Newcastle Move In For Central Defender?

News today in the Mail that Newcastle are stepping up their interest in 20 year-old Sporting Lisbon’s defender Eric Dier, who was born in England and has already represented the England U21 side 5 times, and has also represented England at U18, U19 and U20 levels.

Eric Dier – Newcastle step up interest

There was some news last week on Dier, who is said to be available for around £5M, and it was reported in some outlets, to be too high a fee for Newcastle.

But Dier has already played 30 times for Sporting Lisbon, and has been impressive when playing for the England U21 side.

Newcastle need to improve their defense, which has leaked far too many goals – 127 goals in the last too seasons in the Premier League – and Eric looks like a top young English defender.

It depends on whether Newcastle are ready to swoop for the 6’2″ England lad, and we have to think that the hard-up Lisbon club would be only too happy with an offer of less than £5M – paid up front in cash by Newcastle.

Newcastle have already brought in six good players in this transfer window,  but we (are greedy and) still need two strikers and a central midfield play-maker – in addition to a center-back brought in before September rolls around.

What do you think?

Is it because Sports Direct are expanding to New Zealand and Australia ?

Want to make a bet now that it will be Oldham followed by Australia next year ?

Yes i think you’re right Slank.
Would love to see us get this fella!
He’s big and would hopefully satisfy Pardew crave for more English players. Don’t know much about him but he seems to be highly rated and if Carr thinks he worth near 5m then he must have great potential. Now, who should be moved on this summer between Saylor and Williamson? I think we should keep MYM since he is young and Colo is the captain so no way he would be leaving this window

    Repost from previous thread

Don’t really understand the MYM love on this blog from some people? He does have some positive attributes as he’s obviously athletic & can bring the ball out of defence but for me his decision making & aerial ability let him down massively.

It’s fair enough criticising Pardew for playing him out of position (one of my pet hates) but I think people are letting their hatred of Pardew blind them when it comes to assessing MYM’s ability. Winning a poor French league is different beer to playing in the PL, he’s 25 years old & has hardly been an international regular either. Suppose that’s Pardew’s fault as well.

    @3 Mattroge
its true that alot of the bloggers on here like MYM, but its hard for us not too since he’s our only first team CB that has any potential and isn’t nearing the end of their career

Why is Aarons in the starting lineup? I thought Pardew does not play the young guys.

btw, stepping up interest does not mean putting in a bid. I think Eric’s been in demand so we gotta be quick.

@Duffus 9 clean sheets against Chelsea & Spurs? The Chelsea game ok fair enough but Tim Krul made 14 saves in that Spurs game.

Willo, collo and staylor are all on the decline, so i think, even if dier is signed and he becomes first choice, there will still be a good chance that two of those players you mentioned will come through into the side.

not too good so far…we’re liable on the wings and midfield getting bypassed.

That Rolando kid is looking lively though.

Can’t agree with you mate. If he gets a run of 5 games, he’ll be full of confidence and show that he’s a lot better than the other 3.

They’re at end of their careers. Taylor is cack, and Willo has done great recently, but he’s not exactly quality. Colo was great, he ‘was’.

Now they’re all old and slow, MYM can actually turn and run. With a smart CB partner he’d be fantastic.

Seeing as Willo and Colo are aging and Taylor is sh1te I don’t see how bringing in a young CB who actually has experience can be a bad thing?
Plus Streete and Good have pretty poor injury records
Dier would be a great signing
