The only real surprise in Alan Pardew’s selection today for the game against Manchester City is that local lad Paul Dummett gets the nod over Frenchman Massadio Haidara at left back, after Massadio had started most of the pre-season games.
And it looks like Newcastle are playing in their usual 4-2-3-1 formation today – one which Liverpool have started to use today in their games at home to Southampton.
Newcastle: Newcastle United (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Remy Cabella, Yoan Gouffran; Emmanuel Riviere
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Massadio Haidara, Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Gabriel Obertan, Rolando Aarons, Ayoze Perez
Manchester City (4-2-3-1): Joe Hart; Gael Clichy, Vincent Kompany (c), Martin Demichelis, Aleksandar Kolarov; Fernando, Yaya Toure; David Silva, Stevan Jovetic, Samir Nasr; Edin Dzeko
Substitutes: Willy Caballero, Dedryck Boyata, Pablo Zabaleta, Fernandinho, James Milner, Jesus Navas, Sergio Aguero
Referee: Martin Atkinson (Yorkshire)
And it’s good to see both Aarons and Perez on the bench – because both players can be a threat to opposing defenses, as they both showed in pre-season.
The two holding central midfielders will be Jack Colback and Vurnon Anita, and the middle three are Sissoko, Cabella and Gouffran – with Riviere up front.
It looks like the team we thought would start – but we had Haidara in for Dummett.
This is a debut game for new boys Janmaat, Colback, Cabella and Riviere and maybe for Perez and Aarons – if they get on in the second half.
We need to see an energetic and good performance from the lads today – and maybe we can even get something out of this game.
There will be a round of applause today in the 17th minute in honor of our fallen fans John Alder and Liam Sweeney, who lost their lives when Malaysian flight MH17 was shot down over Ukraine on 17th July, when they were on their way to support the lads in New Zealand.
And before the game tributes will also be paid to both John and Liam by both teams.
