Newcastle 1-0 Up At Half Time – Great Goal From Riviere – Video

Here’s the goal after 18 minutes that had Newcastle leading 1-0 at half time against Schalke 04 this afternoon, with some great work on the left wing from 18 year-old Rolando Aarons, and just a superb header from Riviere and so far it’s a much improved display from the Magpies – compared with the first half yesterday against Malaga.

Ok. They had quantity of posession, but i think we had more quality on the ball when we managed to get hold of it. I would like to see us have control in the second half. Ferry to come on and get a goal or two. This is not exactly pretty, but it is much better than yesterdays first half. I think we should sub Aarons. The ref has his eye on him, and i dont think he wants to take him out for dinner and a movie!

We need someone like Uroš Spajic. A lad with the potential to be the next Vidic.

Will put his head anywhere and will fight non stop. A good, young eastern European CB.

Never heard of him, however if he is a decent young CB then sign the bugger up yesterday, if not sooner.

Yep Mark….he’s pissed the ref off somehow, similar to how shola used to.

You can say what you like about Willo’s limitations but when he plays we look more solid!

Excellent goal and nice to see us actually create something down the wings. Aarons looks a decent talent and at the moment gives us something that we do not have in the squad – a quicky, natural wide player who can cross a ball.
Very good header by Riviere too.
On the Ferreyra subject – a little worried that everytime Pardew mentions him he uses his height and the word physical. He is not a just some target man who you lump the ball up to.

i am not too concerned. Ferry had ball skills, and his hight and stength will give us the option to be more direct if we need to. Most teams occasionally need a direct option now and then. As long as it doesnt become Plan A 😀

This is textbook Pardew and the only formation we look like we know what we are doing under him is 4-4-2 .

Also Rivierre & Arrons impressing .

Containing football again, with random sparks of counter attacking play and the odd Willo set piece, however we’ll take that 1-0 at half time.
Aarons has been that stand out youngster so far in preseason, deserves to be brought in to 1st team squad.
Now, stop messing about Pardew and bring Chucky on for 2nd half, really looking forward to seeing this lad play as he appears to have all the tools required.

I still can’t dislike Pardew as much as Allardyce.

He was the absolute worst ever for me.

    Still, Pardew could be second.

    Sammi or Aarons ?
    It’s a no brainer.

Not convinced that Colback should be our set play taker. Clearly he is doing so at the moment but will be interested to see whether SDJ or Cabella take that role.
Set pieces have been cr*p for the last couple of seasons

Glad Chucky’s there! Think they’re done for the window. I would like a CB and a holding mid.

Anyone else think we’re set for the season?

@Uncertain Toon – “odd willo set piece” – is that a joke? That set piece hasn’t worked and we’ve tried it every single time for 4 years!!

So what I have learnt these past 2 days is that we need a creative CM, a back up RB and a quality CB and need them asap.
