There is news today that Tottenham Hotspur are very close to signing Newcastle target – 20 year-old Eric Dier from Portuguese club Sporting Lisbon.
Eric Dier – moving to Tottenham
The Mail is reporting that Tottenham are close to a deal for the Englishman for around £4M.
The young defender has played for all the England Youth sides and 5 times for the England U21 side, and he was born in Cheltenham and moved to Portugal more than ten years ago, when he was just 10 years old and his mother got a job working in Portugal during the 2004 European Championships.
Eric joined Sporting Lisbon shortly after, and the 6 ft 2 ins defender has played 30 times for the Sporting first team over the last two seasons with one goal.
We had hoped Newcastle would be able to sign this lad, but it seems the north London club have won the race to sign the player, and we have missed out on another Englishman – or so it seems.
Newcastle’s French defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa is set to leave the club this summer, and we need another center-back brought in.
However, Newcastle do have three good young center-backs coming through the ranks in Curtis Good, Remie Streete and Lubo Satka, with the last two playing last night at Hillsborough.
And maybe the Magpies think one or two of them will be good enough to fill in for Mapou, assuming he leaves the club this summer and returns to France.
What do you think?

only reason i said our forward play was improved slightly is this….
Cabaye, gosling, ameobi and remy left
Sdj, cabella, perez and rivierre came in
now, where as cabaye and remy are the best two players on that list, ameobi and gosling are so bad that i believe that overall, the four replacements add up to slightly better. Just my opinion. Cabaye has been replaced adiquately with diffetent style players.
We do still need that goal getter to complete the jigsaw, but creativity wise we are in a more promising position, as we are not reliant on.just one player now.
We have not improved in defence. Desperate for a CB

Comment #3Almost more upset about this than not signing another striker. Our CB defense (Saylor, Willo and sadly now Colo) is beyond poor.
4M would be an absolute steal for this guy as Spurs are pouncing before Sporting insert a 16M buy out clause. Real chance missed.
Just hope MYM is either staying and can improve or that Good, Satka (who looks good) and Streete can step up.

I’m one of those pessimistic pain in the ass NUFC fans with over 40 years of support behind me…I am readying myself for another disappointing season…Apologies for the negativity!

Comment #5If that is true about Spurs getting Dier then that is yet another so called target slipping thru the net.
Dier is unproven, but at 4m he would be worth the gamble that Spurs are taking,a gamble that we are not prepared to take. It makes you wonder just how much money Ashley is prepared to release, if any.
It worries me.
Its ok having lots of attacking options but it counts for nothing if we are letting in goals left ,right and centre.

I think MYM playing alongside Colo would probably benefit both players. Colo is slow but still organised and aware, while MYM is athletic. Trouble is, one of them gets injured and we are struggling. We are desperate for a CB, and if MYM leaves we may even need two, unless as you say one of the kids hits the ground running.

Comment #7Why are people on here saying that because Everton have splashed out big money on one player that now all of a sudden they are going to Finnish higher than us. For all you know he could be crap this season.

Comment #8Notice that Ayoze seems to have overtaken Aarons as the new toast of the blog thanks to a goal against Sheff Wed. He now seems to feature in peoples starting 11’s. It was Sheff Wed. In a pre season friendly. Give the lad a chance, rather than bugging him up to then knock him when he struggles in the Prem – like Dummet last year. Let the lad develop without heaping all this un warranted hype on him.
I can guarantee that some will be saying he has been Pardewed in a few months, when the reality is, he isn’t ready yet.

Comment #9He’s only 6ft 2″ though. Didn’t Pardew say they have to be 6ft 4″ to win headers at corners?

No worries,i didnt actually take it as negative, i thought i should explain exactly what i meant, because my original post was a bit vague. I agtee with you that we are in for another tough season if we dont get those 2 more players we need.

in footballing and technical ability terms colo and mym would be my choice as they are light years ahead of saylor and Willo, but sadly neither are any good in the air.

Okay, okay, they can all play! Please don’t put me down as Pardewed – or even worse Padewed 😉
At least if the kids played Ashley wouldn’t need to worry about an empty stadium as their mama, dads, uncles and aunts would all come to watch!

Comment #18I think we are going to sell Mapou just to put money back in the bank.
I get the feeling Pardew dosn’t see much of a gap in quality between Mapou and our up and coming centre backs. Therefore cash in and use the money and wages saved elsewhere. Makes sense, but will we see the money? And will we actually dip into any money made by the club this summer disregarding player sales.
Why won’t we spend what we have? There has to be tons of cash available and we only need another 2-3 quality experienced players to be bolstered and balanced.

Comment #21Toon Prodigy, Ashley wants to spend the minimum to tread water.
We’ve got some good players in at good prices so far, but what is the point when he doesn’t get the few more of Siem and Cabella quality and a new manager in.
This is why he is just doing the bare minimum for mediocre mid table finishes.
There’s no excuse not to get these extra few quality players. We haven’t signed anyone in the last two windows and he’s only spent the Cabaye and Debuchy money.

Comment #23I would have liked us to have taken a punt on dier
but with the reserves we have streete satka good all waiting in the wings to get there chance in the first team
the club are looking to loan out mbiwa he needs to go and play regular football and given the fact he has looked shaky on nz tour its not a bad idea, but are we loaning him to boost his value so we can recoup our money or loan him to bring him back to the first team,
time will tell
good has more experience than satka but satka has done well preseason both can play and have played fullback
although not ideal to play cb there a few sub appearances at full back in the last 15 20 mins to get the used to it wont harm them
the league cup kicks of early in the season and one of colo’s biggest assets is he seems to instil an air of calm in the defence, with him next to either of them is the way to bring them through, depending who we get in the cup of course

Lor’ luv a duck! yeah we need big players who can ‘ead da ball at set pieces. Know what I mean?
Ironically I’d take Sporting’s other guy – the Argentinian Rojo. Immense defender but probably 3 times the cost of Dier.

Meanwhile, as the season’s opening nears and our need for players increases, then so will selling clubs’s fee demands.

Comment #28Nufc signings r similar to how we play in the league we can never go the last mile everybody and there granny can see we desperately need another striker but more so a CH taylor is always injured and be honest has never been good enough colo has lost his speed and is prone to mistakes that lead to goals mpw could b better in his second season but we have a numpty for a manager who does not give him a good run he commits a mistake and he takes him out and willo like everybody says great bloke but in football who cares he is slow cannot pass bad positional sense and trithfully a championship player so to sum up really good midfield add a striker and comfident we can get goals defence we will b slaughtered

Comment #29Do Pardew & Co not realise that NUFC has to improve the defence!?
This is a missed opportunity to sign quality at a good price – is that not Ashley’s mantra!?
