pass should provide a plethora of chances for him.

All he needs to do is learn the offside rule

  • 85 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:51 PM

    expat

I initially thought cisse was unlucky with the offsides, he was making good runs and the pass was always late.

But after a few weeks of that he needed to learn that the team weren’t capable of spotting and playing the early ball so he should have adapted himself and just delayed the runs a touch, give himself a chance.

  • 86 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:54 PM

transfer sage – thats my gut feeling. to be honest I actually find it a bit irritating how a lot of fans basically now say he’s garbage, much like they did with Luuk de Jong. What happened with the team last season was humiliating for everyone but I don’t think any of the players can be singled out….they were all pathetic, not just Cisse. Also, Luuk de jong (I’ll sound like a broken record here as I’ve said this on here before) he had an impossible task. Coming in to a team ultra low on confidence, no creativity and under a manager struggling to motivate and manage…I strongly believe even Messi would of struggled to shine in that team!

What you say on Ben Arfa, I mostly agree. However, I do wonder if under a better manager he would have flourished. If he was at Man U under Fergie I don’t think he’d of dared come back overweight and Fergie would of ensured that this wouldn’t happen I think!

  • 87 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:56 PM

    Sage

When fit, i would stick him straight back in. He is a natural predator and once he gets a couple of goals, more will follow

  • 88 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:57 PM

haha…. Cisse offside must test even his biggest fans. Poor awareness or perhaps like Sage said, too intelligent with his runs for the rest of the team? Xavi, Iniesta, Mata and the like would have perfectly timed through balls going through the middle no doubt

  • 89 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 1:59 PM

expat… my thoughts exactly. Given chances, Cisse will score and with de Jong and Cabella in the side there’ll be no excuses if he doesn’t bang them in. Definitely a make or break season for Cisse

  • 90 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:01 PM

Exactly, I think there were few good performances from either players or manager last year, certainly none were consistent over the year. De Jong barely had a kick for half a season in Germay then came to a team that couldn’t buy a goal, like you say anyone would have struggled.

On Ben Arfa I take what you say about Fergie but it also helped he was man utd manager and the players know they’d not get more money or more trophies anywhere else…so that also will have helped keep them in check and work hard, also they are easy to replace at clubs like man utd, stacks of money and 99% of players will go there if offered the chance, so always on your toes….we never bought anyone last year so players know they don’t have massive competition for places.

Ben arfa has had an average career, lots of medals in france but a modest goal/assist tally compared to other top players in that league. He’s fallen out with all his teams or managers so why did we think it would end any different here.

Then that’s down to his attitude for me not the manager, it shouldn’t be about fear, at the end of the day Pardew is the gaffer if he tells him to do x y and z then he should do it

  • 93 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:06 PM

If we want to improve the squad further, it will mean we have to get rid of the high earners first.

It is noticeable that besides HBA missing from the NZ squad, marveaux obertan ferguson and bigi are also out. Clearly they are not going to be used this season so undet the 25 player restriction and obvious salary cap budget, i dont expect anymore incoming until they are moved on

  • 94 Mr Funk // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:07 PM

    @ Jesper

You are right that this is Realpolitik. But in the sense it is a chance for the west to castigate an enemy, when the west (USA) did the same the reaction then was that it was a tragic accident.

Also what is Russia suppose to learn?

  • 95 Shot Bru // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:09 PM

If HBA has had such a poor reputation for being a trouble maker at previous clubs along with average goal/assist stats etc…then surely Carr and Pardew are as much to blame as HBA for signing him in thee 1st place…I guess hindsight is a wonderful thing…

  • 96 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:09 PM

transfer sage….you just know if we sell him, which seems likely, he’ll get his act together elsewhere. Sadly I think he’s came to NUFC at the wrong time and under wrong manager. If he was around in the 90’s under Keegan probably would be a legend. You just can’t accomodate a player like him nowadays like you say. You watch Barca, Bayern, teams at world cup…in the modern game every single players works there arse off and rightly so given the money these guys earn.

On a separate note, I am genuinely touched at the charity money raised by those 2 sunderland fans. I wonder if in the long run this might weaken the so-called hatred between NUFC and SAFC fans? So its a bit more friendly like Everton-Liverpool type thing? Funny how these things pan out. I would personally very much like that, far too many idiots around in the toon on derby day and no doubt in Sunderland also. My Grandad was a Sunderland fan and though it pains me to say it, he took me to my first ever match when I was 6…at Roker Park!!! Luckily my Uncle took me under his wing and I’ve been NUFC ever since, but I for one do not ‘hate’ Sunderland…and in light of recent events and the football community, shouldn’t be too many out there who do now either

Thanks, been reading the odd headline and a couple comments here and there but it’s silly season now in football and the rumours just seem to create more arguments so not too bothered being here much until the season starts.

So far the transfer window is going well, sold to buy but at the end of the day the total money spent isn’t an issue for me, it’s getting good players what we need…we have done well.

  • 99 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:12 PM

TADS…yes, but I guess we don’t know what Pardew has said to him. He may have just totally neglected Ben Arfa the last few months for all we know. So no x y z for him to listen to if yer get me drift. Just a point, I actually think its down to poor attitude / unprofessionalism like you say, but we don’t know exactly what goes on behind the scenes at our club these days

  • 100 Transfer Sage // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:12 PM

    shot bru

Maybe, but they took a gamble on a player and maybe that’s why he was loaned first, see how he’d behave and get on with the group.

He had a good few years, entertained the crowd, won us a few games himself and score memorable goals….so probably worth it in the end.

  • 101 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:13 PM

Well for me Newcastle have made some goodsignings but it would be a shame if they did not finish the job off
Firstly I would bring Pablo sarabia in ,he is a Spanish under 21 player can play either wing or through the centre ,two footed and makes Ben arfa look terrible
He is tricky fast and plays killer passes constantly ,for me he will go on to become Spain’s greatest player ,he has everything in his locker ,goals assists and he is great to watch ,he is available for arouaround 4 million ,how this player has not been snapped up I will never know
Then I would bring in Andy Carroll on 80 k a week and according to him he would take a pay cut
I would only pay 10 million for him not a penny more ,but he is Geordie ,holds the ball up very well and he scores from corners and set pieces something we really struggle with
Back on form there is nobody better
I would also sign welbeck ,not the most popular choice but he can play on the wing or as a striker ,I think with these and the current strikers we
should have enough goals in the team

  • 102 mikeashleyisamackem // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:14 PM

Then I would promote youth players in defiance and go with what we got

  • 103 Sliema // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:18 PM

Forgive me. I can’t really back this up with anything credible. Also I think I’m probably contradicting an earlier post when I was feeling a little peed off with him… But I still have faith in Cisse and he ‘might’ just come good again this season.

The problem is I thought this at the start of the last 2 seasons.

But we should, we should create more this time around. I’m going out on one here and saying hell score 16 this season in all comps. (bearing in mind he’s injured plus ACON duty too)

    C’mon Papiss!!!

  • 105 geordie abroad // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:03 PM

I Agree with needing a first choice striker (not Carroll ) and a CB or 2 (would love to see nastasic and rajkovic here). However if marveaux and arfa are on the naughty list and unlikely to play again, and obertan and guti are not good enough then we will be short on wingers as well. As these players are sitting tight and appear unwanted anywhere, then The club needs to be looking at bargain buys or loans in this department. Players like Zaha, Moses, Sinclair are all viable loans although none impressed last season. I’d like to see dejagah here, best player at fulham and for Iran in World Cup, hard worker with skill and able to fill a few attacking position plus he wouldn’t break the bank. Atsu on loan from Chelsea would be good too.
