Newcastle’s Chances Of Signing Clement Grenier Improve

10:10 pm, Sunday, July 20th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 48 Comments

Newcastle United need only another (say) three players to make this one of our best transfer windows for many years, and there is good news from France that Lyon President seems resigned to losing Clement Grenier this summer, and he would be a terrific replacement for the departed Yohan Cabaye.

Clement Grenier – Newcastle chances of signing Clement improve

And to think what Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella and Clement Grenier could do to opposing defenses in the Premier League next season – with their level  skill and creativity – the mind boggles.

On Saturday this is what Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas said about both Grenier and defender Umtiti, who may also be a Newcastle target:

“At the end of May, the agents of Clement Grenier and Samuel Umtiti told us that their clients envisage themselves playing elsewhere.”

“A release amount has been agreed as per their demand. But that is not to say that they will definitely leave”

And there was news just last Friday that Newcastle had lodged an improved bid for Grenier but that Lyon had turned that down, so there is some evidence that Grenier is still a Newcastle target.

And there are reports that Newcastle have been told it would not take that much to sign the 5 times capped French International, with quotes of around €10M – which is about £8M.

And that’s close to what Newcastle paid for Remy Cabella, although Lyon are still officially holding out publicly for around €15M (£12M) for Clement.

But isn’t that what Montpellier were also hoping to get for Remy Cabella?

And while that seems a fairly low fee for Grenier – surely Newcastle can (will?) move in now to try to get Grenier to Tyneside?

In the past there have been noises coming out of the Grenier camp that he wants to join a Champions League club, but he will have seen some of the good players Newcastle have already signed this summer, including his French International colleague Remy Cabella, and Newcastle are at last showing some real ambition.

Or at least it looks that way.

It seems that Newcastle may have a really good opportunity to sign Clement Grenier – and he would be an excellent signing for us – especially at the price quoted.

Comments welcome.

is anybody else scared at the prospect of a jewel player like Cabella being asked to defend, and thus lose his quality? :(

Belhanda must be worth a punt at this stage. I’d say he’s itching to get out of the Ukraine. Could go a bit cheaper if he tries to force a move

    Repost –

What is the point of finishing fifth if we defend for our lives for most of the game?

That’s pretty much what it was for the vast majority of the games. Finishing with a goal difference of plus 5 and with a number of clean sheets tells its own story on how Pinocchio approaches games. All those off the line clearances by Simpson just shows how fortunate we were, plus the fact the ball was continuously in that danger area.

No surprise that when the enthusiasm is sapped from the players playing this way, there is no clue of how to attack and move because we don’t show anything other than brief glimpses of it at the best of times. Which, through probability is bound to occur anyway.

Defending for your life football, which isn’t even done well, is not the type of football I want to see us play. Nevermind with the technical players Carr has brought in.

Nothing has changed. P45DUE out immediately.

Get French Football News exclusively revealed this week that Newcastle United had a bid turned down for the central midfielder for an unidentified amount that was judged to be too low by Lyon but also insufficient for Clement Grenier, who wants a club with realistic chances of European football in the coming years, according to a source close to the player. Newcastle retain their long-term interest in the player.

Contrary to wayward and inaccurate reports circulating today that Clement Grenier is available for between €8m and €10m, Get French Football News can confirm that Lyon will not sell Clement Grenier for anything less than €15m, and that the club is not actively seeking to sell the player at all.

    Our illustrious owner speaks

Sums him him to a tee the cheapskate kunt! Outstanding value? No sooner have people put them on they fall apart….excellent value that! Fcuking fat horror!

Who do I most admire on the high street? That’s easy – Primark,” Mr Ashley told analysts.

“I admire their relentless focus both on their customer and their operating model. They offer outstanding value and are continually enhancing their products for customers. They are a great retail operator in today’s market place.”

  • 16 Belfast // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:34 PM

€15 million? That seems much more realistic Sazzer.

That Nufcfans mob are always talking trash like.

Yes. So we will see if the board are prepare to pay that much and if Grenier realizes that moving here wouldn’t be all that bad.

  • 25 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 10:57 PM

The day we sign grenier will be the day we will have happy people on this blog

  • 26 toonincheek // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:03 PM

I thought I read (2-3 months ago) that Grenier
was injured – not expected to be fit again until
    Oct/Nov time.

    Anyone else recall that?

  • 29 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:11 PM

    Good evening beermonkey

He’s gone on loan, Ben Davies looks like another one leaving, I can’t believe it could be for 10 million.

  • 30 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:13 PM

I shouldn’t talk about swans on here anyway always get told off by some muppet

  • 31 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:16 PM

I read Tottenham swap Sigurdsson + 5 m for Vorm and Davies.

And they loaned out Michu to Napoli for some reason.

  • 32 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:21 PM

it is Sigurdsson but not vorm

  • 33 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:23 PM

Sigurdsson was brilliant when swans had him on loan few years ago.

  • 34 beermonkey // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:24 PM

    welsh

what was the reason for the loan

    anything to do with monk

  • 35 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:26 PM

    Welsh
Who are the targeting as replacement for Davies? And if there is anything in the Vorm deal?

    Michu out and Sigurdsson in.

  • 36 Whumpie // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:28 PM

I know I’ll get slaughtered for this but: how would we use Grenier with all the other players? Who would you leave out?

Doesn’t ring true to me this one.

  • 37 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:30 PM

there were stories that there was a split in the camp.

  • 38 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:31 PM

That’s why a few Spanish players can leave

  • 39 welshgeordie9 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:37 PM

    Whumpie

De jong and Cabella are our best creative players, if one of those get injured then we can use grenier plus it would make the other two work a lot harder for their places and we need good options on the bench, we didn’t have strength in depth last season.

  • 40 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:42 PM

@Thump – well said (on last thread), listing things like that makes you think just how many problems there are with Pardew.

The suppression of ambition is the worst for me- for a sporting club that is heinous.

  • 41 geordie157 // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:43 PM

Dier, grenier or wijnaldum and a striker. Plus Jonas and hopefully obertan out would equal a great transfer window.

  • 42 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2014 at 11:53 PM

    Whumpie
There are different possiblites and if we want squad depth some quality players will have to be on the bench. That’s only way to survive getting hit by injuries along players who can play in different positions.

I wouldn’t cry if Colback, Anita and Tiote started on the bench.

  • 43 Sazzer // Jul 21, 2014 at 12:03 AM

We need someone like this. We don’t have that.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KwMDfKXUNFY

Grenier isn’t as good defensively but Grenier got the vision and ability to hit the ball like the best of them.

  • 44 gazzaforever // Jul 21, 2014 at 12:55 AM

Grenier is always injured and only good at freekicks. I dont rate Cabaye as high as you lot are , but he s way better than Grenier so stop comparing them.

  • 45 gfp13 // Jul 21, 2014 at 1:11 AM

May as well try and get a deal for both grenier and umtiti while we are over there. Samuel umtiti is a young defender, good enough to play already and with further potential. A striker in and it would be a very productive summer window. And then give us until January to assess what needs to be changed and go from there

  • 46 WestOzMag // Jul 21, 2014 at 6:42 AM

Hey Ed, have you thought of including the faces of John Alder and Liam Sweeney in your banner as a dedication to their memory?

  • 47 nufc 11 // Jul 21, 2014 at 10:34 AM

Collo, Santon and Taylor were awful last season one of the worse back lines out from Krul, Willo and Debuchy in the league. Remy and Cabaye kept us up with the early wins we got from Aug/Dec. We need an leader to lead Willo and organize the full backs they were like a bunch of clowns falling over themselves drunk at times last season its a must area to strengthen has to be actually and if AP doesn’t address it it will really show how inept he really is. Caulker would be a good start maybe Dawson id like us to go back in 4 Pieters to fill LB/CB

  • 48 geordieboy1212 // Jul 21, 2014 at 6:57 PM

Grenier has always stated that he does not want to be a Cabaye replacement and here he is! I can’t see anymore summer business by newcastle, the players were looking at are too expensive and if we sign them will bring our spending above the £50m mark.. What happened to benteke?
