At Newcastle – The Proof Of The Pudding Is In The Eating

We seem to have brought some very good players into the club this summer, but a lot of them – like Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella, Manu Riviere, Facundo Ferreyra and Ayoze Perez have never played in the Premier League, one of the highest rated football leagues in the world.

Remy Cabella scored hiddersfiled

Remy Cabella – could become big star on Tyneside

So it’s difficult to know how some of them will fare this season, but they look like good players, although they may need time to adjust to the physicality and speed of the Premier League – but hopefully not too much time.

Here’s who we have brought in so far, with hopes we could still get a couple of good players through the door before the end of the transfer window – which is two weeks tomorrow.

PlayerFeeClub
Ayoze Perez£1.4MTenerife
Jack ColbackFreeSunderland
Siem de Jong£6MAjax
Remy Cabella£8MMontpellier
Emmanuel Riviere£6MMonaco
Daryl Janmaat£5MFeyenoord
Facundo Ferreyra£1.6M - Season LoanShakhtar Donetsk
Jamaal Lascelles£4MNottingham Forest
Karl Darlow£3MNottingham Forest

We may get some indication of which of our new players are ready now for the Premier League and of course Jack Colback ha for a few seasons in the Premier League with Sunderland, and we are hoping he can have a very good game this afternoon.

But as the saying goes – the proof of the pudding is in the eating – which means that you can only ever say something is a success after it has been tried out or used – a pudding may look good but if it doesn’t taste good,  its not very good.

And in the case of our new players who seem to be talented – until they have played a lot of games in the Premier League – we cannot judge just how good they are.

But we think that players like Jack Colback, Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella, Manu Riviere and Daryl Janmaat could be terrific buys for Newcastle in the long term.

We hope so – in any case.

Obertan has looked decent in pre-season. I would give him one final chance to impress when it really matters. He could be good as an impact sub against tiring legs.

It sounds like Joe Hart is set to get the nod to play in goal for Man City. Hart is a time bomb with Caballero breathing down his neck – I hope the players are instructed to get some shots and crosses on him, see how he responds. If Hart is pressured, he will make a mistake somewhere.

Well this is it, I just hope we fight to the final whistle, shame about de Jong. Hopefully we won’t get smashed 4-0, can see the fans turning quite quickly on pardew again if the performances don’t pick up from last season in the first couple of games.

    But anyway prediction? 1-0 cabella

Obertan has looked decent. Would probably play him away from home though. He would go back to his old self after the moans and groans of a home game.

I’d like to see Sissoko playing in the middle. Cabella, Ben Arfa, Aarons and Obertan should be utilised on the wings.

Ginola’s right about the French players. There’s too many. We need to sign players from other nationalities apart from Holland and France.

Obertan hasn’t done anything to make me think hes going to be decent this year.

In pre season he’s got stuck into tackles he’d normal not bother with and has made it harder for people to knock him off the ball.

Still runs with his head down and doesn’t release it, all he’s done is made himself into Gutierrez. It’ll take a lot more than pre season to convince me he should get another game.

I wouldn’t start Obertan. Only use him as a sub, maybe in away matches, against tiring legs he could be useful.

Siem was the key man today I fear. Like playing without Cabaye. Man c are so strong in midfield.

Even though we’ve spent money on quality and depth we still need that 15-20 goals a season man like remy last season. Whether reviere or ferrerya can be that man remains to be seen. If one of them steps up like Ba then we could be surprised. We still know little about them.

Cisse is a complete wildcard this season – which one will turn up? Will he get another run in the team?

Our defensive frailties are there for all to see, but we have signed the two Forrest lads so is MA gonna bring in another CB. doubtful.

I think it will be a very nervy first half and a better second with players getting used to the tempo of the EPL, especially against citeh pace and power.

    HWTL!!

Spuggy @ 16 – Given the undoubted talent of our new Midfield / Attacking options, I think Cisse will be as good as he was in his first season.

He should be fully fit when he returns, well rested and will get far better service than he got last season.

Being serious tho, if City’s forward line click they will rip the shit out of us.
Nice of fat boy to spend the £30M or so he got for flogging players but a shame we did not get a decent CB.
Still at least with the media ban we won’t have to listen to Pardews excuses.

Pards already said Siem won’t play, unless he’s planning to do another arfa white lie because Siem himself hinted he might play. I doubt it though.

So no santon, tiote or Siem of out starters. Big players. I think without a grenier it’s hard to see who will fill the no 10 role in a 4231, perhaps Cabella with goofy and sissoko out wide and Anita/colback holding? Or sissoko/colback holding with obertan out wide. It’s a shame HBA is out in the cold he could have slotted in today.

The City forward line does not scare me like it once did.

Aguero is made of glass, Dzeko is starting to resemble Bentdner, Jovetic has not proven anything yet and is probably a few tackles away from another injury and Negredo has been found out.

    Silva and Navas worry me.

All it takes is for Aguero/Silva/Toure/Navas/Nasri to turn and run at our defense after easily finding a pocket of space between out midfield and deep sat defense, and they will score. It’s beyond simple to break us down if we’re played against with pace and movement.
Some teams struggle to get a rhythm going against us and that’s when we nip and are effective.

It’s hilarious when Pardew comes out with comments like ” we always play on the front foot” when nothing could be further from the truth.

With pardew it’s all about ”containment” with 10 men behind the ball, largely camped in their own half for 70 mins and then hope to nick something.

The whole ethos is try not to lose, rather than go out to win.

    It’s basically Allardyce Mk 11

Now Pardew tells us to now expect a new attacking style. Given all his previous comments which have been largely wholesale and outright lies, do you believe him?

I think any competent manger would have identified Colo, Saylor and Willo as major weaknesses and addressed it in the summer.

Some great flair players brought in which is great and fantastic and definitely on the right lines but I can’t help thinking Cabella will end up getting the HBA / Marveaux treatment, as Pardew doesn’t really do technical players. I could be pleasantly surprised however.

My one great hope is Aarons and I just hope Pardew doesn’t cock that up too.

Funnily enough I think we will win today and every match when we kick off I always want us to win.

If it’s same old, same old, then my consolation is dreaming of a De Boer type appointment, as the potential is huge for the right man at SJP.

I would be surprised if Pardew selected Ferreyra as he recently said he wasn’t match fit for the Premiership.

Man City are very strong in the midfield and very dangerous on the attack so I expect Pardew to pack the midfield. It could be:

    Krul
    Janmaat – Williamson – Colo – Haidara

    Gouffran – Sissoko – Colback – Anita – Cabella

    Riviere

A 1-1 draw would be like 3 points. I bet Sir Bob would have said that.

I’ll bet we will be playing 4-5-1 (or 4-4-1-1 if you are the coach)

Never going to like this kind of football and if it has to be would like to see us go for a 4-1-4-1 with modern wide players (but that would mean the coach would have to emulate the great Wenger instead of Mourinho)
