There was news over the weekend that Newcastle had moved in to try to sign play-maker Clement Grenier of Lyon, a top young player who has been made available by his French club.
Clement Grenier – can leave Lyon
But there was also news that Arsenal could still fancy Grenier, and could go after the 5 times capped French International, who made the French World Cup squad in the summer, but then had to withdraw with a groin injury.
The 23-year-old is a classy player who is a good passer of the ball and is great from set plays like free kicks, and he would be an excellent replacement for Yohan Cabaye, and he is a better player at 23 years old than Yohan was at the same age.
Lyon are short of cash, and have therefore decided to let Grenier leave the club, and he will likely attract the attentions of some top clubs in Europe.
Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas wants a (very) good fee for his player before he will let him move, and reports suggests he wants £15M.
But with the news over the weekend that 23 year-old Antoine Griezmann’s club Real Sociedad have reached a deal with Atletico Madrid for £24M for Antoine’s transfer – Grenier’s transfer fee could go even higher.
So if Arsenal are still interested in the player, and Griezmann is sold for £24M – it could be extremely difficult for Newcastle to get this playmaker to Tyneside.
He would be too expensive for us.
