Newcastle Ready To Bring In Another Top Defender

Newcastle have been interested in Dutch centre back Virgil van Dijk for over two years now , and there is a report that Newcastle are readying a bid for the defender who joined Celtic last summer for around £2.6M.

Virgil van Dijk

Virgil van Dijk – Newcastle readying bid?

There was news earlier this summer that Newcastle were interested in signing the 23 year-old who started his career at Groningen, so we don’t know whether it’s just a rehash of the news from then.

But Celtic want big money if they are to let their top center-back leave the Glasgow powerhouse, and it’s just a pity Joe Kinnear didn’t go after this lad last season, especially when he pulled Newcastle out of a deal to sign Douglas, and when that happened Managing Director Derek LLambias quickly resigned from his position.

The price on van Dijk’s head is now said to be a massive £10M.

Celtic have not done well in the Champions League this season, and were beaten 4-1 in the first leg of their qualifying round against Legia Warszawa last Wednesday, with the return leg at home taking place tomorrow night.

That’s why Celtic may now elect to cash in on their top center-back, and maybe that’s why Newcastle have gone back in for the center-back – if this news is true.

Also Virgil will hardly be looking forward to playing only Scottish Premier League matches for this season, with the league being ranked number 24 in Europe.

Newcastle showed there is still a question mark over some of our central defenders, with a terrible first half performance last Saturday against Malaga,  and we were 3-0 down at half time and it could have been even worse.

If Newcastle do manage to sign the Dutchmen, then we could possibly sell both Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa and Steven Taylor this summer, or at least one of them,  to recuperate some of the funds, even though it seems both want to stay at the Tyneside club.

Last season Virgil played 47 times for Celtic with 5 goals and in three appearances this season,  the 6ft 4ins defender has already scored two goals.

What do you think?

Remy 10m (atleast) only 8.5m for CL club
    Grenier 10-12m
    Alderwield 10m

Yeah because we will spend that mate.

I said the same above would love to see it happen. But it wont.

I would keep Williamson as back up, especially over STaylor and RTaylor and I would sell Ben Arfa as he is nothing short of trouble and could disrupt the squad on any sort of good run.

I’d rather we didn’t sign a “top” center half from that glorious league to be honest.

Always dubious about signing defenders from SPL, the word ‘Boumsong’ springs to mind. VVD looks a decent player, but then again, so did Boumsong.

Virgil would be a great signing, him and Mbiwa could be a star pairing for us for years.

Unless you register an underage HG player….. which arguably is a waste of a squad number in terms of registration.

@8, no, but Dick Van Dyke did often entertain Alan Shearer as a child, with the words ‘Cheer up Mary Poppins’.

    All good thanks mate. You?

Not given up on the other blog at all, but it’s my birthday today and it seemed as good a day as any to pop back on this blog, especially considering the transfer window might have chased away a few of the “neggers”! 🙂

Still no confirmation on the Forest duo!? That seems rather odd especially when their medicals were supposedly done yesterday.

Don’t know much of this Virgil guy and yes Boumsong does spring to mind when we are looking at defenders from the SPL.

    Current Squad thats requires registration

    GK (2)
    Krul, Elliot

    DF (9)
Janmaat, RTaylor, STaylor, Mbiwa, Williamson, Coloccini, Haidara, Dummett, Santon

    MD (10)
Anita, Tiote, Colback, Sissoko, De Jong, Ben Arfa, Cabella, Gouffran, Sammy, Abeid, Obertan

    FW (3)
    Riviere, Cisse, Ferrerya

Squad memebers that do not need registered.

    GK (1)

    DF (2)
    Streete, Satkho

    MD (2)
    Bigirmana, Aarons

    Campbell, Armstrong, Perez

Players who do not make registration

    GK (1)
    Darlow (loan)

    DF (3)
    Ferguson, Good, Lascelles (loan)

    MD (3)
    Marveaux (loan), Vuckic, Jonas

Arguably Ben Arfa may not get registered which Vuckic will replace.

Think its a decent squad, we require a goalscorer (Remy?), Cabaye replacement (Grenier?) and a Centre Back (Manolas, V Djrk, Alderwield)

    Midfielder next?
    Van dijk

People settle for mediocrity in many aspects of their lives on a daily basis. We accept jobs we hate, we deal with friends who let us down and we let our significant others get away with sh*t. Why do people choose to be complacent instead of moving where there are better opportunities?

Life is just one big cost-benefit analysis; we make decisions by comparing the outcomes of different courses of actions. People assume that certain actions should not be taken unless the benefits outweigh the costs. It is the fundamental evaluation behind practically every decision a person will make in his or her life.

“It’s easier sometimes to be stuck in a familiar rut or habit, albeit a depressing one, than to look outside the habit and have a life that is more desirable.”

People are terrified of change, failure and taking risks. This is one of the main reasons people settle in life. It’s not about unrealistic goals or perfection. It is about changing the things you can to be happy, not simply drifting along in life and complaining. It is far easier to settle than it is to leave our comfort zone. We create endless excuses to justify our complacency and all that it will result in is our looking back with regret and a slightly bruised ego, wishing we hadn’t settled.

We settle in our relationships too because we are scared to be alone and lose the stability a relationship offers. Fear paralyzes people and holds them back. Many people suffer with tremendous amounts of self-doubt and are unable to believe they are good enough. There are always better options out there, but too many people have low self-esteem, which prevents them from realizing this. It’s better to be alone than it is to want to be alone.

“Change the way you think, change the way you feel, raise the bar and don’t settle for mediocrity.”

As technology evolves, our levels of patience have been dwindling. We lack fortitude as a society and unfortunately make the mistake of choosing the first option presented to us. Some people are tired of dating or being alone, so they pick up the first person that says the right thing. It takes time, effort and patience to find the right person. This also applies to life goals such as embarking on a new career path. Things worth having take a lot of time and effort, which many people do not want to exert either.

Although something may not be what someone really wants, it is likely that it has become a habit and it’s more comfortable to maintain the status quo than to challenge themselves. You have to fight through all the obstacles that lie between where you are and where you want to be.

“The minute you settle for less than you deserve, you get even less than you settled for.”

People are lazy; they don’t want to have to make too much of an effort even though they are unhappy in their present situation. They lack the confidence, ambition and drive necessary to succeed. Many times, people get so frustrated with life that they feel that settling for something will create the happiness they desire. People will constantly complain about their present situations, but will do nothing about it. They have to want to change these things.

We use the past as a crutch to justify the reason we put up with different things. We need to stop trying to use the past to validate the present, if anything we should use it to motivate us to act differently.

“He that deserves nothing should be content with anything.”

Mediocrity is a place where people often get stuck and do not know how to escape. This is a mindset that can only be changed with mind renewal. In order to move from this place, one must think differently, get rid of what hasn’t worked, connect with those who can give sound direction, design a plan of action and put that plan in motion.

Life is way too short to settle for anything less than what we truly want. The only way to embrace your potential is to stop settling. We are only limiting ourselves and wasting our precious time. The moment we begin to settle in the most important roles of our lives is the moment we begin to die a slow death. Excellence is a place where people who refuse to settle for mediocrity live; it is where one reaps from all the hard work sown. It is a journey of continuous progression toward the goals in your life.

Sell ben arfa for abput 8m or straight swap for grenier thats our cm playmaker sorted… then bid roughly 5-8m for virgil van dijk. Thats leaves only a striker? Remy or lacazette with the tv rights money

    SSissoko–de jong–cabella

If we had that squad we’d make top 6 without a doubt!!

    Are you MA in disguise?

    8.5m Remy?

    6-7m Alderwield?

    7-9m Grenier?

No wonder we never sign players if thats the offers you put in.

Its a well known fact Remys clause for a non CL team is 10-11m

Grenier has been quoted 16m euros which is about 13m, you mayeb able to knock a couple of million off that perhaps 3 so you will look at 10-11m

Alderwield was bought for 6m. Played in WC had a decent tournament, and was in the league champions and CL finalists teams bench last season. I think his value would have went up abit despite the lack of first team football, Athletico have no doubt seen him as a replacement for players leaving this summer in the back four. Surely his value will be approx 8-10m.

I think Sissoko and Gouffran are more than capable of switching flanks. So writing Cabella on the LW is kind of a formality.
However, note that Pardew played him in LW and #10 during the Schalke cup, not RW.

I have absolutely no doubt a lot of the blog will be overjoyed if we can have Sissoko playing both LW and CM as you have in your perfect team!

Having said that I agree with you in every position, noting that Mbiwa needs a tall physical CB beside him, so I would eplace ?? with Willo.
