There are tweets going around the Twitter universe that Newcastle have agreed to pay out £4.2M for Manchester City defender Micah Richards.
Micah Richards – has he signed for Newcastle?
Take a look at this Twitter account by some Manchester City football writer, who is supposed to be in the know – but when have we heard that before?
Here is the Twitter account of @FNN_Official and there could even be some later tweets after this article has been published.
And the tweets suggest that Sunderland were the first club to agree a deal for the 26 year-old, but they balked at Micah’s wage demands.
Here are two of the tweets with the first one sent out at about 9:00 pm UK time last night, and the second sent out about one hour later:
- Manchester City right-back Micah Richards (26) is set to make a £4.2million move to Newcastle. #MCFC #NUFC
- Regarding Richards, he had agreed a move to Sunderland but they didn’t want to pay Richards wage demands. #safc #nufc
Newcastle have been linked with Micah Richards all summer, but reports in the local papers have suggested that he has never been a target at Newcastle, so we just don’t know.
That £4.2M fee is a good one if it’s true, but the other news was that Newcastle would not bring in another defender unless one moved out, and of course there was some news yesterday that Newcastle want to move our Steven Taylor, but he wants to stay at his home town club.
Micah can play at right back or center-back, and he has a lot of experience playing in the Premier League, and while at Manchester City he has played 245 games with 9 goals and 179 of those appearances were in the Premier League, where he scored 6 of his 9 goals.
For £4.2M Micah would seem to be a bit of a bargain – well at least when you consider that Ireland International Shane Long has signed on at Swansea for a massive £12M, and that fee even surprised Shane.
We’d be surprised if this news on Micah is true – but of course we have been wrong before. 😀

Comment #42Some of us wanted the gone last season we cannot just keep extending the deadline. I don’t think anyone wants us relegated, but we do fear the coach would even if it meant we would be relegated!
…that’s how much he cares about you and I and the rest of the fan base. How’s that for you?

I agree, many of us have wanted him out for a while. Sacking him now would be bad timing. Just as the season starts the pool for replacements will be much smaller. Managers in work at decent clubs will have signed new players and be interested in seeing what they can do with there new charges.
I don’t know a huge amount about De Boer’s character, but I imagine that he will be fairly loyal to Ajax, so doubt he would drop them in it just as the season starts. Same will go for the better replacements on the list.
There will still be some decent options available, but I don’t have much faith in Ashley to delve into obscurity to pluck one of them out. Looking back, we have lost Keegan early in a season, got Kinnear. Before that we lost SBR early and got Souness. Managers are far less keen to change jobs this early in the season. I’d rather wait and get the right man then rush in now and have Ashley make a hash of it.
In an ideal world he would have been gone in last summer.

Comment #49Lilongwe…it is never ideal to loose a manager early season. It needs to happen when both supporters and players are behind it if it happens.
…makes for a better transition. Like you said it should have happened in the summer. On what you said about loyalty and so on I cannot see the coach leaving for Palace at this point.

The mirror on our chances talks about a feel good factor on Wearyside?? I’m a wee bit confused at that! What has a feel good factor in that rat hole got to do with anything?

Comment #53I think Richards is another Steven Taylor in that he is a mindless CB who once had potential but now would be considered risky in the back 4.
However, I can’t help but think back to 2007, the time when the U21’s did so very well in the European championships.
The CB pairing were regarded as future stars and were the stand out defenders. Much was commented at the time about their natural partnership and how brilliant they were as a unit.
Of course they were Micah Richards and Steven Taylor.

I can’t see Palace coming for him anyway!! They will go for Malky Mackay due to his close working relationship with their Chief Exec (or whatever Ian Moody’s title is).
I think Pardew will be here until the very least Xmas, then if we are in a decent position he will see out the season. If not I imagine we will be sounding out other managers.

Comment #56I think what I am trying to say is that perhaps Richards could bring the best out of Taylor and vice versa.

Richards and Saylor as a back line? Neither can manage more than 10 games a season due to injury! They’d have to be pretty lucky to make it the same 10 games! Surely Saylor is off if there is any truth in this though? It is pretty close to a straight swap, with Richards being a better player.
Not as happy as some on here seem to be with this potential deal, but I do see it as a squad improvement which isn’t ever a bad thing.

Comment #58Sadly Palace won’t go for Pardew as there is a cost involved to free him from NUFC.
When Ashley awarded Pards with the new 8 year deal it was down to the fact he was doing well and was being tipped for England/Spurs. Ashley did what he does with all talent, sign them up to a long contract so if they do well it will cost a fortune and all the power is with Mike.
Sadly Mike failed to realise that PArdew isn’t worth anything and nobody will come near him unless he doesn’t have a contract. Who realistically is going to pay like £5 million for Pards? Ha ha
For every Cabaye there is an Obertan, a NUFC player that nobody will touch and you ask why they got such a long deal. Pardew is in that category.

Comment #60only concern I have with him is his injury record very similar to Ledley King great player but couldnt play 3 games in a row do we need that? What kind of wages would he want? Does signing him mean the end of Colo? You would have to wonder the mentality of a player who was willing to sit on the bench every week and collect his wages when a world cup was approaching and he wasnt getting a game youd think that would light a fire under him to move on and it didnt happen maybe to pampered? Englands CB’s are average so why hasnt it happen for him? All that siad if his head is in the right place and he wants to be nufc captain in 18 months and the leader of the club and back in the england team he has it in his locker alot of hard work needed tho….

Comment #62Micah is a good player not playing in his preferred role of cb and being kept out of the team by a world class zabaleta playing in his preferred right back position, don’t forget he’s first choice for Argentina. If the rumours are true I think it would be a good buy.

Comment #64If the unwashed would not pay his wage demands I cannot see ashley paying either. If Pards has his finger on the pulse as he says with transfers, this sort of player fits the bill. Just need ashley to take that extra step as I think the net spend since cabaye left is still around zero.
