Ben Arfa May Help Newcastle Get Lyon Target

11:56 pm, Monday, August 4th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 126 Comments

It may go down to the wire for Newcastle,  as to whether we can get either Alexandre Lacazette or Clement Grenier in from Lyon, but maybe Ben Arfa’s potential move back to Lyon could help that effort.

ben arfa yellow stoke

Ben Arfa – could move to Lyon

Ben Arfa joined Lyon in 2002 after he graduated from the French Academy at Clairfontaine, and he was at Lyon for six years until he joined Marseilles in 2008.

And Lyon President Jean Michel Aulas has admitted today that he would be interested in bringing Ben Arfa back to the club.

This is what he had to say to RMC:

“Ben Arfa to make a return? If he is willing to make the necessary financial effort, why not?”

We’re sure that Lee Charnley and our recruitment team will be using this angle in trying to get either Clement Grenier or Alexandre Lacazette to Newcastle before the end of the transfer window – or maybe even both.

It’s along shot but possible.

Newcastle are on a roll at the moment in the transfer market, after getting Argentine striker Facundo Ferreyra in on a season long loan yesterday for £1.6M.

And as long as 20 year-old Nottingham Forest players Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow pass their medicals at Newcastle, they will become Newcastle players – probably tomorrow.

Both were at Newcastle on Monday taking their medicals, and it looks like it will cost Newcastle £7M in total for the young players, who will be loaned back to Forest for next season.

But there was news tonight that Forest manager Stuart Pearce was against the transfer and didn’t want it to happen because he thinks the value of the two players will keep going up.

And he’s probably right – so it already looks another good deal for Newcastle, with the players being ones for the future.

Comments welcome.

    I hope so.

    Anyone watching the game tonight?

  • 2 kilcline // Aug 4, 2014 at 11:59 PM

    Decent business:

Swap Ben Arfa and couple of mill for Grenier
Flog them MYM if they want him and maybe swap with Lacazette and some cash.

    Sign Richards for £6m.
Flog Taylor to someone like Leicester for £2m.

    Job done.

    In Richards, Lacazette and Grenier.
Out Taylor MYM and Ben Arfa.

  • 3 KevinHann // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:07 AM

And that leaves us a CB short – nice deal.

  • 4 Jeff from Benwell // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:07 AM

Just yesterday on Lyons own website Aulas was saying if the money is right then Grenier can leave
I believe OdL are quite hard up

  • 5 YohanKebabShop // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:12 AM

It’s just not that easy fella as I’m sure you know…

Also not so sure Micah Richards is all that??

  • 6 jimmysmith // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:25 AM

That would take some wheeling and dealing. A season long loan maybe, with us supplementing his wages, and a decent deal on one or both of their lads. Seems a stretch, particularly as Benny is quite clearly insane.

  • 7 Sliema // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:26 AM

Hahaha!!! Did it start to gradually dawn on you that his plan was rather flawed whilst you were reading it too? That was enjoyable.

  • 8 KevinHann // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:31 AM

    It wasn’t that gradually 😉

  • 9 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:32 AM

or swap Benny with Umtiti. That’s one of the targets listed in the blog a while back.

  • 10 NZGeordieviaAfrica // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:32 AM

YohanKebabShop – I agree on the Micah Richards front, I’m not quite sold on him especially cos he’s played so little the last two seasons. We do however need a CB badly as everyone seems to know except the powers that be??? Just use the swap and cash to get Lacazette and forget about Grenier. Work on one striker and one CB (preferably a starting CB)? Are there no French CB’s going on the cheap? What about in Holland?

  • 11 KevinHann // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:32 AM

I’m at a loss where Grenier would fit in the current team, unless Sissoko leaves. On the other hand he wouldn’t be a bad option to have if De Jong is injured all the time.

  • 12 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:35 AM

Maybe swapping Umtiti and Lacazette, but no to Grenier because we are well stocked in midfield.

  • 13 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:35 AM

I mean getting them with Benny going the other way.

  • 14 Ethiotoon // Aug 5, 2014 at 12:59 AM

who do u support, mu or liv ? & why ?

  • 15 Sliema // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:03 AM

I don’t understand the peeps who don’t want Grenier. I know there are bigger reqs atm.

I’d personally spend the supposed £15mil being thrown around as our CF budget, on a CB!

But Grenier would bring our strongest Midfield I can remember, it would be a real statement. Imagine having that strength in depth!

If we want to be a top club, we need proper squad depth.

(we also need a CB with more than 12 brain-cells)

  • 16 Sliema // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:05 AM

Good question. I really hate both of them, but Utd are seriously an enemy.

    51% Liverpool.

  • 17 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:06 AM

well, if we mean to keep a lot of midfielders on the bench or lose Sissoko, we could have Grenier. Not that we don’t want him, but we have a squad that’s not in balance.

  • 18 BOOM BOOM THE 1ST // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:08 AM

Makes me laugh people calling for ben arfa make weight deals for no matter who. If he cant get use of a player with that much talent theres no guarantee with anyone out there. Such a waste.

  • 19 Sliema // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:10 AM

    We need depth to compete!!!

Dude, how many ‘reserve’ players would walk into our team from the actual big clubs? A lot is the answer.

We need a CB, who can cover RB preferably, but another quality midfielder would be great for us, no doubt.

It’s not about leaving people out mate, it’s rotation, injuries, suspensions, players on poor runs of form. The extra competition for places will give them all a big kick up the backside.

  • 20 BOOM BOOM THE 1ST // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:11 AM

    Q. How much would another ben arfa cost? A. There isnt one available. Hes the answer the gaffer needs checking. Ben arfa would flourish under a harry or martinez.

  • 21 Sliema // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:13 AM

Nobody flourishes under a Harry mate. Don’t go there. You’ll not be trusted again.

Martinez is such a phenomenal manager btw. He’s really top-quality. I see him as Barca coach within two seasons.

  • 22 BOOM BOOM THE 1ST // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:14 AM

Sliema same could be argued bout some of our 1st teamers. With a better gaffer theyd be at top.

  • 23 YohanKebabShop // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:16 AM

Umtiti is a little short at 5’10. I think he’s better as a left back so I wouldn’t really want him.

Micah Richards is lacking in defensive understanding, for example his positional sense is very poor. Although he is athletically very good he is very injury prone as well.

I like Fabian schar and rudiger from Stuttgart. Admittedly I’ve only seen each of them about a dozen times but they’ve looked great every time.

  • 24 Bradley // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:21 AM

Why would you not want grenier?? Hes a beast and we havent really got a proper playmaker yet!! We could play
    Sissoko-de jong-cabella

That would be perfect!! Definitely be a top 8 club if we signed them 2 then maybe even a top centre back to partner colo antonio rudiger or virgil van dijk weve been in for them before so maybe we might sign a few more you never know. Its looking bright ahead for the toon

  • 25 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:24 AM

Umiti has speed which we lack, at 5’10 he has a good reach when jumping he’s a bit like Andre Ayew when it comes to jumping for the ball

and at a young age as well he will improve all the time and will become one of the top defenders in world soon.

if I’m honest I would rather have him then both Grenier & Lacazette

  • 26 YohanKebabShop // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:30 AM

I may well be wrong but I can just see umtiti being outjumped by lots of centre forwards.

After all you can have all the leaping ability in the world but if your at a 6 inch disadvantage you’re gonna struggle.

Size does matter lads… Despite what the missus tells you 🙂

  • 27 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:30 AM

    squad depth?

this would be good if we were competing all the time for cups but for now we have a good balance in midfield.

people say we need a striker and a CB and that’s job done but they don’t realize we need 2 right wingers, Sissoko doesn’t belong at RW and should not be placed there considering for France he play in CM and was a beast

  • 28 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:33 AM

I’m 5’10 myself and I can jump/leap rather high for my height maybe about 9-10 foot.

never judge anyone by there height

  • 29 YohanKebabShop // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:40 AM

Yeah but it’s not just height because a good striker knows how to use a size advantage to position their bodies where the shorter defender can’t challenge effectively.

Our defence is already too short,

Colo 6′ including all that hair so probs in reality 5’11
    Yanga mbiwa 6′
Taylor 6’2 not bad but can’t jump
Willo at 6’3-6’4 is the only one with height and he’s our most solid defender.

  • 30 Pizzicato The Arizona Geordie // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:45 AM

We should get Crouch to play CB for us.

  • 31 Kris // Aug 5, 2014 at 1:53 AM

When did the Forest keeper suddenly got 20 years again?

  • 32 Bradley // Aug 5, 2014 at 2:42 AM

Apparently were looking to make a bid for virgil van dijk the celtic centre back hes rated at 10m but I think we’d probably be able to just about half that so 5-7m for him hes 6ft 4″, he scores from set pieces and hes actually quite quick it would be such a good addition if we sign him!!! Then grenier as our playmaker? Maybe straight swap for ben arfa. Then go for lacazette with tv rights money I hope we sell mbiwa he isnt good enough for bpl and pardew doesnt even play him in his cb position… hopefully 3 more major signings to come shortly

  • 33 deeps // Aug 5, 2014 at 3:06 AM

Man United won comfortably 3-1 :O

  • 34 Ashton // Aug 5, 2014 at 3:23 AM

We need a quality CB. It’s our weakest position. Manolas will be perfect for our club. He is a phenomenal CB and if we get him his price will triple within a year of playing for us.

    Kostas Manolas. Remember the name.

  • 35 Ashton // Aug 5, 2014 at 3:28 AM

We’ve been linked with him previously. He has the tools to be one of the best CB’s in the world.

  • 36 toonicle // Aug 5, 2014 at 3:38 AM

YohanKebab- Don’t say that too loud, you know how Pards loves his left backs.

  • 37 lesh // Aug 5, 2014 at 3:55 AM

If Kostas Manolas is another Nicos Dabizaz, yes please.

  • 38 Santon03 // Aug 5, 2014 at 4:50 AM

I would rather have Lacazzete than Grenier.
Give Lyon to choose 2 or 3 players HBA, Marv, Obertan, Guti or maybe all of them just for Lacazzete + some cash if needed.

  • 39 Santon03 // Aug 5, 2014 at 4:53 AM

I think we are the most active team in transfer market right now and I’m already happy if we don’t buy anymore.
I hope we are gunning for all competitions now and has to win at least one or finished 4th, if not then pardew should go. This is his last chance and nomore excuses.

  • 40 Santon03 // Aug 5, 2014 at 4:55 AM

In reality we will be very lucky to get 10mil for HBA, Guti, Marv, Obertan.

  • 41 toonicle // Aug 5, 2014 at 4:57 AM

Santon- Marv is already gone and honestly squidward has looked rather promising so far. I see no problem with giving players a clean slate as far as performance more or less when a new season starts.

  • 42 Santon03 // Aug 5, 2014 at 5:52 AM

you are right, i didn’t know marv is gone.
well, if obertan stays then hopefully not just good in pre-season.

  • 44 Spoof // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:21 AM

Rudiger is the CB I’d go for, about 6ft3″, 21 year old and all ready a full German international , and they aren’t a bad side are they.

  • 45 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:24 AM

Veltman would be my choice for a CB

  • 46 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:28 AM

Rüdiger is not a bad shout either

  • 47 Spoof // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:29 AM

  • 48 jesperfuglsang - capt'n awesome of the lemon crew // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:37 AM

Joel Veltman (Ajax), a very promising CB. But we probably do need a tall and physical CB right now?

  • 49 nut meg // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:43 AM

Someone mentioned this player earlier today, forget who but I looked him up & he’s the nephew of Greece’s most famous defender. It looks like he’s got a good leap,I’d like to see more of him or hear from anybody who’s actually seen him play.

  • 50 gazzaforever // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:46 AM

I love how people here rate Grenier without having seeing him play not even once. Tools. He s injury prone and nowhere near Ben Arfa s level and talent. Btw Aulas said in his interview that Ben Arfa was the most gifted player he ever saw in his life as president.

  • 51 Spoof // Aug 5, 2014 at 6:50 AM

The Dutch market is in our price range so he could be affordable, go for both and give Colo a free, wage bill would be about the same but the team much better

Blind is class but he’s strongly linked with Barcelona.

  • 55 Slank // Aug 5, 2014 at 7:13 AM

    Jesper @ 41

It all depends upon which country you refer to as to when WWI started.

Some would say it was 28th June when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. For Britain it was when we declared war and that was 4 August. For the USA it was belately 6April 1917. The only date that everyone agrees on is the 11th hour on the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

    BTW, did Denmark participate ?

  • 56 Slank // Aug 5, 2014 at 7:24 AM

    gazzaforever @ 48

Yes I sometimes wonder how it is that some Newcastle fans can spend so much time watching foreign leagues sufficiently enough to assess how good so many players are.

But with Grenier, who I have actually not seen, there must be something very good about him in order to be a regular in the French national team. Being a member of your national squad has to be as good a sign as there can be that a player is quality although there are always exceptions – England !

  • 57 Ian Toon // Aug 5, 2014 at 7:24 AM

Slank – You’ve done what you often do on here, moved the goal posts. The official start of World War1 was June 28, 1914 when Franz Ferdinand was assassinated.

  • 58 Slank // Aug 5, 2014 at 7:25 AM

Can’t help it. It’s in my nature !

  • 59 Jeff from Benwell // Aug 5, 2014 at 7:26 AM

Denmark remained neutral and her merchant marine carried all kinds of goods for all the belligerents.
Some Danish shippers made huge fortunes from the misery of the Great War.
That’s why Jesper calls Mike Ashley a fat greedy kernt ,
it takes one, to know one.

Fifa should give the club a 10 year ban from playing anywhere outside of the UK, and they should be find by the FA with maybe a large points deduction.

Mindless behaviour like this is what got English clubs such a bad reputation abroad in the past and both the FA and Fifa need to come down hard on the club and set an example showing this sort of behaviour will not be tolerated.

Remy Cabella is hopeful that he can help end Newcastle United’s 46-year wait for a trophy this season.

The Magpies last lifted silverware in 1969 when they won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, but new recruit Cabella is confident of stopping the rot.

“I hope we can win a cup this season,” the Daily Mail quotes the 24-year-old attacking midfielder as saying. “We play for that- to win a trophy”

“There is a good feeling in the team at the moment and my adaptation is good. I have friends who are French and I am very happy to be here. I am just waiting for the first game now.”

Newcastle get their season underway with a home match against Manchester City.

You arent talking from knowledge because your foot never stamped in the middle east.. And markaccus its one of the two- either you are indeed anti semtic or you are just an idi*t who cant to distinguish between good and bad…

Also looking through a telescope with a blind eye is a bit cheeky !

  • 101 israeli_fan // Aug 5, 2014 at 8:41 AM

Now lets talk just about football

  • 102 gazzaforever // Aug 5, 2014 at 8:41 AM

Slank, he s not a regular at all in the national team. I am not saying that he is crap, though, but he s not as good as most of you think he is. He s always injured and had only 2 good games last year. People here are talking about him like some kind of god without knowing him at allm that s insane.

You have just proved my point about your peoples attitude against anyone who does not 100% agree with you. This cycle of revenge on revenge on revenge is fcuking rediculous. Both sides as bad as each other, and neither side will accept that fact. Result? Everybody dies.

    Funk…started what?

  • 106 firebug666 // Aug 5, 2014 at 8:46 AM

I am pleased everything went well for you and your girlfriend. The report said that fans from all the other three clubs involved mingled and had a great time. Only the West Ham supporters where separated.

The report also said that WH supporters were punching children, if that’s true it is disgusting and the club should be banned from all international games.

    Slank…it is mate…it is 🙂

…do you think that counts as contextual intelligence as well?

*I might not have that after all then…shoot!

  • 108 Slank // Aug 5, 2014 at 8:49 AM

    gazzaforever @ 102

I thought he was. Depends I suppose what ‘regular’ means.

Wiki says he has represented his country at every level including 5 times at full international level.

  • 109 israeli_fan // Aug 5, 2014 at 8:49 AM

Ok you are right and i am wrong.

Israel are worse than nazi germany, and hamas are the organisation who try to make peace.

    @ Jesper

Israeli fan Started a discussion of Israeli actions on football blog by mentioning Joey Bartons tweets on Israel – he didn’t need to mention it.

    For everyone!

The seeds of the current rampage in Gaza were laid in the decades of Israel’s dispossession of the native population, culminating in the Nakba of 1948. Most of the population of Gaza are refugees from that period – their grievances and rights unaddressed all these many years later. – See more at:

Religion and money have f***ed this race. Hamas and the israelis are as bad as each other. Can’t make peace for 5 f###ing minutes.
There is never a good reason to take a human life.especially not from a distance with rockets. It’s like throwing a dart at a map and saying “Ok we’ll kill those people”
Both sides are guilty of this too

  • 120 firebug666 // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:01 AM

Is there any need to start gloating. You came on here and disrupted the blog with you political garbage, have good football posters leaving, and the you sit back and gloat about it.

You need to grow up pal, and maybe pass out a few apologies.

  • 121 Slank // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:03 AM

Everyone is entitled to their own opinions but not necessarily in public and not in a forum where the topic is primarily football and specifically Newcastle United and possibly all things Geordie.

  • 122 israeli_fan // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:03 AM

i will take your advice, i have no intention to speak on the subject.

  • 123 israeli_fan // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:05 AM

just to make things clear- i didnt come here especially to talk about our conflict, i am a member here for over 5 years at the blog, i just said joey bartons tweets about israel are disgrace, thats it

  • 124 firebug666 // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Good man, now maybe we can all get back to football.

  • 125 Mr Funk // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:13 AM

    @ Israeli Fan

You must have thought that mentioning Joey Bartons tweets about Israel are a disgrace would lead to a response from other?

Anyway, we should all stick to football matters only

  • 126 gazzaforever // Aug 5, 2014 at 9:47 AM

Markaccus, for once I totally agree with you, Israeli, go somewhere else if you wanna talk politics. Here you can discuss about Gazza, not Gaza.
