Newcastle put in a good workmanlike performance against Real Sociedad today and deserved the win, which came from a good Moussa Sissoko late goal – but it was that man Gabby Obertan who showed some classic wing play on the right to set up the goal.
Alan Pardew at St. James’ Park today
Gabby has been in the best form we have seen him in at Newcastle in pre-season, but he could be sold in this transfer window if a club comes in with the £3M Newcastle want for him to get their money back.
We would like to see Gabby stay and be used and given games this season, but he has to become a much more consistent player.
As far as Newcastle’s best team goes for Sunday, it looks fairly obvious the defense that started this game and the game at Huddersfield will also start against Manchester City.
That’s Krul, Janmaat, Coloccini, Williamson and Haidara.
And then it depends on what formation Alan Pardew will play against City and what the associated game plan is.
But in the corresponding game last January, when we were beaten 2-0 after having a perfectly great Cheick Tiote goal disallowed, Alan showed he can put together some excellent game plans – which he did for most of the first half of last season.
And with there being considerable pressure on Alan to produce this season, especially in the early games – he will be motivated to get the game plan absolutely right for next Sunday.
If he goes in what seems to be a well used formation of 4-2-3-1 he could field the following side:
Janmaat, Coloccini, Williamson, Haidara
Sissoko, De Jong, Cabella
We are assuming that Check Tiote will not be fit – and if Siem de Jong doesn’t make it on Sunday, then Yoan Gouffran or even Facundo Ferreyra could play the withdrawn striker role.
What team and in what formation would your team be for Sunday?
One thing is for certain – the bench will look strong on Sunday, and Rolando Aarons must at least make the bench, because he was a threat when he came on for Gouffran in the second half today, and this lad can create chances with those mazy runs and good crosses from the left wing.
It should be a good game next Sunday, and Newcastle are in with a decent chance of getting something out of the game.
