News today in the Mail that Newcastle are stepping up their interest in 20 year-old Sporting Lisbon’s defender Eric Dier, who was born in England and has already represented the England U21 side 5 times, and has also represented England at U18, U19 and U20 levels.
Eric Dier – Newcastle step up interest
There was some news last week on Dier, who is said to be available for around £5M, and it was reported in some outlets, to be too high a fee for Newcastle.
But Dier has already played 30 times for Sporting Lisbon, and has been impressive when playing for the England U21 side.
Newcastle need to improve their defense, which has leaked far too many goals – 127 goals in the last too seasons in the Premier League – and Eric looks like a top young English defender.
It depends on whether Newcastle are ready to swoop for the 6’2″ England lad, and we have to think that the hard-up Lisbon club would be only too happy with an offer of less than £5M – paid up front in cash by Newcastle.
Newcastle have already brought in six good players in this transfer window, but we (are greedy and) still need two strikers and a central midfield play-maker – in addition to a center-back brought in before September rolls around.
What do you think?

Comment #162never usually get caught up in academy hype, it seems we’ve supposedly had 6 or 7 of the new “wayne rooneys” over the last few years, but i genuinely do think armstrong could be something special. Im thinking he’ll be kept around the 1st team this season instead of loaning him out.

Comment #165Actually thought that was canny defending. We got back and controlled their break, eventually forcing a long range effort.

Comment #171First time i’ve enjoyed a newcastle match in what seems like forever, even if it was against poor opposition. Im looking forward to seeing how we do against better opposition like schalke.

Comment #172Decent showing from all the lads in this match.
Some decent prospects in there in the second half.
Good result.
Exciting to think we still have the likes of Krul, Cabella, Janmaat and Tiote still to add to the mix.

Comment #180Deffo some positives to take from that. We played atracking football for one. Players seemed to last the distance, seemed to be comunicating well and seemed organised. If we can build on that for the harder teams we might be a decent side this season. IF.

from that i learnt hairdryer is def better than dummet and tbh santon also and he should be our lb imo.
vukic is never going to be in our first team ! dont get me wrong i’m not calling the lad but siem shows what a player like him should be like and unfortunatly its 2 leagues above vukic so imo we should let him go.
perez looks like he will be a very good player but not for the first team just yet in another year he will be ready.
rolando…well the lad reminds me of sterling and will only get better with more games so we should use him whenever possible.
sammi will have a part to play but theres something about him i just dont like tbh.
arma/campbell did well esp campbell who had a lot more experiance and prescence just wish they where 6 inch taller however i do think the next stage for them is games that they sadly wont get at us so they should both go out on loan.
mbiwa/colo both very very involved and i’d love to see them as our cb pairing permanently.

Comment #183I guess we shouldn’t conclude anything from this… Standout players? Well none. Don’t be deceived by the score. Sorry to disappoint. Still, just a friendly and against no real opposition.

Comment #185Jamiemac – you are maybe not aware of this, but Mbiwa is not a Right Back. I would have thought the point was fairly obvious.
Maybe you missed last season when Mbiwa was played ‘out of position’ at Right Back, when it also helped to ruin his confidence.
How exactly is Mbiwa going to be able to prove himself as a first choice centre-back, when it looks like he is going to be battling a natural, international right back for the right back spot.

Comment #187That tribute sent shivers down my spine. Hugely emotional.
I hope AP has the courage to continue having us play in this new style. Ok we may get whooped a few times, but much rather this way than just hoofing it, as we do look to have some very good technical players now.
Good to see Armstrong and Campbell combine to meaningful affect and Aarons was exciting too. I really hope all of them can come through along with Perez, Haidara, Satka etc.
Team spirit looked very good and I can’t really see a way back for any of Benny, Marv and Obertan now, although I really hope MYM gets given a second chance as he looked to be part of the feelgood factor.

tbh m8 i thought mbiwa played great at rb he seems to enjoy getting forward ect and i wouldnt cry at him being played there as stand in next season.
he does tend to make a few mistakes though so maybe he needs to iron them out before he has a proper go at cb to stake his claim ?

agree with all.
let arfa/marv/guti/ober and even vukic go imo cheap if needs be as we seem to have better players in youth/reserves now that need the development.

He was shocking whenever he played cb. Makes far too many mistakes. I’d be happy for him to be back up rb. Rather he was back up rb than back up cb.

Comment #193I’d prefer we used taylor as right back.
I don’t expact anything from him anyway, so i’d prefer it if we kept Mbiwa as a centre half.
Couldn’t give a monkeys is Taylor’s confidence gets knocked by playing out of position.
Anyone know when, or indeed if Ryan Taylor will be back.
I know he’s training now but i dont’ think hes done any contact work or game situations?

Comment #194Jamiemac, Mbiwa had some good games playing at CB. He played quite well with Williamson for a while.
Switching him to Right Back, where he has never been comfortable, is as good as throwing in the towel on his career.
This is a player than captained Montpellier to a ligue 1 title and nearly made the France Euro 2012 squad. He did that playing CB.
