After winning three games on the trot without conceding a goal, Newcastle were beaten by a good-looking Malaga side in Germany this afternoon, and the Spanish side were 3-0 up at half time, after the Newcastle defense did not look good in that first half, and the team failed to close down the Malaga players.
A great goal from Darder after 25 minutes and a brace from Castillejo was the difference between the two sides in the first half, with our back four looking a bit shaky, but things improved a lot in the second half as Newcastle tried to get back into the game – and Pardew got a reaction from his players in the second half after a poor first half display.
And Newcastle got one back after 60 minutes with a great goal from Gabby Obertan, who got the ball from a corner, and beat his man on the edge of the box and hit the ball brilliantly into the back of the net.
And Gabby may leave us this summer.
SA poor first half display from Newcastle this afternoon but much improved in the second half is the bottom line of this game.
Heres the way we saw it this afternoon.
Newcastle started this game slowly with Malaga having more of the ball and Darder missed a good chance after 23 minutes when he headed the ball over the bar from just six yards out and should have done better.
But then a couple of minutes later, the same player had the ball played back to him and he sent a fantastic shot from 25 yards screaming in off Elliot’s left hand post, to put a good Malaga side 1-0 up.
And then after 32 minutes Malaga doubled their advantage when Jesus Gamez made a good run down the right wing and got to the bye line on the right, looked up and chipped the ball over to Castillejo, who was completely unmarked (where was Mapou?) and he hit the ball first time with his left foot past Elliot and into the back of the net.
It was 2-0 to a who looked the sharper side in the first half.
And then after 43 minutes Castillejo scored his second when he hit the ball with his left foot – but the ball looped across Elliot into the goal when it was deflected off Yanga-Mbiwa and Newcastle were 3-0 down at the break against a good-looking Malaga side, who looked much more threatening than the Magpies.
Alan Pardew made four changes at half time with Yoan Gouffran, Manu Riviere, Gabby Obertan and Rolando Aarons coming on and Adam Armstrong, Sissoko, Perez and Cabella all off.
Both sides went close after 54 minutes with Ignacio Camacho heading wide from a corner when he found himself completely unmarked and then a minute later Mbiwa-Yanga headed over from six yards out when he should have scored, and after 60 minutes a good shot from Gouffran was deflected wide.
And then from the corner the ball was played to Obertan who beat his man brilliantly and hit a great shot into the back of the net – Obertan is showing he’s a good player when he’s in the mood.
Paul Dummett and Vurnon Anita came into the game for Jack Colback and Haidara and ten minutes later Mike Williamson made his first appearance in pre-season replacing Fab Coloccini and Haris Vuckic came on for Mehdi Abeid – as Pardew gave his subs some playing time.
The game was much more even in the second half as Newcastle tried to get back into the game, but Newcastle couldn’t get another goal, which would have made it interesting.

Comment #41I can garantee that, should we win tomorrow, people here will still be picking all the negatives out of it and ignoring any positives. No one has said much about winning the second half 1-0 after making changes.

Why is moaning about this game a bad thing. Did you see the first half ?
They were a team that were going to be a big test for us, This game told us how well our first team starters play and tbh we were dreadful. Mainly the back four.
Yes it is only a pre-season game but that first half shows nothing has changed since our form at the end of last season.

Comment #43Looks like another long season of lucky wins and utter hammerings
Out at the first in both cups, defeat to the mackems twice etc
But most if all its the dire boring brand of headless chicken football
Cant wait.

Comment #48all of the players that have played so far before today’s match, everyone on here have been praising the squad that they have been doing well, and today because we lost the match now all of a sudden people on here are saying get rid of this player and that player to be honest it’s quite pathetic really.

We did not push up on the Malaga defence , they had it easy throughout the game ..knocked it about from the back ..always had a man in position when in possession, to receive a pass, even in tight situations ..no rush for them ..they also played some good 1-2 touch football..they are a Team
Newcastle ‘s passing was rushed and chancy, 40 yard balls played out of defence only in the hope of a Newcastle player getting on the end of it ..it was poor percentage play . We gave them a lot of time and just never pushed up on them only getting a foot in in the last third ..
Malaga tore us a new one showing Pardew how to play as a team.
The team is fractious just now . many new faces means we are not a settled Team ..we can give it time ..See what transpires .
Unless the football philosophy changes ..and it wont imho..Pardew is going back south before October comes.
“To many youngsters today” said Alan .
You pick the Team Alan.
Here we go again.
