There’s certainly something happening with Clement Grenier at Lyon, because after missing training yesterday and on Friday, Clement has now been left out of the Lyon squad for their Europa League 3rd round qualifying first leg game against Czech Republic side Mlada Boleslav, scheduled for Thursday night.
Clement Grenier – out of Lyon squad for Europa League qualifier
Arsenal, AC Milan, Newcastle, Everton and Southampton are reported to be interested in signing the player, who has been told he can now leave Lyon this summer, as long as his French club gets a decent fee for him.
If a player is in serious negotiations to be transferred, his club usually leaves him out of upcoming games, as happened with Yohan Cabaye in January, when he was surprisingly withdrawn from the Newcastle squad that played on 28th January t Norwich, and that was after Yohan had scored two great goals in the 3-1 win at West Ham 10 days previously.
This is what Lyon boss Hubert Fournier has said today – that Lyon have yet to receive a suitable offer for Grenier from any club:
“We cannot talk about compensating for his potential departure. Due to his talent, we will not find somebody on the market to replace him because of our financial means.¨
“We will adapt appropriately if he leaves. For the moment, we have not had any satisfying offers.¨ “There have been propositions because he is a quality player who is wanted a lot around the world.¨
¨But they were not perceived to be adequate by the club.” “Also, they were not what Clement wanted in terms of footballing level.”
Reports in France say he has not trained since last Friday so we can only assume one or more clubs are in serious negotiations for his transfer, and since Newcastle were interested in the player last January as a replacement for Yohan Cabaye, we hope the Magpies are int here trying to do a deal.
But it could be we have put in an offer but Clement doesn’t want to come to Tyneside, because he has been consistent this summer in saying he only wants to join a club who are in the Champions League.
And of the clubs said to be interested in him, only Arsenal can offer him Champions League football next season, and their interest may have cooled.
AC Milan had a bad time of last year in the Italian League and finished down in 8th place.
Stay tuned ….

Comment #1Considering our HG issues and the news Southampton will be selling Schneiderlin and Rodriguez this window, I am surprised none of you lads are discussing the opportunity to sign Jay instead of getting carried away with ridiculous prospects like Benteke, Lukaku and Aubameyang.

Comment #2I know MYM is a CB but I can personally understand why Pardew has tried to convert him to right back. Skillful ball player and not physical enough for CB. he’s not tall enough to partner Colo ( as Our Toon said)….I still have nightmares about Everton away last season and understandably I think, Pardew is s**t scared to ever try it again, we got absolutely pounded that first half and never seen our defence as vulnerable as it was in that 45 minutes of football, truly horrendous. Anyway, if we didn’t have Colo, I’d put him centre back with a big guy, but I think Pards know he’s a good fotballer and therefore right back makes sense, I think this is Pardews attempt at trying to keep him and play him. Problem is, he doesn’t look very good at right back either

Comment #3Why do we need Grenier, in an ideal world it would be great to have players like him keeping other good players out of the team and vic versa, but we know there is only limited funds if any, we still need a striker, forget this CB nonsense it’s not happening. A flurry of signings albeit very good ones have people thinking that the regime is turning a corner, nothing over the last seven years suggests this, the minimum has been done in the transfer market which should see us comfortably in and around tenth, if the TV money was spent as it will be in January if we are struggling then we could have a really exciting season.

Comment #4Can’t see any reason to sign Grenier…
Midfield already has;
Sissoko
Tiote
Anita
De Jong
Cabella
Aarons
Gouffran
Bigi
HBA
Where would you play him?
Our midfield is looking like it’ll be 5.
Tiote, Sissoko, Anita, Cabella and De Jong.
Unless we sign him and then implement some sort of rotation, or Anita is dropped….I dunno, just not sure we have space for him…
Is he a typical number 10 or something else? Not sure about him positionally.

Comment #5Edd case – Perhaps we want Grenier as one of our midfielders is leaving? Tiote? Sissoko? Ben Arfa? I think 2 of them 3 might be sold, definitely one I think!

Since when should you not have good backup players? Don’t you reckon either Tiote, Anita, Moussa, SDJ, Cabella, Gouffran etc might pick an injury between them?
Do Chelsea only have 5 good midfielders?
The depth he would bring would be immense.
But, we need a CF and a CB more. So yeh, if we manage all 3 then great!
Beggars can’t be choosers mate. Let’s not turn down opportunities to sign quality players yeh? Seems silly! 😉

Jay Rodriguez at £15m/£20m or Benteke for the same amount, I’d rather have benteke as he has a better all round game and is more destructive than rodriguez. Rodriguez is similar to what we already have at the club where as a Benteke is something that we need.
As for Grenier, yes I’d love to have him at the club and can’t believe ppl say there isn’t a place for him, he’s better than what we have already but I think we have no chance in getting him especially if the others mentioned make a move for him

Sorry again but he’s injured they’ve come out and said so, that’s why he hasn’t trained AND isn’t in the europa league game squad!

Jay is in the window and confirmed for sale, and he is English, which opens another slot for a cheap French player. He may or may not be 15-20 mil but we won’t find out unless we try to negotiate. Granted he’d go to Spurs to play for Pochettino again but it never hurts to try.
Benteke is injured till October at least and will aim higher than Newcastle. It’s unlikely he would accept a transfer at this point and he already came out to say he isn’t interested in moving today. 15-20 mil price for him is pure speculation as Villa might as well ask for 30 just to keep him. They are pretty much like we were with Carroll back in the day.

Bigi and Aarons are young, Aarons might have something to offer this season. We also have Sammy Ameobi in that category.
Abeid actually looked really good the short time he played in the Wellington game before going off with an injury.
Besides, you left out Collback which will fight for a place on that midfield.
With all these names we might even have an OK midfield for the cup games.
And from what it seems, HBA will not be playing for us.

Comment #14I think we need to put to bed these rumours about Captain Colo swanning around in Argentina last year, when he missed lots of games. It was reported that he had to return home because of “personal family problems” – he then fractured his spine or a vertebrae in his spine and then had to go home for top medical treatment which was not available in Europe. Additionally it was
understood that Colo sought the services of a rain forest tribes’ shamen to assist
in the recovery. The shamen recommended the application of a special poultice on
Colos’ injured spine -the poultice could only be prepared in South America and
consisted of the spit of the yellow tree frog along with the entrails of a newly killed
jungle cock as well as other secret ingredients. The shamen also recommended
some unusual physiotherapy which was jumping up and down repeatedly and waving
his arms around in the air. We were lucky to see Captain Colo practising his physiotherapy on the terraces of a local football club. There was clearly no swanning around by Captain Colo. The shamens poultice did the trick, Captain Colo regained full health and returned to the Toon. Let’s not hear any more talk of swanning around.

Comment #17If we want to be a top team, we do NEED grenier, we need competition for places, that’s what creates fight and passion from the players, its what makes them work, too many times last season we had players like Debuchy, Anita, Sissoko not putting any effort in coz they know they are guaranteed a first team spot.
Look at how many midfielders chelsea have:
Matic
Hazard
Oscar
Schurrle
Willian
Salah
Fabregas
Van Ginkel
Mikel
Ramires
How many we would have if Grenier came:
Tiote
Anita
Sissoko
Colback
Grenier
de Jong
Cabella
Gouffran
Sammy
Aarons
If you want top 4, you need the quality and depth to compete

Comment #19Edd Case – I agree, I don’t believe for one second that Ashley is about to fork out £12 million+ for player we don’t desperately need.
….and if he did, then we might as well forget buying a striker.

What’s that about Loic’s name?! I thought they pulled the plug after Borini refused to move to Sunderland, that’s the most reasonable explanation. Probably his medical results played a part as well but I find it unlikely it was the decisive factor for Rodgers. I do believe Remy can literally break goalscoring records in a team like Arsenal or Liverpool with those midfielders to create chances for him.

Comment #25This guy was saying 5 hours ago that Grenier has had a long standing groin injury which screwed up the end of his season and stopped him going to Brazil. However he has been on an intensive rebuilding programme which he has strangely interrupted since Monday he was spotted with his documents from Rhone hospital (to show to another clubs medics?)
Two interesting things he says however
a He thinks he’ll go for only €10million (Lyon are hard up)
b He thinks it will be one of the Milans

Comment #28How come we say no to a player like Grenier… amazing..
We don’t have pure playmaker since cab
Left.Grenier is pure playmaker, which we r
looking for since January. siem is a striker
like Rooney mold, which we will use if we land the french wiz kid.
So this is a massive opportunity for us to get him if we want to play in the CL soon.
Besides we don’t have enough creative players if sth happens to siem dj..
Please charn.. don’t mess it up..

Comment #40pizzicato – the reasons that Liverpool gave to stop the Remy transfer -ie the medical – appear to be so fallacious it defies logic/sensibility. The “piss take” was the story about his name -equally fallacious -thereby intoducing the comedy of irony into the story -making the whole saga ridiculous.
