There was news yesterday that Clement Grenier had told his club Lyon, that if an opportunity came up to move to another club this summer, he would be interested in taking it.
Clement Grenier – turned down Newcastle
This is what Clement in France Football yesterday:
“I asked at the end of the season, even before we knew the future of the coach, Remi Garde, if it were possible to go to another club to play with more continuity, but I did not say I want to go away at all costs,”
“I simply think that it can be the right time to try a new experience.”.
And now as a kind of follow-on to that statement from Clement, his agent Frederic Guerra has told Foot Mercato that reports that Newcastle bid for Clement Grenier last month were in fact true.
This is what Guerra had to say:
“I have been in talks with Newcastle on and off since January 2014. They were a real possibility. We looked at what they had to offer, and I preferred to say no.”
So it looks like Clement and his agent turned down Newcastle, and now the question is whether Newcastle are still interested in the French International and will go back in with an improved offer to the player.
However, if Newcastle were able to talk to the player last month, that would suggest a fee must have been agreed with Lyon.
That’s at least the way the procedure is supposed to work, with the first thing being an agreement on a fee, and then the club can talk with the player and his agent on compensation.
Clement is an excellent young player , and he is probably hoping that a bigger club than Newcastle will come in for him before the end of the transfer window – maybe one that plays in the Champions League.
And like Loic Remy before him, there must come a time when Newcastle need to move on from their targets, when they have offered them our very best deal, and they still don’t want to come to Newcastle.
We are still hopping that’s not the case with Clement Grenier.
