Newcastle 1-0 Up At Half Time – Great Goal From Riviere – Video

5:38 pm, Sunday, August 3rd, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 133 Comments

Here’s the goal after 18 minutes that had Newcastle leading 1-0 at half time against Schalke 04 this afternoon, with some great work on the left wing from 18 year-old Rolando Aarons, and just a superb header from Riviere and so far it’s a much improved display from the Magpies – compared with the first half yesterday against Malaga.

Ok. They had quantity of posession, but i think we had more quality on the ball when we managed to get hold of it. I would like to see us have control in the second half. Ferry to come on and get a goal or two. This is not exactly pretty, but it is much better than yesterdays first half. I think we should sub Aarons. The ref has his eye on him, and i dont think he wants to take him out for dinner and a movie!

  • 2 Beatroll25 // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:42 PM

We need someone like Uroš Spajic. A lad with the potential to be the next Vidic.

Will put his head anywhere and will fight non stop. A good, young eastern European CB.

  • 3 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:42 PM

    Beatrol

Never heard of him, however if he is a decent young CB then sign the bugger up yesterday, if not sooner.

  • 4 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:43 PM

Yep Mark….he’s pissed the ref off somehow, similar to how shola used to.

  • 5 martoon // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:44 PM

You can say what you like about Willo’s limitations but when he plays we look more solid!

  • 6 pedro // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:44 PM

Excellent goal and nice to see us actually create something down the wings. Aarons looks a decent talent and at the moment gives us something that we do not have in the squad – a quicky, natural wide player who can cross a ball.
Very good header by Riviere too.
On the Ferreyra subject – a little worried that everytime Pardew mentions him he uses his height and the word physical. He is not a just some target man who you lump the ball up to.

  • 7 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:45 PM

Direct comparison between allardyce and pardew at nufc….. pardew better statistacally. See? It could be worse :D

  • 8 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:48 PM

    Pedro

i am not too concerned. Ferry had ball skills, and his hight and stength will give us the option to be more direct if we need to. Most teams occasionally need a direct option now and then. As long as it doesnt become Plan A :D

  • 9 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:48 PM

This is textbook Pardew and the only formation we look like we know what we are doing under him is 4-4-2 .

Also Rivierre & Arrons impressing .

  • 10 Uncertain Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:49 PM

    Repost

Containing football again, with random sparks of counter attacking play and the odd Willo set piece, however we’ll take that 1-0 at half time.
Aarons has been that stand out youngster so far in preseason, deserves to be brought in to 1st team squad.
Now, stop messing about Pardew and bring Chucky on for 2nd half, really looking forward to seeing this lad play as he appears to have all the tools required.

  • 11 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:49 PM

I still can’t dislike Pardew as much as Allardyce.

He was the absolute worst ever for me.

    Still, Pardew could be second.

  • 12 Pottsclock // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:49 PM

    Sammi or Aarons ?
    It’s a no brainer.

Not convinced that Colback should be our set play taker. Clearly he is doing so at the moment but will be interested to see whether SDJ or Cabella take that role.
Set pieces have been cr*p for the last couple of seasons

  • 13 piers18 // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:49 PM

Glad Chucky’s there! Think they’re done for the window. I would like a CB and a holding mid.

Anyone else think we’re set for the season?

  • 14 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:50 PM

@Uncertain Toon – “odd willo set piece” – is that a joke? That set piece hasn’t worked and we’ve tried it every single time for 4 years!!

Nice work by aarons on.the wing there and a well taken header.
Schalke are no mugs either. How strong is the team they’ve put out?

  • 18 Ketsbaia9 // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:52 PM

Ferreyra’s only 187cm. He’s no Giroud or Carroll.

  • 19 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 5:53 PM

Possibly satka at rb? Anita up to cm with abied

  • 37 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:02 PM

Kets, you said Marveaux has the potential to be better than Messi, is Aarons now as good as Bale?

  • 38 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:02 PM

I still wish we’d play some better football though.

  • 39 TrustSean // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:02 PM

Not really a shot as far as I could tell. Still a sick goal. More, please :)

    Facundo on .

  • 41 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:02 PM

    Beatroll,
lol. Yeah, he will be almost as good as Perez was after scoring against Sheff Wed. In fairness to the lad he has looked decent again, but 99/100 the keeper claims them and the player gets abuse for terrible cross.

Still, direct sideman. Lots to like about him, but lots still to prove.

  • 42 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:03 PM

There are some great players over the years who have fluked goals exactly the same way.

  • 45 Uncertain Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:04 PM

    gonufc@14,

Only described what I saw pal. Odd Willo set piece as in, now and again during that half.
Fully aware it’s Pardew’s preferred set piece from day one.
Maybe you misinterpreted what I meant, unless you were joking with me ! Haha

  • 46 Sliema // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:04 PM

    Lilongwe

    Perez isn’t playing.

  • 47 gonufc (Newcastle United Sports Direct Advertising Club) // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:05 PM

@uncertain – yeah, I was only joking, not having a go.

  • 48 Ciaran // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:05 PM

Was pre-occupied for an hour and missed two goals. Assist and goal by Aarons?

  • 49 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:05 PM

    Sliema,
I know. Not sure how that relates.

  • 50 Beatroll25 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:06 PM

I remember Sammy having a similar pre season about 2 years ago (the one where we invaded the pitch) and people were clamoring for Sammy to start. He did and he was rubbish.

Brendan knew what to do with Raheem Sterling. Slowly brought him in until he saw he was ready to start games.

We should do the same. 100% put him on the bench, don’t start him against City.

  • 51 Sliema // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:07 PM

    Lilongwe

    Oh yeh! Haha. My bad.

  • 52 IITianToon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:08 PM

SOmeone has conducted an experiment on Ober, and made him a totally different player..

  • 53 Uncertain Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:08 PM

    Beatroll25

Agree mate, blood him slowly, bring him on when we’re winning instead of relying on him

  • 54 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:10 PM

    Sliema,
Read it again, get what you were thinking. As I think you have gathered I was talking about Aarons and the hype that may follow similar to perez last week.

Aarons wouldn’t get a sniff against Zabaleta, don’t play him against City. Villa on the other hand he could be played, from the bench though.

  • 55 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:10 PM

It is starting to look as if it’s Saylor that is the problems in any 2CB pairing.

  • 56 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:10 PM

    Lilongwe

    yes. Yes there are :D

Overall we have had more control over this second half, despite lots of subs. Happier today than i was yesterday.

  • 57 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:13 PM

Cabella looking keen and with some nice touches

  • 58 Uncertain Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:13 PM

That ref is gash by the way

  • 59 Ian Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:14 PM

Lilongwe – Very noticeably our movement off the ball is so much better. But as we were saying ………. you shouldn’t read much into pre season friendlies.

  • 60 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:15 PM

Where did get this Obertan from…?

  • 61 Novocastrian66 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:16 PM

Aarons has been excellent. Is already ahead of Sammy.

  • 62 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:16 PM

    Markaccus,
Yeah, we have looked okay today. But again, it is still pre season and I don’t see a huge amount that has encouraged me yet. I still don’t think the defence is up to scotch, we still don’t look a good side, and goals in pre season don’t mean a huge amount.

I’m certain there will be a positive swing on the blog today, just as there was a negative one yesterday. There are still gaps in the squad, and a lack of cohesion throughout the club.

  • 63 Sliema // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:16 PM

    Lolongwe

It would have been pretty hilarious if you had thought Perez had been playing, you see why I had to point that out at the time lol.

Yeh, I just think there’s a fine line between protecting young players, and not giving them a chance.

It’s too difficult to make an impact from the bench imo, I think he has earned a start v Villa.

  • 64 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:17 PM

    Ian

exactly. Just as yesterday should not induce panic, today should not create euphoria. We still need a dominant CB and i still think we could use a recognised goal scorer, although that does depend on how Ferry turns out

flopped – what a goal Cabellaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • 72 Ian Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:18 PM

Mark – you were brave yesterday and your getting your reward today. It will help player confidence.

  • 73 Beatroll25 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:18 PM

  • 75 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:19 PM

    Ian,
Some of the movement last season was good. The movement in at least one game in NZ was good. Pre season is pre season. It is still about settling people in, building fitness and growing as a unit. Once we start doing it regularly in competitive games (or not as the case may be) then we can be happy (or panic). So far, it has been a very mixed bag that is difficult to read anything into.

  • 76 Uncertain Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:19 PM

Great hassling by Chucky and good confident finish by Cabella.
Is there a glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel?

  • 79 Bambams // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:20 PM

    Obertan has done well
    credit where credit is due.

How well did Remy finish there.

  • 80 Mike's Iron Curtain // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:20 PM

Obertan performing very well once again. Done nothing wrong and a heck of a lot of good. Those blinkered by hatred, entrenched in their view, won’t see otherwise, which is hypocritical, as many of them, rightly, lay that at Pardew’s door.

Good finish by Cabella there. I think this is confirming that Pardew can only set a team up to effectively play in a 4-4-2, which his past would also suggest.

  • 81 Toonfan8 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:21 PM

if Gabby can play like this, I know he has it in him, but he has to know that :D strong and fast lad, with good skills look

Lil……can I enjoy my team winning please. Lol

  • 83 Sliema // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:22 PM

Please Pardew. If you don’t play Saylor or Elliot, then we’ll be alright!!! Simples :D

  • 84 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:22 PM

I don’t want to see us play anything other than 4-4-2 or 4-4-1-1 under Pardew . Its all he knows and how we got the majority of the points in the 5th place season . Might not be pretty but the best we can expect under him I’m afraid .

    Team for City:

    —————————Krul——————————-

    –Janmaat——–Willo——–M’biwa——–Haidara–

    —-HBA———Sissoko——–Tiote———Cabella–

    —————————-De Jong————————-

    ————————–New Striker———————–

  • 85 Mike's Iron Curtain // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:22 PM

I hope never to see that class clown at CB again. Willo is twice the man, professional and footballer. Him partnered with either Mbiwa and Colo, it has to be, the only one that commands the backline and dominate the immediate space around him.

  • 86 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:23 PM

    Mikes iron curtain

we played 4231 in NZ and attacked so maybe the old dog has learned new tricks :D

  • 87 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:23 PM

    Sliema,
I have had a few to drink, but I wouldn’t make such a simple mistake, often. The thing about starting Aarons against Villa is that it is also a good time to play our new signings and help them settle.

Pardew protects the kids too much sometimes, but some of them need that. I’d give Aarons the last half hour against Villa

  • 88 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:25 PM

    Clinath,
No!! I thought part of being a member of this blog was that you weren’t allowed to enjoy things! Don’t make me get Ed to ban you for not adhering to blog rules!

  • 89 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:26 PM

    BPC,
HBA, howay man. Stop flogging a dead horse. He is a definite non starter against City.

  • 90 Tayls // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:26 PM

I was just saying I dont have much faith in Dummet but I’m sure Perez is a striker isn’t he?

  • 91 geordie157 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:27 PM

Obertan is all about confidence, if he’s relaxed he’s a good passer and plays some decent stuff. Don’t mind him as a squad player, at least he’s in shape unlike that lazy ben arfa.

  • 92 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:28 PM

…did you say a FEW to drink?

  • 93 Ian Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:28 PM

Lilongwe – your missing my point. I am, have said don’t read too much into pre season football. However, noticeably with confidence growing now( as opposed to yesterday) players are showing for the ball. My earlier post still applies nothing radically has changed the difficiencies still exist. Hopefully Saylor is now not viewed as being a starter- we need a CB and to improve in other areas I mentioned.

  • 94 Sliema // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:28 PM

    Lilongwe

The bew signings will get the game time for sure. But what’s the point in having a pre-season if you don’t take the form into account for the new season?

Just pick a new signing ahead of him cause we’ve paid a fee?

And anyway, we can still fit De Jong and Cabella in, see how Rivière is for playing wide or CF and take it from there.

It’s a tough call though. But a nice dilemma to have! ;-)

  • 95 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:29 PM

Yes, but I haven’t enjoyed them! Promise.

  • 96 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:30 PM

  • 97 clinath@ed // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:31 PM

Ian. It does make you wonder if the players get a little stage struck. Certainly playing better when the pressure is off.

  • 98 Belfast // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:32 PM

    Obertan played very well.
Handy squad player if he keeps it up.

  • 99 Big Pappa Cissé // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:32 PM

I still think De Jong is our best signing, he oozes class .

  • 100 Markaccus // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:32 PM

Freindlies can almost be split into two seperate games due to mass substitutions, NUFC have won 3 out of 4 halves in this tournament. Being OWNED yesterday by the eventual winners was the only blott on the copy book. Pardew needs to build on this weekend, hopefully realise who should be in the back four (or in particular, which CB should NOT be in it!)

  • 101 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:34 PM

    Ian,
No I get your point. I didn’t agree with the negativity yesterday, just like I’m not going OTT today. We still have very similar problems to last season. I see no reason so far to get edited. A centre half is a must. I will give Chucky the benefit of the doubt as I know very little about him. Good pre seasons don’t mean good seasons. Just as bad ones don’t mean a bad season.

    Sliema,
No, not cause we paid a fee for them, but because they are far more developed players. I like Aarons, he was on my list 2 years ago of youngsters that have a good chance of making the grade, but I’d prefer to ease him in then throw him in the deep end.

Just wondered if they have had Obertan working on the weights in the gym -look like he has more strength now. If the new fitness coach has prepared personal fitness plans to suit each player that could be good – might even see HBA back to his best – that would be good for all concerned

  • 111 Ciaran // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:40 PM

Decent performance by a couple of the lads. Hard to gauge the season’s readiness from a pre-season friendly against a massively depleted Schalke side, but encouraging signs from a few of the lads.

Even if we’d had lost that game I would ave been pleased by the performance, very good pressing from the whole team especiall in the second half. Well Done lads feel slightly more optimistic for the season ahead now :)

  • 121 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:45 PM

Much improved performance today and some good showings from the new boys, especially Cabella (HBA Who?)!
But MOTM has to Rolando, very good pre season from him

Pardew promised a much improved performance so credit where it’s due but it’s still pre season non the less so won’t be banging the “were ganna win the league man” drum yet ;)

  • 122 martoon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:46 PM

I agree about Cabella – funny though yesterday he was too lightweight and fell over too easily :) However I would have given MOM to Aarons not him.
It was only a pre-season friendly but I’d rather be a Toon fan than a ‘ammers one :)

  • 123 welshgeordie9 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:46 PM

I said yesterday i hope we win so we can can shut the moaners up

  • 124 welshgeordie9 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:47 PM

So where are you then you miserable lot

  • 125 beefman13 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Fair play, the kick up the arse worked, got to be switched on from the get go in every game, well done.

  • 126 Ian Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:49 PM

Clinath- yes. We had so much more pace and interchange play and movement. We were never as bad as so many said we were yesterday and were nowhere as good as many will no doubt say we were today.

  • 127 Pottsclock // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:51 PM

To be honest, I was very impressed by Obertan. I think it must just be a completely mental thing with him and I still wouldn’t trust him near the team….but credit where it is due.
Impressed by Riviere – he can do a job for us.
Perez – not so sure what he offers that Armstrong and Campbell don’t – but it’s early days.

West Ham have much bigger problems than us.

  • 128 beefman13 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:53 PM

Welsh, fans have a right to moan if you watch a performance like yesterday, as we know today was so much better against a team who are in a very good league and in the champs league, so u take the plaudits when deserved and the moans when u play bad like yesterday, and make sure u right the wrongs.

  • 129 firebug666 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:53 PM

    welshgeordie9

We have proved one thing, we can win against poor teams, so guess we can welcome the 6 points of Swansea this season.

  • 130 Ian Toon // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:57 PM

I thought Harry might have come in for Saylor before going for Rio and Caulker. I hope were not looking to offload Williamson because offers more than ST. We do need a creative midfielder, brute of a CB and a proven PL goalscorer. I would still not rule out Remy despite what has been said by Pardew.

  • 131 Beatroll25 // Aug 3, 2014 at 6:58 PM

Well with only 2 weeks to go I’m going to offer my opinions on the squad and where we need to strengthen.

    GK:
Krul – Number 1 keeper but under no pressure.
Elliot – Not good enough for PL and should be 3rd choice/sold.
Alnwick – Probably needs to be loaned out to League 1 team. Worked wonders for Forster a few years ago.
Conclusion – Need another GK, possibly a young keeper to really push Krul.
Recommendation – Gerorge Long (Sheff Utd)

    DEF:
Jaanamt – Not seen anything but looked decent for Holland.
M’bwia – Do not play at RB, start him at CB and give him a chance.
Saylor – Sell. He had potential but has made a living out of being a geordie.
Willo – Prone to a mistake, never any better than back up.
Colo – On the decline but still decent. If an offer came in, he wouldn’t be a big miss if he was replaced.
Santon – Still has masses of potential. We should keep him for sure.
Raylor – I’d like him to prove me wrong but I think he is finished as a RB. Maybe a deep lying CM but his knees will have gone and he had no speed to begin with. Keep as back up.
Haidara – Competition with Santon and I think has a big future.
Ferguson – Just hasn’t come on sadly. Sell.
Dummet – Poor player for me, doesn’t offer anything so sell/loan.
Conclusion: Weakest area of the team for me. Too many average players. I’d like to see a good young RB come in to offer competition and a solid CB to replace Saylor.
Recommendation: Sam Byram (RB, Leeds), Uroš Spajic (CB, Toulouse)

    Mid:
Sissoko: Need to stop playing him at RW and start playing him as a marauding CM. Technically he will never be a player that sticks to CM but flying box to box and stretching the play by heading to either flank woul be good for us.
Anita: Underrated and never has a decent run in the team to really show his class. If we are keeping the ball he is sublime, under the cosh not so good.
HBA: A must start. If only Pardew knew how to play him!
Jonas: Not been good enough for 3 seasons now. No big loss when he goes.
Bigirimana: Needs a loan to play first team football r else he could lose his way.
Tiote: Excellent on his day, but his day doesn’t come often enough. Will be a starter under PArdew regardless of form until AFCON. Needs to show form again.
Obertan: Fans hate him (not me) and he doesn’t have the mental strength to cope. Sell him or keep him for away matches only.
Sammy Am: Isn’t good enough. Needs a season loan to prove me wrong. Shouldn’t be anywhere near the starting 11 or bench.
Vuckic: Make or break for him. Keep him in and around the team and let him prove his worth.
Colback: Bench at best but I think Pardew will put him in with Tiote every game.
Abied: Good player but wouldn’t be missed for me.
Siem: Could be great, fingers crossed.
Cabella: Is a top player but I fear for him under Pardew.
Aarons: Could be gem but too early to say for sure.
Conclusion: We lack quality in the middle and thanks to Pardew’s stubbornness we will never see the best of the players we have. Inviting pressure onto our midfield is an invitation for disaster. Still think we need a creative CM.
    Recommendation: Grenier (Lyon)

    ATT:
Riviere: Looks good and suited to the PL.
Cisse: If we could play attacking football and serve him up the chances he would rediscover his brilliance.
Ferreyra: A predator, probably will be similar to the Cisse situation.
Gouffran: Stop playing him at LW/AM and play him up front. Tireless runner and a decent player.
Perez: Good back up and full of potential.
Campbell: Potential again is a key word but needs a loan at a decent team.
Conclusion: I think we are okay up front. I of course would like another CF but don’t think it is as essential as some. No point having a CF if we can’t create for them so if we are going to sign anyone it needs to be someone who creates sommat out of nowt.
    Reccomendation: Matias Suarez (Anderlecht)

  • 132 NUFCKID95 // Aug 3, 2014 at 7:37 PM

Campbell, Armstrong, Bigi, Aarons and Sakta need to be loaned out this season; preferably to championship teams (maybe Campbell to league 1)

These players need experience asap, they all show real potential

  • 133 Robby Bobson // Aug 3, 2014 at 11:36 PM

Not seen much of this forest lad, but harry maguire was the one for 2.5 million, fantastic business by hull that was
