There are reports coming out of Italy tonight are that Newcastle United are after Palermo striker Abel Hernandez.
Abel Hernandez – Newcastle in for striker?
We were first linked with the 24 year-old Uruguayan International in February, and at that time, this is what he had to say in Gazzetta dello Sport:
“I am reborn because we have to win the Serie B title.” “Enough with nightclubs, “Instead I go to church with my mother and score goals to get back to Serie A.”
“I decided to stay – I owed it to Palermo owner Maurizio Zamparini and the fans.” “In the future I dream of Newcastle United, Real Madrid or Atletico Madrid.”
The news this time is in Tuttomercatoweb, and they are reporting that Newcastle United would be willing to pay a fee of around £8M for the striker, but that Palermo’s transfer fee may be a lot higher than that.
Hernandez has also been in talks with Torino and maybe some other clubs, with the view to a permanent move, but it looks like Newcastle are now in for the player.
His reference above to “enough with nightclubs” – is because he has something of a reputation of doing things he shouldn’t be doing off the pitch, like drinking and going to too many of those night clubs, but it seems he may have (grown up and) come to his senses.
Hopefully he has grown up and come to his senses.
The striker scored 14 goals in 28 league appearances for Palermo last season, and in five seasons he has played 122 games for the Sicilian club with 36 goals, and he has 14 caps for Uruguay with 7 goals.
And last season, Palermo easily won Serie B with 86 points and lost only six of their 42 league games, and were a full 17 points in front of second placed Empoli.
Maybe his dreams of joining that great English club, Newcastle United, who are mentioned in the same sentience as the two Champions League finalists of last season, may even come true?
