Newcastle have been interested in Dutch centre back Virgil van Dijk for over two years now , and there is a report that Newcastle are readying a bid for the defender who joined Celtic last summer for around £2.6M.
Virgil van Dijk – Newcastle readying bid?
There was news earlier this summer that Newcastle were interested in signing the 23 year-old who started his career at Groningen, so we don’t know whether it’s just a rehash of the news from then.
But Celtic want big money if they are to let their top center-back leave the Glasgow powerhouse, and it’s just a pity Joe Kinnear didn’t go after this lad last season, especially when he pulled Newcastle out of a deal to sign Douglas, and when that happened Managing Director Derek LLambias quickly resigned from his position.
The price on van Dijk’s head is now said to be a massive £10M.
Celtic have not done well in the Champions League this season, and were beaten 4-1 in the first leg of their qualifying round against Legia Warszawa last Wednesday, with the return leg at home taking place tomorrow night.
That’s why Celtic may now elect to cash in on their top center-back, and maybe that’s why Newcastle have gone back in for the center-back – if this news is true.
Also Virgil will hardly be looking forward to playing only Scottish Premier League matches for this season, with the league being ranked number 24 in Europe.
Newcastle showed there is still a question mark over some of our central defenders, with a terrible first half performance last Saturday against Malaga, and we were 3-0 down at half time and it could have been even worse.
If Newcastle do manage to sign the Dutchmen, then we could possibly sell both Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Steven Taylor this summer, or at least one of them, to recuperate some of the funds, even though it seems both want to stay at the Tyneside club.
Last season Virgil played 47 times for Celtic with 5 goals and in three appearances this season, the 6ft 4ins defender has already scored two goals.
