Newcastle’s Attempt At Signing Playmaker Could Be In Jeopardy

There was news over the weekend that Newcastle had moved in to try to sign play-maker Clement Grenier of Lyon, a top young player who has been made available by his French club.

clement grenier 987

Clement Grenier – can leave Lyon

But there was also news that Arsenal could still fancy Grenier, and could go after the 5 times capped French International, who made the French World Cup squad in the summer, but then had to withdraw with a groin injury.

The 23-year-old is a classy player who is a good passer of the ball and is great from set plays like free kicks, and he would be an excellent replacement for Yohan Cabaye, and he is a better player at 23 years old than Yohan was at the same age.

Lyon are short of cash, and have therefore decided to let Grenier leave the club, and he will likely attract the attentions of some top clubs in Europe.

Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas wants a (very) good fee for his player before he will let him move, and reports suggests he wants £15M.

But with the news over the weekend that 23 year-old Antoine Griezmann’s club Real Sociedad have reached a deal with Atletico Madrid for £24M for Antoine’s transfer – Grenier’s transfer fee could go even higher.

So if Arsenal are still interested in the player, and Griezmann is sold for £24M – it could be extremely difficult for Newcastle to get this playmaker to Tyneside.

He would be too expensive for us.

What do you think?

Sorry, but what’s the connection between Griezman’s fee and Grenier’s?

Which is why we should have gone in with a respectable offer in the first place. Not the usual slap in the face insult, that we always do.
If we had offered £10 -12M to start with, he would be here already. IMHO

I think what Ed is trying to say, is that the transfer fees are ramping up, beyond what NUFC will pay, as the close season is drawing to an end.
We are being priced out of the market, because we are so poor.

One slight difference there though ed, griezmann actually played at the world cup and played well so I don’t see why Grenier’s price would of gone up because of this as he never featured albeit due to injury yes but that’s all ifs and buts!

We need a striker first and foremost anyway, then a CB or grenier imo….get the striker sorted first as this is critical

    Lew Davies…

As you say, we should have gone in with a realistic bid and that’s what we ought to be doing in future!

Ok, submit a lowish first bid to be seen as an expression of interest but sitting on that without entering sensible negotiations is not the way forward!

On harper. Had we put him up for sale, i am sure he would have been in demand. Also i did state that he would have been at least a back up for England, not necesarily no.1. I also said that SOME would argue that, not everyone. The point is, Harper did not fullfil his potential at NUFC, so we have no idea how far he could have gone, and what he might have acheived. In reflection of all this, i think it was right for forster to move on.

Lesh – our board think they have a tried and tested formula that never fails.
Just because it has worked once or twice previously.
Unfortunately I don’t think this one size fits all approach should be stuck to so rigidly.
Sometimes you have to pay a little more to get the man you want.
    We never seem to learn.
Or maybe the club is not being as ambitious as it is making out to be after all.
    Hmmmmm!

Recent history has suggested that the club is quite persistent when it has done its due diligence on a player and all parties in the club agree that this is a player they want.

Again recent history shows that they are not put off by the antics of some clubs especially their chairmen.

Arsenal have a galaxy of midfield players and so he may not be top dog there whereas with us he could be.

Just checking in from the sunny shores of Zante, found somewhere with wi fi that works so thought I’d take the opportunity to catch up with some toon news!
Sounds like a another solid performance against Phoenix so great stuff there
Remy failed his medical? Right up our street get in sharpish the lad was dynamite for us in a sh1te team last season

On the last article, he gets a lot of bad press does Pardew, rightly so, so only fair to say pure class to the Alan’s it clearly means a lot to the families in a time of immense sorrow so hats off to them and tbf the north east as a whole, fantastic show of support and unity

Right back to the sea! Hold my beer ……..;)

We don’t need another CM, Tiote and Colback will do all the dirty work which will give Cabella,De Jong and Sissoko freedom to play.

De Jong has the brain to see a pass no other does. Why try and sign another mid? spend all the money on a striker and defender midfield is our strongest area.

PEA scored twice in the first 10 minutes in Dortmunds 5-1 friendly win last night.

I doubt he would have been offered to us and moreover he seems a certain starter for them.

PEA was never on the radar. Despite the rumours, he was never up for sale. He had a storming first season and they love him there. He’s an important past of their squad, especially after selling Lewa.

Morning Markaccus – I agree I think the PEA story is rubbish but I alway imagine your reaction when I see a statement like that from Colin.
I also think it’s slightly harsh to criticise NUFC for selling Forster for £2m – it’s easy with 20 20 hindsight to criticise & say he was worth more but at the time he was a relatively unknown keeper and £2m was OK.

Colin talks somes rubbish! In what world does a player who’s had a great season and is only 23 lose 4m off his value? Dortmund are no mugs, his price is more likely to be 18m than 8m

I don’t see you signing anymore players before after the last friendly on Aug. 10th. That would give coach dumpass time to see who will make the cut and who will be leaving (one way or the other)

…should also give him time enough to move the dead weight on and free up space and money.

It just remains to be seen if we will get that goalscorer and CB?
