Grenier Misses Training – Are Newcastle Close To A Deal?

Newcastle transfer target Clement Grenier was missing from the Lyon training ground today, and there is speculation that his transfer may be under way – and hopefully underway to Newcastle United.

Clement Grenier – missing form Lyon training

We suppose it could be nothing that he is missing from training, but with the news that Newcastle had reportedly started negotiations for his transfer over the last couple of days, his absence  may suggest that some progress is being made in the negotiations.

The news late last week was that Lyon President Jean-Michel Aulas would let the play-maker leave this summer – but only if the transfer fee was a good one.

The report in le10sport.com says he is valued at  only £7.5M – but we cannot see a deal being done at that low fee, given that we reported this morning that 23 year-old Antoine Griezmann seemed to be getting close to a move from Real Sociedad to Atletico Madrid for £24M.

And remember that Grenier was preferred to Griezmann in the initial French World Cup squad of 23.

Arsenal have also been linked with Grenier over the summer, but most reports over the last  few days in France are that it’s Newcastle United who are trying to get a deal done.

Maybe with this news there is some hope that we can sign him – but surely we would have to pay a lot more than £7.5M for the playmaker.

One difficulty that Newcastle have faced is that Clement has said he only wants to join a club in the Champions League, but recently Alan Pardew has stated that Newcastle’s  aim is to get into the Champions League – even though that will not be easy.

What do you think?

We wish, but I don’t think Pardew has the guts or the wisdom to play 3 number 10s on the field (Siem, Cabella and Grenier).

How do we keep bringing in players so cheap? If I was headily employed by another club is just wait and see who we offer for, then match our bids!

We’re the only club being so prudent, yet still brining in high calibre players.

Imagine if Grenier is like the Cisse deal where the lad had already signed before anyone knew he was even here .

    Doubt it…..

    You never know though.

re the Remy thing, I believe the £14 mill for Borini must have been earmarked for Remy. I am sure Liverpool are not that flush…. I know they have scored on Suarez money but over the years they have spent some vast sums of money. Maybe they are feeling the pinch.

Floppy chops is positive it is not a medical issue. So lack of funds is a possibility.

Newcastle United have made approaches for Lyon attacking pair Alexandre Lacazette and Clement Grenier, according to reports in French newspaper L’Equipe.
Foot 1 additionally reports neither are in Lyons Europacup party and that Grenier was spotted at Lyon airport waiting to board a flight for England

7.5 Mil for Grenier? That would go a long way to bringing a striker in instead…

Why are so many people putting Cabella on the LW? Complain about Pardew’s player choices and yet everyone wants Cabella played out of position…

I like Grenier but would prefer Wijnaldum as he adds more pace and can play anywhere across the midfield or off a striker.

Would love to see Grenier here but cant see another MF as a club priority.

If neither Lacazette or perhaps Remy come off I can see the club adopting a wait and see for the January window, or perhaps another loan.
