Six New Players In So Far For About £27M – A Bargain

2:31 pm, Sunday, July 20th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 277 Comments

It seems that most Newcastle fans are in just a little bit of shock because of how well the new era under new Managing Director Lee Charnley has started off at Newcastle, with the club already making six good signings  by mid-July and there’s still around six weeks left to get the three or four players we still need to make this one of the best transfer windows for a long time.

daryl janmaat st james park pitch

Daryl Janmaat – a bargain at just £5M

It’s just what the Newcastle fans needed, so we can rekindle our hopes that Newcastle are building a good side again after two poor seasons in the Premier league.

It augers well that Lee Charnley seems to have made such a good start as the lead man on transfers at Newcastle after in the two previous windows under Joe Kinnear we didn’t make one permanent signing.

But we are making up for those blank transfer windows this summer, and we are hoping we can still get three or four more top players through the door.

And one reason we can continue to get good deals done at Newcastle is because of Mike Ashley’s strategy of paying the full fee up front in cash – and that’s (very) attractive to the selling clubs.

Here’s a table of out incoming transfers so far this season and the transfer amounts are best guesses since Newcastle don’t release the actual fees we paid for the players.

Ayoze Perez£1.4MTenerife
Jack ColbackFreeSunderland
Siem de Jong£6MAjax
Remy Cabella£8MMontpellier
Emmanuel Riviere£6MMonaco
Daryl Janmaat£5MFeyenoord
Facundo Ferreyra£1.6M - Season LoanShakhtar Donetsk
Jamaal Lascelles£4MNottingham Forest
Karl Darlow£3MNottingham Forest

Of course we have received about £32M from the sale of Yohan Cabaye in January and Mathieu Debuchy last week to Arsenal – so we still have some significant money to spend in this transfer window.

We’ll try not to get too carried away (but that’s difficult), and we just hope that Lee Charnley, Alan Pardew and Graham Carr – obviously with the help of owner Mike Ashley – will press on and get the three or four players we still need – and who knows we may even get a result against Manchester City at home in our first game of the season.

That would be something.

whilst all this debate continues on who is to blame for HBA, the sense that everyone including himself should know that he is unlikely to be with us next season there, it puts a big question mark on why pardew should be recieving the blame.

evidence shows that not even pardew should be able to prevent a player performing well when that player knows he is unlikely to remain with newcastle the following season.
ba was changed from a goal scoring machine to a striker with no goals when he got moved out wide for the second half of that season we finished 5th just so pardew himself could put cisse there. That somehow didn’t stop him from getting that move away because now that others knew he had that clause he forced pardew into making him CF again as pardew would not want to have a carroll saga for the second winter running. So now that ba got himself back as the main striker he was bursting with goals week in week out and then in january he got himself that move he wanted.

the second player was cabaye, that player was a player who had a fairly disappointing season during the europa league season, the problem now was he wasn’t getting such an easy way of moving because the money ashley wanted was too high a price for others knowing he had a bad season, so as the strike failed cabaye was now left with just one option, he had to prove to others he would get lots of assists and score the goal, that is just what he did and now he was sold to PSG.

the 3rd and final player i speak of is remy who like ba and cabaye was unable to move to the decent club the summer he wanted to because unfortunately for him there wages were to high a risk for a player who has not been here long, so now he took the next best option and that was a move to us, if he were to read what people keep saying about HBA then the last thing he should be doing is coming to us on loan but no he still opted to come to newcastle and expected to be showing other teams he can score enough goals to be worthy of a move up to that team, like ba and cabaye he too proved that even pardew can’t stop a player who really wants to move to perform well enough for that move.

marvo himself this year knows he is unlikely to remain so he went and got himself fit, so he now has had links to other clubs.

which get to point where i ask why can’t HBA do the very same thing himself.

pardew might pick who starts and who is sub but what he doesn’t do is A) make the players meals, B)control the legs or make the passes and finally C) control the players attitude. these are up to the player himself and right now even rodgers would not accept a player acting in the manner like HBA is acting, just ask suaez.

Yes Blubber, we all know what it means, its just a bit of a strange term to use. get a sense of humour!

  • 6 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:40 PM

I would imagine the fee we paid for Cabella is substantially more than 8 million pounds snd there woukd also have been considerable agent fees and signing on fees too. I would imagine the amount spent is probably closer to 35 million pounds in total.

We did get 20 million for Cabaye rising to 24 i believe and 10 million for debuchy rising to 12. We also got minor income fir tavernier and amalifitano probably around 1 million combined.

  • 7 croftus5678 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:42 PM

every one of those better than the players out ! even shola who i think perez is far more than capable of replacing him esp goals wise.

only slight negative is remy who wasnt ours in the first place has been replaced by either cabella or river (pick whichever you like).

all in all a huge team improvement and i’m looking forward to next season tbh.

a benteke and a dier would complete everything imo but i’m not going to be a spoilt brat because they have done a great job in transfers this window.

  • 8 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:43 PM

Even if we did pay 15 mil for Carroll, which is about 5 mil too much IMO, considering we sold him for 35 is not bad business really!

Personally would like to see him back but still think we need a fast quick striker in the Bellamy / Kevin Gallagher type mould…

  • 9 croftus5678 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:44 PM

    @6 expatmag

in ed’s defence theres a hell of a lot of sources inc an official interview with pards where he mentioned we got cabella for 7mil.

To think Luke Shaw is more expensive then the accumulation of what we paid for six players.

  • 14 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:47 PM

Yes i know. But Nicollin recently said they got close to the 16 million euros they wanted for him.

  • 16 scout // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:48 PM

Tbf 30 million is cheap he will be left back for the next 10 years there

  • 17 roblee7 // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:49 PM

scout…if he was cheap enough I’d take him, on the basis Graeme Carr scouted him and Norwich were pretty pish all round last season

  • 18 ethiotoon // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:49 PM

The mgr won’t make any decision to sign further player until his team plays further 4 or 5 preseason games.he has to analize his strength and weaknesses.I am sure he will do that.
IMO we r very lucky to get those six nice players.anyone on here who isn’t happy with this window will never be happy keep ur voice down & enjoy….

  • 19 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:52 PM

We are desperately short of goals, we don’t need pre season friendlies to tell us that.

  • 20 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:52 PM

Pardew couldnt analyse a fart in a collander mate.

  • 21 Sliema // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:53 PM

Yeh, Leroy Fer is a shout. He’s a decent player, he’s surely not going to stick around in the fizzy pop league is he?!

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:54 PM

Do we really need any more midfielders, we need a proven goal scorer.

  • 23 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:55 PM

I don’t see this as a “huge team improvement” (Croftus) or why Ed is cock a hoop.

We’ve simply done a decent job in replacing the want-aways and Pardew’s write-offs. However, we haven’t replaced the main man yet. That is worrying!

Yes I’m looking forward to seeing the new lads but fear it could be a long old season if we don’t get a top quality centre forward. Either way I’m pleased I renewed my season ticket.

I did say that Mikey would get some decent players when so many were saying he would trouser the money. As it would be madness not to sign a top striker, I am predicting we will. However, Mikey won’t be held to ransom and that is what other clubs and players will set out to do.

  • 24 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:55 PM

We are good in the homegrown apartment for now and a lot of promising youngsters coming up to take their spots.

But it wouldn’t hurt to upgrade some of our HG:s with upcoming players Ings, Dier, Lascelles, Maguire, Hughes, Cousins, Obita etc.

And maybe Zaha if his price goes down.

  • 25 Kc-Toon // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:55 PM

I dont know if anyone has stumbled across these yet, But heres some clips of riviere grabbing a hatrick in his last game for monaco last month

  • 26 expatmag // Jul 20, 2014 at 2:56 PM

As much as I think it might be a gamble, it us not a bad shout on RVW considering the quality of Norwich last season, hus injuries there and the fact he might team up well with SDJ.

But i wouldnt pay more than 3 million for him

Your first paragraph is a cracker. Your second isn’t far short of one.

    What is your footballing background?

  • 29 toonking // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:00 PM

andy carroll might be a very injury prone player but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t be bought. We were just as fussy about Ba and his injury, then we all got shocked to see that he didn’t get an injury at all, ba was now our goal scoriing machine until he was sold. Ashley being the tight man he is will certainly not be too happy to give money to a player who could be injured all season, so really if carroll were to arrive the chances are he would be given a pay as you play contract.

The negativity about carroll and his injury seems to be causing a big issue but there is also a big positive about having him. we all know that set pieces are currently rubbish, this is the perfect reason to bring him back. last season the ball would come into the box and be aimed at willo “our only tall player on the pitch” and the set piece wasted. this season it would be a CF in the name of carroll that we would be aiming the ball to, so all the misses by our CB would now stand much more chance of being scored by the CF also on top of that we would have a great set piece taker in raylor back in the team as sub.

    Wolfswinkel,u must be joking.
even Carr,s judgement is,nt always right.
Im so glad,in this case, we were too tight to buy him.
Which brings us back to who we will bring in, if any, as a striker(s).
How many readers really think Ashley will release 15-20M for a striker?
IMO i think Cabella will be our most expensive signing this window,so i think talk of Carroll ,Ings,Benteke etc are pie in the sky bull.
If we sell Krul and Sissoko,,and lets face it,there is still plenty of time for that to happen, then maybe we would realistically have the money to do that, but we,ve spent the Cabaye and Debuchy money so we are skint.
I cant remember the last time Fatman has actually spent a penny of his own money, let alone the Sky money,so unless we sell ,i think that your lot. Sorry lads.

  • 41 davo85 // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:16 PM

Absolute waste of a transfer window if we don’t get a quality striker, if SDJ goes down and Cabella finds the going tough with close marking we know Pardull has nothing left to bore us with.. This could be a long season and the fat man will probably come out with a negative spend on net transfers again. Do be surprised at the excuses that will start to come re incoming transfers that they didn’t feel the player was the right quality for NUFC and they wouldn’t enhance our playing squad rah rah rah.. Don’t get too excited as we have seen this before, expenditure is made at the bare minimum to achieve our ultimate goal! Survival, mid table mediocrity! Nothing more!

  • 42 bobby mango // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:18 PM

Think we’ve done very good business so far. In fact I don’t want us to sign many more, seen it with other teams when too many new players come in and it’s hard for them to all gel.
That said a top striker is needed. Commanding, first choice CB would be very handy.

On 3 English players being too expensive; Townsend is not just too expensive, but he is also awful. Please, tell me what he contributes to a premier league side. I tis’ goals, it isn’t assists.I wouldn’t even say it is entertainment. Possibly one of the finest examples of overrated English players.

On HBA, too late, it is almost irrelevant now.

On Wolfswinkel vs Carroll. It is like a choice between a dog turd and a cow pat. Neither are good enough. Check my posts last summer if you think I am being fickle!

  • 47 Whos_SuperMac // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:26 PM

I’d buy Carroll if the price was right. When fit he’s a handful. Would make a good strike partner for Adam Armstrong, I’ve not seen the kid play, but many rate the boy.

To think we bought 6 players, more than half a team for less than 1 Suarez, bale, Carroll. It really makes you wonder how some clubs ‘analize’ a player… Sorry poor joke, but really couldn’t help myself…

  • 51 cyprus // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:35 PM

Does the AC purchase come with a no break guarantee? If yes, he’d be a marque signing just like Benteke.

What then? Well, then, in a perfect world: AP takes the England job (or something), HBA is restored to demigod status, top 2 finish 🙂

  • 52 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:40 PM

People criticise Mikey but I think it’s good that the club doesn’t get held to ransom. He’s paying Carr a fortune and I hope he can pull one out of the hat.

Reading the Times today, I see Michael Owen boasting his most lucrative contract in football was at NUFC. £25M over four years! The good old days when money was no object!

  • 53 Blackley and Brownlie // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Hahahahahahahahahah. Will he cost any more than Garth Crooks if we can persuade him to get off the sofa and out of retirement.?

  • 54 cyprus // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:44 PM

(A FIT) AC with a mobile forward translates to plenty of goals for himself and the other guy. Even Nolan, who is a clever footballer, but isn’t a CF or particularly mobile, figured that out.

Set plays? Do we know what those are? AC could remind us.

For the first time in a long while, we could have a player whom we can ‘safely adore’ (if he’s any good), because this time he’ll stay and do a Shearer, ie. see out his career here.

Emphasis on first two words of this post.

  • 55 Belfast // Jul 20, 2014 at 3:44 PM

6 signings. Only one with any experience of the league.

Risky business as Spurs found out last year.

That’s probably the main reason why they are so cheap.

If we where to buy those players from Southampton for example they would cost far more.

  • 72 Graeme // Jul 20, 2014 at 4:16 PM

Tads – question marks doesn’t come close. The defence is shit, doesn’t play as a unit at all, but, with P45DUE saying that he coached them personally, maybe that would explain it!!!

Saylor, Colo, Willo should be replaced, one at a time, starting with Taylor in this window, Collo in January, Willo next summer.

I don’t mind Caroll back but not for 15 m £ and not in place of some of our other top targets. I doubt we will sign him though since he’s like 33 year old with no resale value and injury track record.

Funny you didn’t seem to predict any of the other signings, or even mention it before the media rumours started

It’s important we actually have a pairing at the very least instead of like last season when we had 3-4 different pairings through the season

  • 77 greg // Jul 20, 2014 at 4:27 PM

    For CB
Willamson was our best CB last year but it is a doubt for him to repeat his performance this season
Colo is beyond his best form
Staylor and Mbiwa were given chances and are proven didnt work out
We need a CB , with EPL experience , CB is an area that you cant risk with foreign player nor youngester, Caulker at 8m is reasonable for me,

    FB is good enough

For CM, we need two good DM /CM to hold the midfield and provide cover for the 2 FBs to go forward

Sissolo for me is a powerhouse which should play as a AM
Tiote’s partner should be another holding midfield, Colback and Anita is not a first teamer
Fer at 5m or Rodwell at 12m, I will take a risk on Fer

For AM Cabella-Dejong-Sissoko is exciting but we need a backup for them, Ben Arfa Obertan and Marvauex are leaving , I will go for a young talent

For ST , Riviere has a very good goal per min ratio, as good as Lacazette , Gouffran was a more-than-10-goal ST when in Ligue 1, we may need a proven ST but no bargain option out there, may be give them a chance

Caulker , Fer and a young talent AM will be a perfect window for me ….but reported that Caulker and Fer are heading to QPR…

  • 78 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 4:28 PM

    As Sazzer has pointed out
Signings we will make have to have a future resale value, as stated by the board
Carroll has no resale value and his wages are ridiculous for a 25 yr old Shola

Players tend to improve every new season
When u play with good players around u,u get to play with high confidence and better
Display.we have gained new wonderful players now.Steve and mbiwa have a chance now, bcoz new player with better communication is brought back around them (janmaat).so our defence will definitely improve.marveaux and cisse with the help of cabella and siem will give
their nose on the ground for the club.
So the point is even if we don’t sign anyone from now on,the addition of those six new players will create great enthusiasm and spirit for the once underperformed lets give them a chance…..

actually ethio is talking a bit of sense here, when players join a new club the adrenalin kicks in which helps to get some decent performances/results which in turn do give confidence, look at Sissoko when he joined, and once confidence is their you can do very well, and confidence does spread so it could as ethio say’s have a positive affect on all of the squad, obviously another 3/4 players would add further to that confidence but in fairness to ethio he does have a valid point.

  • 89 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:12 PM

No, Shearer came in captained the squad, smashed goal records left right and centre and wrote himself in to local legend with battling performances and leading the team from the front

    The two are incomparable
Coming in on high wages to warm the physio table for a fee of £15 million is hardly doing a Shearer
You also seem to be ignoring the point Sazzer made about him not being even close to the clubs confirmed transfer strategy

If Carroll didn’t come from Newcastle no one would want him anywhere near the team, why would they?
We have a different squad from his first time here and as shown at Liverpool he can’t play in the style we trying to play, which I’d imagine why WHU wouldn’t mind moving him on seeing as there chairman has stated there football must evolve

Everyone else is moving forward, seemingly some of our fans would like to see us go backwards just to satisfy the fairy tale of having a local number 9

  • 90 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:13 PM

The lift when Sissoko signed lasted for about 2 games
No one has said the signings wouldn’t improve the squad, but it’s all for nothing if a goal scorer at least isn’t added

  • 91 Spoof // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:14 PM

cheers m8, when you say 4:30 do I assume that is morning and not afternoon.

  • 92 Spoof // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:17 PM

undoubtedly we need a scorer and a CB, but as ethio quite rightly alluded to, the new competition for places could shake 1 or 2 up and gain better performances from them.

  • 93 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:20 PM

But there’s still no increased competition for CB or CF so how does it improve the competition for those key areas that were highlighted as concerns still?
The midfield will help control the tempo of games and create more chances but we were creating chances last season, but had Remy up top to cover for the misfiring Cisse
We’ve signed Rivière which will be a welcome addition but seeing as we’ve lost 2 frequently used CF’s it’s not a case that we’ve strengthened just started to replace

  • 94 Sazzer // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:25 PM

So it’s a big difference going for Carroll at 15 m £ and Benteke.

Benteke is 2 years younger and he’s got a good record already.

If he doesn’t improve we will have bought 15 m £ striker that we get to keep.

If he improves on his record then we can sell him for 25 m + within 3 years.

And if he get Pardewed and does worse than he did with Villa then we can probably get most of those 15 m back anyway. By some team hoping he will get back to the Villa form.

  • 95 Pardews Prolific Boys // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:27 PM

There are the same five players Newcastle fans are always going on about us signing, Aubemeyang, Lacazette, Ba, Carroll and Maiga. It seems every day the club gets linked with one of these five players. Also why would a club official be promising a signing ‘before the deadline’ in the middle of July?

  • 100 cyprus // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:34 PM

All set for an argument? Sorry for mentioning Shearer in the same same sentence as AC.

My point was: these days, it’s hard to have football heroes because they tend to move on. This lad would stay. Would he make it as a ‘hero’? Well, he was on his way before he left. I am sure you secretly liked him too 😉

Now, I mentioned his possible time out due to injury as a potential pitfall and a big BIG concern.

  • 102 Shadow_Shearer // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:38 PM

Let’s not get carried away. Remember Mashley only buys when he feels the team will get relegated if he doesn’t spend. And last season we lost last 14 out of 20 games. Which means if we didn’t spend we were going down again.
January transfers windows he’ll be sayin I’m not signing anybody because I signed six players in the summer.
He’s not thinkin about the club, he’s tryin 2 profit his own pocket. Only good that will come of this is more depth in the team. Players will slowly be sold on for profits. U all wait and see

  • 104 Spoof // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:41 PM

and that is what I said myself @92, we defo need more players but all I was trying to do was back ethio when he suggested that the new arrivals could give the rest of the squad a boost, there isn’t a right or a wrong here, all I was doing was agreeing with him as I feel it was a valid point.

Apart from injury the big concern with AC would be how easy it would be to go long ball, Pardew gets a lot of stick for playing the long ball which is rubbish actually as he always perfers to keep the ball down and play using the fullbacks to give us width, he always has 2 attacking fullbacks, but due to such a weak squad when we have 3/4 out then he has to adopt a different style which is long ball, that is the only time he uses it, but when he has used it it has never worked, we never get the results with it, now with AC he would have a target man and with SDJ’s strength being late runs into the box similar to Kevin Nolan then he may have the men to make it work, my biggest fear is that rather than use it as a plan be, which I would be happy with, he could if getting the results make it plan a, which is a big concern of mine, I did mention a few days ago that SDJ could easily be adapted to play effectively in the long ball game as getting the second ball would be natural for him, this Carroll lnk only fuels that thought, like I say as a plan b then ok, but !!!!!

But it didn’t detract from the point others were making about being in desperate need for a CF which he was suggesting we didn’t and the squad had been written off

    How is it an argument?
Seeing out your career by returning to your initial club because you’ve failed to make it elsewhere is hardly emulating Shearer is it?
How do you know he would stay? And is it really loyal returning to a club because you’ve failed to make it elsewhere, how is that the makings of a “hero”?

  • 114 Rotonda heights // Jul 20, 2014 at 5:56 PM

total cop out playing long ball if 2/3 injuries or opting not to play certain players. Were results any better playing long ball- an emphatic no.

was paying gosling and shola instead of an available ben Arfa and Marveaux so much more productive – again absolutely not.

If you have to play long ball what the hell are you doing playing for a premiership team if your technical ability to pass the ball accurately for 5 or 10 yards is so poor.?

Hoofball is always the default position for allardyce, pardew and used to be pulis, simply because they really don’t have a plan B like modern managers such as Rodgers, Martinez etc.

Rotonda – Debuchy was allowed to attack for us as well, it was only when he was new to the league and we were battling relegation that Pardew asked him to be more cautious, which was fairly sensible to be honest.

and his abilities in the first place .

  • 123 Spoof // Jul 20, 2014 at 6:02 PM

in fairness I don’t think we can honestly say that neither Debuchy nor Santon were overly held back, on the contrary I would say that they would have been better if they did hold back a tadge, it’s no wonder that we conceded so many when we were so exposed out wide, mind 2 poor CB’s doesn’t help that much either, it has got to be said.

the part of what ethio said which I agreed with was that new signings do give the rest of the squad a boost, as for more signings yes we certainly do but that doesn’t change the fact that the new signings would give a boost, which is what I agreed with, so for me that was a very valid point.

  • 124 Shaker Shakrah // Jul 20, 2014 at 6:03 PM

Haidara is by far better than Dummett

  • 125 IITianToon // Jul 20, 2014 at 6:05 PM

@Shaker I agree that Haidara is better than Dummett. But I believe he will go for the defensive minded Dummett against Man City. He may resort to Haidara against weaker opposition.

Last season Dummett showed some good abilities
against the weaker oppositions but as soon as we

    pick him .

I didn’t mention anyone disagreeing with the boost aspect of his post, all I was saying is that it was a valid point, and why would Ashley shell out for a plan b, well I never said that AC would be a reserve and only used due to injuries but that he could be used to improve the plan b if he was here, but in all honesty if you read between the lines I think that you would see that I would not be over joyed to get him back, what I was doing was trying to guess why they would want him back, personally for that money I would rather put a bid in for Lukaku.

it may well be a cop out as you say but that is how I see it, and if AC does come then I would expect to see more of it, not that I want to but may have to.

They have signed 3 new strikers, and their fullbacks are fit again so Grosskreutz will be back in midfield.

So Hofmann, Blaszczykowski, Grosskreutz, Reus will be their wide men as long as Reus stays. Mkhitaryan, Gundogan in the middle.

I for one want HBA and Cisse to stay. Who cares if he doesn’t track back. We’re not a world class top 4 team, we’re a team that has (before recent times) always valued attack anyway.

i’ve got to admit myself, as andy carroll is from newcastle himself it does get us more keen on wanting him back and if he were a non geordie most of us including me would be nowhere near as keen on him.

Still the one thing i do want one of our strikers to be is a tall and strong striker even if it isn’t carroll, I’m not a believer in tall strikers causing hoofball, the thing i would say causes teams to hoof it up pitch is down to a lack of movement especially by the midfielders. The thing a tall striker does to a team is allows us to score set pieces because they can handle the pushing and shoving. IMO

toonarmydoonsouth at 150 .the bbc are quoting the chronicle as the source of the article when the chronic article says no such thing . i would be very surprised if ncle would pay 20 mill euros for a player who has only scored 24 league goals at age 23 .before gouffy came to us when playing as a striker in a more defensive team he scored 22 goals from start of 2011 /12 season to 12 /13 winter window.

  • 176 Belfast // Jul 20, 2014 at 7:27 PM

Find that very hard to believe.
So he’s agreed terms with us, but he’s going to sign a new contract with Lyon ?

Probably wants to sign a new contract because we’re the only club that’s interested lol
No champions league clubs in for me, so I’ll just sign a new contract and stay here.

    Now that makes more sense.

  • 177 Jail for Ashley // Jul 20, 2014 at 7:28 PM

Firstly we let three strikers go and have bought one who has no PL experience, secondly we have one of the worst defensive records in the division with the new addition replacing a guy who took six months to settle in, you tell me what might go wrong.

  • 178 piers18 // Jul 20, 2014 at 7:32 PM

For me the transfer window is a failure if we do not sign another big player.

I think we are going to struggle to find an experienced striker i.e. one with a proven goal scoring record.

That means we are have to go for potential. A good option could be Khouma Babacar – tall, strong, got good technique and most importantly in the last year of his contract (cheap)

  • 186 toonarmydownsouth // Jul 20, 2014 at 7:39 PM

Wow OL only want €8-10 mil for Grenier, not a priority but would show some intent if we bought in quality in addition rather than just replacements

  • 187 Markaccus // Jul 20, 2014 at 7:42 PM

    Mr funk

I think that we should be looking at a striker who has a decent record in two different leagues, even if they are weaker leagues. It shows adaptability, which means a slightly smaller gamble in bringing him to the prem. I agree we are not going to get a big scorer from the somewhere like spain or germany.

  • 213 jimiley // Jul 20, 2014 at 8:13 PM

It works if you have a top manager and a cohesive integrated system throughout the club, ie like at Dortmund.

I still think Bayern have the best team in the world and with the addition of Lewandowski have just gone up to another level IMO .

Yes it will work against most teams in their own league, but when they play the real big fish in the Champions League they need to mix it up .

If (and a big IF) we do go for and sign Grenier then we will be lining up with a 4-6-0.

Pardew often thinks he is a forward thinking coach who can be put up against the best and I think he is going through a ‘I can do a Joachim Loew’ faze.

If Grenier comes then I expect a starting 11 that looks like this:

    ——————-De Jong—————-

We won’t play with much width other than the fullbacks and De Jong will become our Muller.

In better hands, it might actually work. However I wouldn’t choose these payers I’d put HBA in there myself and Anita.

@Jail for Ashley: it was all Europes fault, mate.

  • 253 ITK Beattie25 // Jul 20, 2014 at 9:29 PM

Who broke the record of coming from 4-0 behind to get a result… Well due to poor tactics from the manager we were 4-0 down. 2 penalties, a sending off and a moment of class brought us back.
Who took us to 5th place finish… I have argued on this forum for years that it was down to luck, moments of individual brilliance and the big teams performing poorly as much as it was down to the manager and the coaching staff.
Who took us to Europe after long time…Who nearly relegated us? That voids this argument.
Who won LMA award 1st time as Newcastle manager… Alan Pardew. Following in the footsteps of greats such as Joe Kinnear, Danny Wilson, George Burley, Dave Jones and back to back winner Steve Coppell. Pardew has reduced NUFC to a small thinking club so a 5th place finish is equal to Greece winning Euro 2004 in the eyes of many now.
Who won BPL mgr of the month as Newcastle mgr after long time…I won’t argue this one. Although Hayden Mullins is always a good thing to put for any pro Pardew disagreement.
    Who brought cabaye,sissoko and debuchy
and make us respected club in France,Holland and England… We were already a respected club in those countries thanks to Keegan, Bobby and the players they signed. The scouting netwok, MD and owner brought the current and former players in.
Who equalled record of winning Six Straight BPL games…I think the injuries forcing him to play 4-3-3 which many had cried out for perhaps had a lot to do with this.
Who brought janmaat, cabella, siem…Alan PArdew. He personally flew to them, offered them the contract and flew them all home in his private jet.

The more I think of it, the more I realise how sad it is that the good deeds that Pardew gave us are either superficial or had nowt to do with him.

Then there’s the cup runs, the FA Cup that he calls “his” competition. Sunderland giving us back to back hidings, for the first time in over 70 years, with a weaker squad. Nutting a player, pushing a referee, swearing at an opposition manager (though I do agree that Pellegrini is indeed a f’ing old kernt), continuous lies, and a win rate of 37.65% of his time here. Hoofball, helping the fat man at the top deny the ambition for the club, openly supporting Wonga and the renaming of the stadium.

All very good signings, probably attracted more by the prospect of the EPL than us, and none would be of any great interest to the current senior clubs. Still a step in the right direction which is heartening, but no real evidence that Newcastle will do what it takes to push on and genuinely threaten the top six. They are all bargains or up and comers. We are an Auderweld, Grenier and marquee striker away from being back among the elite, and that really isn’t likely to happen, at least in the short term and marquee signings may sadly be entirely a thing of the past.

What is the point of finishing fifth if we defend for our lives for most of the game? That’s pretty much what it was for the vast majority of the games. Finishing with a goal difference of plus 5 and with a number of clean sheets tells its own story on how Pinocchio approaches games. All those off the lines by Simpson just shows how fortunate we were, plus the fact the ball was continuously in that danger area.

No surprise that when the enthusiasm is sapped from the players playing this way, there is no clue of how to attack and move, because we don’t show anything other than brief glimpses of it. Which through probability is bound to occur anyway.

Defending for your life football, which isn’t even done well, is not the type of football I want to see us play. Nevermind with the technical players Carr has brought in.

    Nothing has changed. P45DUE out.

@Thump – well said, listing things like that makes you think just how many problems there are with Pardew.

The suppression of ambition is the worst for me- for a sporting club that is heinous.
