Magpies In For Striker Who Dreams Of Newcastle United

10:11 pm, Wednesday, August 13th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 50 Comments

There are reports coming out of Italy tonight are that Newcastle United are after Palermo striker Abel Hernandez.

Abel Hernández

Abel Hernandez – Newcastle in for striker?

We were first linked with the 24 year-old Uruguayan International in February, and at that time, this is what he had to say in Gazzetta dello Sport:

“I am reborn because we have to win the Serie B title.” “Enough with nightclubs, “Instead I go to church with my mother and score goals to get back to Serie A.”

“I decided to stay – I owed it to Palermo owner Maurizio Zamparini and the fans.” “In the future I dream of Newcastle United, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.”

The news this time is in Tuttomercatoweb, and they are reporting that Newcastle United would be willing to pay a fee of around £8M for the striker, but that Palermo’s transfer fee may be a lot higher than that.

Hernandez has also been in talks with Torino and maybe some other clubs, with the view to a permanent move, but it looks like Newcastle are now in for the player.

His reference above to  “enough with nightclubs” – is because he has something of a reputation of doing things he shouldn’t be doing off the pitch, like drinking and going to too many of those night clubs, but it seems he may have (grown up and) come to his senses.

Hopefully he has grown up and come to his senses.

The striker scored 14 goals in 28 league appearances for Palermo last season, and in five seasons he has played 122 games for the Sicilian club with 36 goals, and he has 14 caps for Uruguay with 7 goals.

And last season, Palermo easily won Serie B with 86 points and lost only six of their 42 league games, and were a full 17 points in front of second placed Empoli.

Maybe his dreams of joining that great English club, Newcastle United, who are mentioned in the same sentience as the two Champions League finalists of last season, may even come true? 😀

What do you think?

Isn’t he the same kind of player as Cisse?

  • 2 Sazzer // Aug 13, 2014 at 10:17 PM

I wrote in the forum earlier.

Yeah I think the people picking the prices are getting ahead of themselves. He would have been nice gamble at 4 m £. Now I think there is more value picking a 6 m £ striker instead.

Real, Athletico or Newcastle, a bit like saying I like cheese, ham and custard.

Do you still have to be a member to get tickets to away games? If so, does anyone know a way around this as I’ll be around Gillingham for the league cup game?

I can’t really see us signing this lad as I don’t expect anymore incoming a in this window.
Never seen him play so can’t comment on him really and price seems a bit steep for someone untested at a higher level, although 7 in 14 got Uruguay ain’t to shabby but who where Uruguay playing?

  • 17 G // Aug 13, 2014 at 10:41 PM

I think he’s just spouti g off teams he thinks have budgets. Surprised he didn’t mention Southampton as well. Doesn’t look that special to me as a player.

dont think this story is true. according to french website aboubacar is still on list and ncle have watched him for a long time. watched him run monaco who beat arsenal previous week ragged at times is very quick and physical -i hope we can sign him and of course a central defender.

  • 37 GeordieTwo // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:07 PM

Quite worried that Arsenal will pinch him from us. 🙁

  • 38 GeordieTwo // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:11 PM

I’m quite glum today. 🙁 Nobody takes me seriously. It’s quite disturbing. Here I work me tail off getting the whole Billy Shortstrokes story out to you lot and you scoff and snigger. Harrumph.

It’s so bad it is good. I like how it will induce players to hit the wonga.

A Darthboard or rather a Tronboard.

  • 41 GeordieTwo // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:19 PM

    RIP Robin Williams.

  • 42 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:34 PM

Abel is quick but he’s injury prone and I honestly think he wouldn’t make it in PL.

If he ever came here I think he will flop and could be a possible Xisco, and we all know how that turned out!

  • 43 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:38 PM

we won’t get a CB because we have 4, we won’t get a striker because we have 4.

we need a RW and a LW ( hopefully Ayew )

  • 44 NZGeordieviaAfrica // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:42 PM

We sure do talk a lot of cr@p on here! To be honest we are desperate for a striker and defender but they aren’t coming. Just hope we don’t get a 6-0 thrashing on Sunday!!!

  • 45 jimmysmith // Aug 13, 2014 at 11:49 PM

There’s an attrition rate that occurs through sale and contracts running down. It’s hard to balance. We do have some deadwood thats hard too shift and upgrade upon. In the meantime good players lose patience and one or two leave. We seem to gradually be strengthening, but I think at this rate we are still a couple of seasons away from might look a genuinely strong group of players.

  • 48 Sliema // Aug 14, 2014 at 12:07 AM

Sorry bud. Nobody is replying to your last little gem because we’re all a bit stunned.

    If you’re being serious mate…?

Wow, I’m very sorry to hear that, I think I have a number for a professional, my friend saw him, he might be able to help you.

  • 49 lesh // Aug 14, 2014 at 12:55 AM

    Hernandez dreams of Newcastle United?

He’s not alone along with some 50 thousand who turn up in the hope of seeing a team that’ll at least try to play decent football and dare I suggest it, win.

And Hernandez dreams of a forward thinking club whose development of young players is second to none – even allowing for the odd upset such as our under 21s losing to Spennymoor (Spenny which?) 4-1 tonight!

Sweet dreams, shattered as each day dawns!
