Hats Off To This Newcastle Youngster – And Happy Birthday Too

In January of last year it looked like Mehdi Abeid’s time was up at Newcastle, and in the previous two seasons he had made only five first team appearances,  since signing on as a free agent from Lens in the summer of 2011.

mehdi abeid

Mehdi Abeid – in action for Panathinaikos last season

Alan Pardew shipped him out on loan to St. Johnstone in that January, and only because there were no English clubs that wanted to take him on loan, and while north of the border he played 12 times for St. Johnstone.

And then last summer, Newcastle would probably have sold Mehdi if a decent offer had come in, but they shipped him off to Greek club Panathinaikos, and he had an excellent season there, playing 38 times with 10 goals for the club that finished 3rd in the Greek Super League and won the Greek Cup.

So the least Alan Pardew could do this pre-season was take a hard look at the Algerian who was born in France, and Alan Pardew has done that.

Mehdi has looked solid in central midfield during pre-season, and Pardew has given the las a lot of playing time.

And if the local papers are to be believed,  Mehdi will be part of the first team squad for next season, even though it seems Panathinaikos wanted him on a permanent basis for £300K earlier this summer.

It takes character and guts to turn you career around, when it looks like it’s all over at a (big) club like Newcastle, and Mehdi deserves great credit for his comeback last season in Greece, and his good play for Newcastle in this pre-season.

This lad still has a chance to make it at Newcastle – and we hope that’s exactly what happens, although he still has work to do.

But Mehdi already knows that, and he will be stronger for the experience he has gone through over the last couple of years, and what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.

And the youngster turned 22 today – so happy birthday to him.

We might have spent around £35 million but we also got rid of cabaye, tavernier and debuchy so that must have brought in £25-30 million.
Would be willing to bet we’re still around the +ve to evens mark for transfers in the Ashley era.

Yeah we would have spent eff all net.

Want to see our net spend over the last 5 years, im guessing we would be bottom.

Must spend £20m more this window.

Will say Abeid has looked okay on this tour but I feel he is wasted playing as a defensive midfielder as it is not where he excelled last year

He’s looked good, could take SDJ’s place for early cup games and see how he does.

nufcismylife – well done for putting your head above the paraphet to be fired at 🙂 I think most would agree we definitely need a commanding CB maybe even in preference to a striker but let’s be greedy and get both!
I find it laughable when people suggest we spend all the TV money on players – I’m no accountant but I would imagine that £10’sm is required to run NUFC each year especially for players astronomical wages. However I agree we should spend some of it, say, £20m, on a ST & CB 🙂

I am pleased for Abeid but he still has a lot of work to do to be among the first 11 or bench. His long balls are suspect and often wayward. He has good vision but is sometimes slow to act upon it. I have some hope in him and believe we should hang on to him and send him out on loan to a Championship team for him to acclimatize himself with the English game.

Can’t understand why people think Richards is a centre back. His best position is at right back. We don’t need him. We need Alderweireld, Grenier and Remy to challenge the top 4. I don’t think our squad is far off Liverpool. Only Chelsea, Man City are Arsenal are well ahead of us at the moment.

given the fact last year we made a profit of about 10mill
and the extra tv revenue was about 25-30

there are the training ground improvements to be paid for but I would hope they would spread that over a couple of years and new stadium lighting to pay for

we know the club wont spend all we have so I think we 10 15mill left to spend but unless players leave I cant see any incoming as they wont want the wage bill to up

Abeid shone in Greece last season but will he cut it at SJP ? Not with Pardwho around.

Let him go back and enjoy his football. If he makes it then we get a sell on fee.

beermonkey @16 – I think your rough calculations are probably about right and if the Lacazette offer rumours are true then it all seems to fit – obviously the wages would be roughly balanced by HBA going the other way.

One thing that I have noticed that we are totally missing since Cabaye left is someone to make those long accurate passes to the opposite side of the field there was a few games in pre season where we had the opportunity to switch it and we never done it the full back was in position but no one had the vision

Technical ability wise maybe Vuckic could make those kind of passes but he is made of glass so we still need like a Grenier type of player in as well because we need to stretch the play Arsenal and Liverpool are amazing at those type of passes

riviere seems to get into good positions that’s a good sign
we seem to have gone from no striking options to having lots and we could get Lacazetteon top of that

Have to say I am amazed at newcastles summer business….strength in numbers…that 11 purples was always gonna be a losing proposition.

If true, adding Lacazette and a young upside potential CB to the mix would be great business and may even give newcastle quality depth for a deep cup run.

Thank you newcastle for giving me belief in warching you again!

any player coming into the league is an unknown no1 knows if they will be a hit or a miss

I really want a centre back and with the options up front of chucky riviere dejong and perez and the up coming youngster I didn’t think the club would invest in that position so I am a little surprised

Nothing on GFN_France concerning the Lacazette rumour. I hope it’s true and we grab him. Has pace to burn and has quick feet also. I just love forwards blessed with pace.

The EPL is all about Pace and Strength these days and in recent years we have seriously fallen behind in this respect-mainly for supporting Strolla for all those pathetic excuses for performance (so glad I don’t have to see that tool play for us again).

I’ve been banging on about that for years, the nightmare is finally over… phew!

Over the past hour, reports have emerged across the internet from a number of reliable news outlets that a deal to sign Alexandre Lacazette from Lyon has been agreed.

According to The Independent, a fee in the region of £15 million that may or may not include Lyon academy product Hatem Ben Arfa has been agreed.

However, as it stands, the player’s personal terms are yet to be agreed.

The 23-year-old Lacazette scored 22 goals in 54 appearances for Lyon last season, and he was unfortunate not to be named in the 23-man France World Cup squad.

The only apparent stumbling block that still remains is the player’s supposed reluctance to join a team that isn’t playing European football. Rumours have been circulating all Summer regarding this move, and many outlets had assumed that the deal was off. But this news will certainly excite the Geordie faithful who haven’t seen such a successful Summer window for years.

If NUFC are able to capture the signature of the young striker, he will be the marquee signing of a Summer that has included the purchases of Siem De Jong and Remy Cabella. There have so far been 7 new faces confirmed by the club, with two more expected to be confirmed over the next few days.

A fee of around £7m has already been agreed with Nottingham Forest for the signings of young starlets Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow. Both players supposedly carried out their medicals on Monday, and are only waiting on official confirmation from the club now.

Now Celtic have crashed out of the Champs league, what are the thoughts on Van Dijk? potential for a late deal there I hope.
Surely bringing in Lacazette is overkill? Unless Perez and Armstrong drop down to the under 21’s, I’m more concerned about the CB frankly.
