Question is when will you stop for a coffee Ed? Not enough time between posts to start a decent conversation mate!

  • 2 Ethiotoon // Aug 19, 2014 at 9:52 AM

    Slow down mr Harrisson!

Should take the vote after Pards 10 game probation.

Which person in Norway picked bottom 3 ?
    Wishful thinking I see

  • 5 lesh // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:01 AM

    Tequila…..

Which person in Norway picked bottom 3? Now who could that be? Could it have been Pardew’s greatest fan?

C’mon Catchy, tell us why you’re so full of optimism.

    :)

  • 6 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:01 AM

The team has the Potential to finish top six, IF at least one of the 2 missing links is brought in this window.

If the club are indeed having a gamble that Cisse will return to form, with the new talent supplying him with the oportunities, then the defence needs to be reinforced to try and stop the consistant leakage of goals at the other end.

We need a strike force capable of scoring 60 goals a season to maintain a push for top 6; we also need a defence that can keep the Goals Conceeded down to respectable levels.

On that basis, I think we will finish in 12th place or above, but not in the top 6.

  • 10 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:09 AM

Wonder who the one vote for the bottom 3 is??

Well tw@er is buzzing this morning with news of us dispatching staff to both QPR and Lyon in attempt to thrash out some deals and also Benny and his reps were called in to a 2 hour meeting and he was politely informed “get your stuff your outta here”

  • 11 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:11 AM

TADS – sounds like another “normal” day at SJP then?? lol

  • 12 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:13 AM

    On the previous article
Colback has been a very pleasant surprise tbh very tidy little player with fantastic delivery from set pieces really busy player
Big question is who does Tiote come back in for?
Both Anita and Colback had great games and worked very well as a pairing
But future captain? Where did you pull that from Ed man!

  • 13 Jail for Ashley // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:15 AM

Catchy has got a lap top, phone, tablet and kindle fire and SUFC rule has just ventured out of his flea pit.

In the bottom half of the table, in my estimation. We have had new signings come in before, those were to stop the slide into relegation… these new signings are for the same purpose, as the side has been in relegation form for the last 22 games.

My prediction, 13th in the table.

  • 17 Jail for Ashley // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:19 AM

Can you imagine the feel good factor if we’d replaced STaylor with Dier, apparently as good at RB as CB, disappointing unless we did try andvhe chose Spurs.

  • 18 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:19 AM

    Fer and Vargas to QPR
Where the hell do they keep finding money and more importantly how the hell do they meet the leagues financial rules?

  • 19 beermonkey // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:20 AM

    tads

I would keep sissoko anita colback in that 3 again for the villa game we need the points

it seems to take tiote a few games to get back to his best after an injury we don’t rush him back into the team I would say start him at Gillingham and make him captain

  • 20 toonarmydownsouth // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:21 AM

    Graeme
Reckon he’ll replace Krul between the sticks!

  • 21 ROSHAN MAGPIE // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:21 AM

I’m sure we will draw our match against Aston villa and pardew will come out and say there were lots of positives and some of you will agree with that

  • 22 Jail for Ashley // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:22 AM

I think in between 8-12 th for the next six seasons, lessons were learned from the season we finished fifth so we won’t be seeing that again soon.

  • 25 Crawfordladd17 // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:27 AM

Top 8, only behind Chelsea, Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Man Utd, Tottenham, Everton but we could overtake Tottenham and Everton but unlikely. Don’t see how people think we will finish bottom half, really? Stoke who people think will come 8th but they are worse than us, who has Stoke bought? Bojan, Diouf and Moses they are all average, Sidwell is decent though and they have a smaller squad. we signed quality Cabella, De Jong, Rivière and Janmaat are quality and Colback is decent too, with Perez who has potential and Aarons coming though. I don’t think Ferreya will do anything. Then we are better than the newly promoted, West Brom, Aston Villa, Sunderland, Southampton, West Ham, Hull, Crystal Palace and Swansea (if they kept Michu then maybe not).

  • 26 catchy in norway // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:31 AM

    for the record

    I picked 11-17

and that is only because we have got very good players that will dig us out of holes,

I wont pick a top top manager, but I would say if Martinez had this squad, we would be top 6,,

I rate our squad better than man u’s

    stupid question time,,

goals change games, man c scored , david silva scored on 38 mins, should pardew have made a sub at half time?
he played containing football, up until 75 minutes before making an attacking sub that could make a difference.
surely changing the team earlier might have meant we could attack more and give us a fighting chance??

  • 27 mindshaft // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:31 AM

I voted top ten, so pretty much same as last season.
A lot of teams looked decent in first game, Southampton, Palace, Toon and were unlucky to lose so it depends on if they can carry that form through the rest of the season

  • 28 Vagabond of the Western World // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:34 AM

    @toonarmydownsouth

I think it’s just a season long loan deal mate.

Either way, there will be more Remy to Newcastle rumours between now and the end of the window as a result.

I also read there’d been a meeting set up for this weekend between ourselves and QPR.

So it’s more than likely we will have to hear shed loads of theories on what’s going down before the end of the window.

    HBA to QPR?
    Remy to NUFC?
    Swap deal?
    Taylor to QPR?
    Yaddad yadda yadda to NUFC?
    Saggy chops likes pokey-bum-w*nks?
Burgess Meredith was the best Penguin?
    Ferdinand’s favourite band is WHAM?
    Pardew looks like Joe 90?

  • 29 Jail for Ashley // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:36 AM

    Roshan,
A draw at Villa wouldn’t necessarily be a bad result.

  • 30 Rotonda heights // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:40 AM

    ed slow down man

    Stuart,

As much as I would liked to be proved wrong I just think AP is too set in his ways to bring the best out of the players we now have and have always had tbh.

I don’t know if AP or Allardyce will ever feel comfortable being asked or in Allardyce’s case ordered to play more attacking and entertaining football.

Defensive, containing, risk free football with 1 man on his own up top, not supported quickly enough, is so engrained in both their mentality that it’s going to take a huge leap and stretch to artificially do something which does not come naturally to you.

You will have different mindsets in all sports and I’m showing my age here but ie Geoff Boycott could take forever painfully compiling runs where as ”King Viv” Richards could regularly score at more than a run a ball even in test cricket and I know which one I preferred to watch.

If Pardew can totally alter his ethos and play offensive football on a regular basis, not just we are a goal down then it would be fantastic.

Saw glimpses of that on Sunday, maybe against weaker opposition if we attack from the off rather than wait to see what happens, who knows where it could take us.

  • 31 davetoon // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:43 AM

I saw a market last week with the top 7 from last year out and we were favourites to win and Stoke 2nd faves.
I think 8th spot is expected. Anything above id above expectations, anything below 10th should lead to a manager change

  • 32 Ancientcoptic // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:45 AM

    Newcastle 0-2 Man City
    Liverpool 2-1 Newcastle
    Newcastle 3-0 Cardiff
    Arsenal 3-0 Newcastle
    Newcastle 1-2 Swansea
    Stoke 1-0 Newcastle
    Newcastle 0-4 Man Utd
    Southampton 4-0 Newcastle
    Newcastle 0-3 Everton
Newcastle 1-0 Crystal Palace (Lucky Injury time goal)
    Fulham 1-0 Newcastle
    Hull 1-4 Newcastle
Newcastle 1-0 Aston Villa (Lucky Injury time goal)
    Newcastle 0-4 Tottenham
    Chelsea 3-0 Newcastle
    Newcastle 0-3 Sunderland
    Norwich 0-0 Newcastle
    West Ham 1-3 Newcastle
    Newcastle 0-2 Man City
    Newcastle 1-2 Cardiff
    West Brom 1-0 Newcastle
    Newcastle 0-1 Arsenal

5 wins in 22 games, 2 of those wins coming via injury time winning goals, which means we are lucky not to have 3 wins in 22…

Voting top 6 is just slightly optimistic.

Eric Dier was a massive miss for us.

Mind you could you ever imagine seeing a NUFC CB under pardew in the final third moving on to a through ball and coolly taking it round the keeper to score the winner. total football at it’s best. De Boer where are you now!!!

I thought Vargas and Vidal for awesome for chile in the WC, so on balance and that given remy has issues I’d say vargas

  • 37 optimistic prime // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:57 AM

    I fancy 10th 11th or 12th but can’t vote for that.
It should say better, worse or just the same.

How can any of us judge after 10 games?

Last year after 10 there’s was talk of Europe after 20 people where convinced of Europe!

Until the final whistle of the season no one can say were better or worse.

Unfortunately we have no choice but to suck it and see.

When Ozzy had us bottom of the league ready to drop again who thought KK would turn the club around in such amazing fashion or so quick.

Hope for better days as it’s all we can do and HOPE is something Ashley nor Pardew can take away!

  • 38 Markaccus // Aug 19, 2014 at 10:59 AM

Vargas. Remy can take a long expensive walk of a short, lucrative contracted pier, and swim off to some champions league club, since millions of them want him :D

  • 39 Slank // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:00 AM

I think we can finish in 6th but it will probably be 8th.

    1 – Man City
    2 – Chelsea
    3 – Arsenal
    4 – Liverpool
    5 – Everton
    6 – Man Utd
    7 – Spurs
    8 – Newcastle

I think there will be little in it between Everton, Man Utd, Spurs and ourselves.

  • 40 jimmysmith // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:02 AM

I think Pardew and the players genuinely believe they can finish in the eighth or higher. I think we can too and that we have a better group than we are given credit for outside of Newcastle.

  • 41 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:03 AM

Fer at QPR for a medical, Vargas has his tomorrow for a season long loan – SSN

  • 42 davetoon // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:04 AM

I guess if Man Utd don’t buy anyone else all season which is not likely then we should have a good chance to beat them again.

  • 43 Rotonda heights // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:06 AM

benny’s not going to get a game so I guess benny swapping for grenier / Lacazette
and Remy for Saylor would be great.

Can’t believe QPR have got vargas.

This team with a qualified manager- bottom 5 ,, sack pards appoint a manager qualified in team building- could be top 6 . 8 at worst . build this team up over a couple of years, coz lets be honest it dosnt matter how good players are , if the manager is not the same gear , the team will only be as good as their manager. Fergie- cloughie, wenger, all adopt the same philosophy, build a team up over the years , not just chuck 6 or 7 good players in all at the same time and ‘ think ‘ you are going to have a good team , your not, ok rodgers at liverpool has bought 7 players , but he hasnt chucked them in at the same time , and he already has ther nucleous of a good side there , so unlike pardew , he hasnt bought a team , hes strengthened it , get a replacement for suares and they will be champions soon. Pardew came here 4 years ago to take us to the next level. well, it dosnt take einstein to think , hang on a minute , whats happened, 4 years he has had to build a team good enough to at least compete in this league. 4 years with the backing of the 24th richest man in england ( its not all pardews fault)behind him. What we saw on sunday was 6 re 7 new players chucked in at the deep end ( not the players fault) WHAT HAPPENED TO THE 4 YEARS OF TEAM BUILDING? what we saw was a sham ( not the players fault) we saw the manager who was appointed 4 years ago to build a team chuck 7 players in and hope for the best, that was it . Thats not managing , anybody on this blog could go and buy 678 players stick a top on them and tell them to do their best, thats not managing. anyone on here could fall ,out with their best player, and make him play in the reserves and make him look a twat, clever eh, ? thats not managing, why not put his arm around him give him a cuddle tell him how important to the team he is.
Cabs couldnt get away quick enough, debucheys ears got 6 ins bigger when arsenal was mentioned, didnt take him 5 mins to pack his bags , remy ? wont come near the place. 3 good players gone , why? IMO, no future for the club , going nowhere , a manager with no vision, players want more than that. these new lads at the club, good players . but without a plan. After 4 years as manager pardew should never have needed to throw all those lads in . the team should have been already there , the team he has built up over the last 4 years . on sunday he produced something that didnt even resemble a team , something that afte 4 years should have been a lot lot better ( again not the lads fault) it wasnt – and never will be.

    pardew thinks that every year

he is amazed at the end when he looks at the table and see’s where we ended up,

he feels that we were unlucky. and that if the season was just 15 games longer, he could have caught them at the top

  • 48 Slank // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:15 AM

    davetoon @ 42

Man Utd just doesn’t look like a team that could compete with Man City, Chelsea and possibly Arsenal and Liverpool.

Sir Alex left Moyes with a team that was well past its best. A year later the situation hasn’t improved, moreover it’s arguable it is worse.

We shall see how good LvG really is as this may be his biggest test.

    Stuart,
The season he did do well there was zero investment to push on, and any player who has attracted a decent offer has been sold, there are better managers out there for sure but to blame him for us not signing anyone for a year and a half is just plain biased.

Was impressed with Cabella at the weekend as he always wanted the ball and looked dangerous . Didn’t come off every time, but because his name isn’t Hatem he gets away with it .

Imagine HBA & Cabella in the same team and tearing teams to shreds ? . It would be beautiful t watch, but Pardew’s ego is stopping it from ever happening .

    Still our best team IMO:

    —————————Krul——————————-

    –Janmaat——–Willo——–M’biwa——–Haidara–

    ————Sissoko———————–Tiote————-

    —HBA—————-De Jong—————-Cabella—

You’re right about QPR but they know that there’s nothing can be done to stop ‘em spending as though there’s no tomorrow.

Luverpool are in the same position and are likely to be brought to task under FFP next year – like QPR, after they’ve raked in cash from whichever competitions they play in. Then, they’ll get a slap, a squad sanction and a fine like Citeh and PSG.

But by then, they’ve got the money and job done!

Just a pity these clubs couldn’t have received a warning when the signs of contravention of FFP rules were there then punished when it was shown that the rules were breached.

As far a QPR’s concerned, it’ll be Rednapp’s bank-account holding dog that’s signing players, paying them pots up front then letting QPR sign them for free and on no wages

  • 63 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 19, 2014 at 11:58 AM

    Big Pappa –

Great team, only change I’d make is Sissoko for Colback. With Colback playing box to box ahead of Tiote. I like Sissoko but it’s difficult to fit him in at times.
That forward line looks excellent though. I’d love to see Ben Arfa and Cabella line up together.

  • 64 Geremi's Prosthetic Leg Fund // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:00 PM

Has Pardew EVER played what we as fans consider our best team? I think he did it once against Liverpool when we were already 3 or 4 down, as if it would miraculously work.

  • 65 Ancientcoptic // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:03 PM

QPR sold more than they bought when they went down to the Championship. Now they are back in the Premier League, they are spending to stay in the division, and rightfully so under their ambitious owner who wants to cement QPR as a Premier League side. Buying Caulker, Mutch and Fer does not make them the last of the big spenders.

  • 67 Whumpie // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:05 PM

My mind changed on this on the news breaking yesterday that Ashley is after a bigger chunk of Rangers. I mentioned my theory in a post ages ago – see 119 here: http://www.nufcblog.co.uk/2014/05/08/why-am-i-so-apathetic/
And I’ve banged on at Ian Wright about it on his radio show.
If Ashley buys a controlling interest in Rangers, it raises the problem of conflict of interest rules, which say you can’t have controlling influence over two clubs in the same competition.
If he’s after 20% of Rangers, that would make him the biggest shareholder, which means that NUFC and Rangers CANNOT both be in the CL.
That raises the question: which one of those two is easier to get into the CL year in, year out?
    Obvious, really.

That means not allowing NUFC above 6th in the PL.

So if, just hypothetically, we were looking like relegation contenders on Jan 1st, what to do?
Oh, yes – go out and buy six players. French, for instance.

Or – again hypothetically – if we were, say, 6th on Jan 1st; safe from relegation but in danger of hitting CL spots. What to do?
Oh, yes – sell our key player to sabotage the season.

    Sound familiar?

Shit, I hate being right. Fortunately it doesn’t happen all that often. :)

If Ashley does buy those shares, be afraid – very afraid – and just wait for January to kick our season and our club in the klunge yet again.

  • 68 Our Toon // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:05 PM

I think we should be looking at 8th as we have the 8th best squad. Anything less is an underachievement.

I keep reading that Perez shot was on target before the block, has anyone seen the replay from behind the…right next to the post the ball passes? His shot was going wide and the deflection took it closer to the goal!! Not having a dig but look at it again and tell me if I’m wrong.

  • 69 Mister Tuff // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:12 PM

whumpie – you theory about Mr Tubbs intentions – is not that new -but maybe very relevant.
To avoid the conflict rules for European competition it would be easier for Rangers to qualify and then for Mr Tubbs other team -us -not to qualify -by winning cups or getting a CL spot.
Us not winning cups -not getting a CL spot – sounds very very familiar – indeed those are our current ambitions.
Would not put anything past this bloke.

I think you could be wrong. I’ve seen it from behind the goal & the deflection looks like it could have took the spin off the ball which just missed the post by a whisker. That is my opinion only & really can’t say for sure either way but it was certainly a tremendous piece of defending.

  • 74 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 19, 2014 at 12:27 PM

for months I was heading for bottom 3 but when I saw the match against Man Sh!tty in my view they where lucky to get the 2 goals IMO.

so I voted for 7th through to 10th, our new players for me had a cracking game and look exciting.

we where against the best team in the premier league and they couldn’t cope with us especially in the second half.

2 things that concern me though

    1. will Pardew keep this same style every match? because we all should know that we only play like this against the bigger teams ( Manure, Man sh!tty, Arsenal, Chelsea ) and with these 4 clubs last season we had 2 results against Manure and Chelsea and where unlucky against Arsenal and Man Sh!tty.

    2. are we going back to basis and basically nose dive back to defending? but I guess we will never know until we play against Villa.

all in all though if we play against every team like we did against Man sh!tty I don’t see why we can’t hit the top 7 spot and as most will know about me I always look at the performance rather than the scores.

    Nut meg

It was class defending no doubt about it, but the ball was heading out, would young Perez have got enough swazz on the ball to shape it back in? Not sure really but some are making it sound like it was headed for the bottom corner when really it started well outside the far post.

well impressed with burnley yesterday….its gonna be a tight game against them.

    B&W Army

You have to remember mate that they had a LB playing at RB, 2 CB’s that hadn’t played a single minute since the world cup, no Negredo and a 40% fit Aguero. Yeah we were decent but Dzeko should have scored in the first half when put through….he had a tame shot straight at Krul. My verdict is plenty of running but no end product…We rushed things in the final third and we didn’t have enough options ahead of the midfielders. Young Perez showed more composure than Riviere, plenty of sideways passing by us but very little created against 2 CB’S that haven’t kicked a ball for 4 weeks.

I would have Perez on the left and Cabella on the right switching positions against Villa with either Sissoko or SDJ ( if fit ) in the middle.

this will cause major problems for Villa and IMO we could have a good score line maybe 3,4,5 goals for us but whether Pardew will utilize this is another question

We have a good enough squad right now to hit about 8th.

If we sign a striker or a CB that could go to 6th.

Sign both and we’re a match for most teams – including those in the CL who have to rotate squads.

    Krul
    Janmaat, willo, Colo, Haidara
    Sissoko, Colback
    Cabella, De jong, Riviere
    Cisse

For me i don’t think Gouffran starting brings much to the side, hes better to bring off the bench when defending a league!

  • 96 Black and White with an army lol // Aug 19, 2014 at 1:02 PM

nearly every manager around the world base the players incoming from a 4-4-2 formation, this doesn’t mean that they play a 4-4-2 formation itself but it’s the perfect way to build a good rotation of players for every position for example

    GK x2
    RB x 2
    LB x2
    CB x 4
    RM/W x2
    LM/W x2
    CM x4
    ST x4

most teams have this principle and will keep to it, even when teams play with DM or AMC they look at the CM and ST that can play in these roles

We do not have any world class players fact!

We have a mix of decent championship and average prem players, in truth thats all we can expect unless we start spending the sort of cash Chelski, Citeh, Manure, Bindippers etc spend.
Afraid class costs a lot more money than we are prepared to spend and talk of top 4 is delusional.

8th to 12th is what we can expect which is probably our average position over the prem league history -we’ve always been sh!te bar a couple of SBR and KK years, not sure why people suddenly think we should be challenging top four! we gave man city a game thats all, palace gave arse a game … so what 0 points each

For those saying it didn’t matter they are world class players, these lads haven’t kicked a ball for 4 weeks, makes a huge difference, these players returned from holiday 2 weeks ago…They had 2 weeks of training after chilling on a beach.

We had a fully fit squad and they didn’t in my eyes that does make a difference, if you feel it doesn’t then surely tiredness is a bogus excuse then for performances 2 seasons ago.

Any player will tell you that it’s important to get a really good pre season, lack of fitness affects touch, passing, speed of thought, stamina etc.

cabella: too me was a bit of a show pony. a lot of promise but then also a lot of theatrics, created a bit and also lost the ball quite a bit…very interesting to see which direction its going to go! an upgrade on ben10 im not sure.
He could be a massive player for us

Riviere: didnt know what to expect from him really but he showed some really good strength and determination but lacked in composure at times….i reckon he will be a hit though if he can sort his feet out.

janmart: looked really good at times but also a bit sloppy in positioning…will get better im certain

Colback: never rated him…..thought he was just a work horse but i must admit i was very impressed with him….in my view he was our best player together with sissoko

2.the atmosphere at the home games
    3. the january transfer window
    4. most importantly the seriousness of the injuries that our defenders and forwards get because something tells me that it’s the price of forwards that stops us from getting them signed and as for CB well god knows.

  • 176 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:43 PM

I was reading some comments on here yesterday and read one (I think it was from Jesper) that I think encompasses a lot of the issues that some of us have with the negative fans.

He wrote something along the lines of “This isn’t the club that I started to love in the early 90s.”

Well, assuming he means he fell in love with the club when we were awash with SJH’s money, had a fantastic attacking squad and had a maverick manager at the helm in KK, I think that’s no great surprise really…

It’s a bit like falling in love with a woman when she’s a 21 year old stunner and then complaining when she’s 40 and things are a little droopy…things change!

I started to support Newcastle United when Keegan went along in the old 2nd division and admittedly truly fell in love with the club the following season. But I’d be a fool if I expected things to always be as good. Leeds, Blackburn, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Sheffield Wednesday, Nottingham Forest have recently all had relative glory periods compared to where they are now.

NUFC is a wonderful club but if you expect an owner to be as charming or as forthcoming as SJH, if you expect a team to be as exciting as the entertainers or if you expect a manager to be as attacking and passionate as KK, then you’re setting yourself up for a fall…and all you’re going to do is keep coming on here and complaining…which is a shame, because there are thousands and thousands of us who love this club, even when things aren’t perfect.

  • 177 Markaccus // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:44 PM

  • 178 Our Toon // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:44 PM

Tim Krul isn’t even in the top 5 keepers for the prem.

Keepers that are better than him and in no particular order:

    De Gea
    Coutouis
    Cech
    Hart
    Lloris
    Howard
    Mignolet
    McGregor

In my opinion all these are better than Tim Krul

  • 185 89Norcal // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:55 PM

    @ToonDarnSarf
It’s probably the most frustrating aspect of having passionate fans. I had David Pleat on my feed, and he actually hit it on the head about us. There was a Newcastle player (can’t remember which) who wasted a chance in one of his first games for us, and our fanbase had decided then and there that he was useless. Course he went on to have a solid career elsewhere.

In other words, our fans tend to jump to conclusions..

  • 186 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:57 PM

Hey, I’d rather see fans be a bit extreme in bigging up our players rather than slagging them off I have to say. Krul is a fantastic goalkeeper that’s for sure.

But the thing about NUFC is that we don’t have any real stars at the moment. We haven’t bought any of our players for £20M and we’re not paying anyone loads more than anyone else. Many of our players look to have the potential to play for a top 4 PL team but the only ones obviously good enough (Cabaye, Debuchy, Remy) have already gone. Time for this lot to prove themselves…

    I like it that way!

  • 187 Our Toon // Aug 19, 2014 at 3:58 PM

De Gea was a liability when he signed in his first season but since then he’s been class for them. Still a little suspect from crosses but a better shot stopper and better distribution than Krul

When Krul first came on the scene away to Palermo I thought this lad is gonna be a world beater but he hasn’t really progressed and it could be argued that Forster is now ahead of him.

I think that’s a symptom of not having won something for so long. We’re impatient! We also have such high expectations of our players that we often put them on a pedestal and then slam them when they don’t live up to inflated expectations.

Same thing with England too. Shearer, Owen, Beckham, Gerrard, Lampard, all absolutely slated by some England fans. They were our best players at the time! But impatient fans are so desperate for these top players to perform at the peak of their ability every time that they go mental when they don’t.

Wonder if it’s a mostly British thing too? Wonder if other countries have a relatively big club who has inexplicably gone decades without a trophy…

I’d rather we don’t big players up and judge them for what they are, Krul is decent but I’m not gonna say he’s world class because he plays for us….that’s just being deluded.

Norcal – 2 sides to every tale mate, I remember a certain Alex Math ie scoring a blinder….might have been against Sheffield Wednesday, the fans and KK over hyped him, keegan said he was a gem that he found on his doorstep and the fans were comparing him to some of he best strikers in the league. We all know how that ended don’t we!!

Its a pity we dont have commanding centre hales ( although neither are poor players ) but hey ho. Great effort from the team the other day as i fully expected given the deaths of the two great supporters ( RIP lads, i hope they play Keegan Years type of dvd permanentky in heaven ! ) . Agree with what you say re the club. I have supported NUFC since around Supermac or just after. And believe me there were very few of us around in Limerick – only one that i knew – who remains as passionate as I do. NUFC is not all about Keegan and those years, but about so much more – and most of it crap. Yeah I think old Bradley is still better than wor timmy…I look at the goals conceded on the weekend and think Brad would have saved both, Brad used to say that is important for a keeper to come off his line and spread himself, the biggest sin though is letting the ball through your legs whilst spreading yourself. Tim is a serial flapper who pulls off a decent save from time to time but doesn’t really command his area or communicate with his fellow defenders very well

  • 194 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:08 PM

    TDS @ 186

The problem arises when “this lot” do start to “Prove themselves”
At that point, an ambitious club, would reinforce the weaker areas to make the squad stronger, to sustain and improve the playing staff.

At NUFC we SELL our best players, as soon as a half decent offer comes in, which weakens and demoralises the rest of the squad. We then wait, sometimes over a year, before that player is replaced, usually by selling yet another of our better players.

There is no plan, there is no “Future” for the club to progress, it doesn’t even seem to be on the agenda at NUFC. THAT is the biggest problem the club faces.

ToonDarnSaarth @176 – that pretty much nails it for me. Catchy says things like “SBR came in, we won our first game 8-0,, that’s what a good manager can do by setting up the team right”.

Not only is that incorrect (we lost to Chelsea) but it just shows what unrealistic comparisons are going on here. “Good manager”?? How about “Total on-off genius, local legend of a manager with never-seen-before-or-since man-management skills, unbelievable passion for the club and a huge pot of money to spend on a squad”?

If anyone is waiting for another SBR, you are in for a long wait. It’ll probably not happen this century. Get used to it or find another sport to follow.

If you look at the league history of this club, with its average finishing position of 9th in the past 20 years, you do have to ask: for how much of his life has Catchy spent being happy?

Hey there. I disappeared from the blog for quite a while mate. I’ll disappear again when the numbskulls come on later and the direct insults start flying…I just can’t be bothered…

Totally agree with your post too. I was chatting to an Arsenal fan last year and he was saying how they were desperate to win something after 8 year. He asked me who I supported, when I answered him he just said “Ah.”! :-)

I lived in Selby, Wolverhampton, London, Spain and Nottingham supporting NUFC before I finally took a job in Newcastle itself and was no longer in the extreme minority! It is a bit of a badge of honour for us non-Geordies who support a club for reasons other than glory hunting.

As for the centre halves…I agree. They’re both decent but would be great to have a Colo from 3/4 years ago in there. And the next 2 have not proven themselves good enough to play in the PL.

DokToon – that’s an interesting point. In theUSA they do seem to like games where there’s a constant stream of fairly low-level excitement.

The football world (which, as far as I can make out, is the rest of it) prefers that anticipation of a rare, game-changing moment that gets us on our feet and spilling our bovril.

I’ve been to basketball, baseball (rounders?) and american football matches, and the latter has a bit of that but not much.

Ice hockey is the exception and much more similar to footie in its emotional profile. It’s also the only one I’d bother with again.

I don’t really agree with you there you see. If you look at our squad now compared to 2/3 years ago, it’s actually more complete. We have more first team players who can challenge for spots rather than relying on unproven teenagers like Fergie, Tav, Sammy and Campbell as we were back then.

With the massive gap to the top 5 (in terms of squad quality, revenue and wage bill), the only way we can close the gap is to be very professional and close it bit by bit so we can at least have a nibble at the CL places in future.

When players get to their late 20s, then want one big move to a top club. If they get offered it, who are we to stop them? Can you imagine the amount of money we would have to spend to have convinced Cabaye and Debuchy that we were going to make a real push for the CL places? In fact, we’d have to spend so much, we would fall foul of the FFP and (not being a huge club), we’d be banned from it in favour of another club…one of the hugely rich ones…

There’s really no way around it. But as long as we’re not letting them go cheaply and we’re replacing them properly, I can understand it. Like you say, the replacing bit was the problem in previous windows but we seem to have nailed it this time.

    TDS @ 176

‘..He wrote something along the lines of “This isn’t the club that I started to love in the early 90s.”…’

This isn’t the club that I started with in the 1960s.

Then the ground was an absolute dump. It was run by toffee nosed toffs who never spent anything on the club and its fans. After the great (possibly the greatest manager Newcastle has ever had) Joe Harvey went we had period in the depths with one totally useless manager after anothet and even more totally useless players. It was only when Sir John wrestled control of the club that it started to look upwards and onwards and by and large it has continued.

Today the stadium is magnificent. The facilities for players and fans are fantastic. The scouting network is the envy of many of our rivals. The club is financially secure and has avoided a Leeds / Portsmouth spiral downwards. There are some wonderful players and the team can play some wonderful football at times. The club can compete with the best but realistically we may not be able to qualify for the Champions League even if we had a fantastically rich owner as, contrary to what many fans think, UEFA Financial Fair Play Regulations are being observed and are preventing the unchecked spending seen in previous years by Chelsea and Man City. But we should be able to give both cups our full attention as we aren’t going to be relegated. This I believe is what the fans want.

We are a big club but not a successful club. Our trophy room is bare and has been for far too long. But we must face reality. We are unlikely to get a world renowned manager with a glittering track record of success. They go to trophy winning top clubs. We cannot choose our next owner. Our club will be bought and sold and almost certainly owned by the type of people, like our current owner, who are not from the North East and not life long Newcastle supporters. They will be very wealthy and their motives for owning the club may not be the same as the fans.

Yes, the club is not what it was and thank god for that. It is now something we should be proud of and support. Yes have a moan but keep it into perspective.

    Here ends my moan.

US sport is very different. The draft system means that most teams only get to dominate for a few years and then it’s someone else’s turn when they get lucky with a great coach or players. Obviously some seem to have a bit more money or pull, and some less so, but I don’t think there have been clubs with a sustained period of dominance like Man Utd’s have there?

I think some fans were pulled into supporting NUFC when SJH and KK were there and they almost feel cheated…

Darnsarf, I think all of us would take a poor league campaign if we could win the FA Cup. Its absolutely vital for the morale of the club as a whole that we put out teams to win games in the cup competitions and I cant tolerate any arguments to the contrary, especially with a slightly deeper squad now. Gotta say, Colback looks like one hell of a player for a free. But I suppose Rotunda will come on now and say Pardew will ruin him! Just like he ruined Cabaye, Debuchy etc

  • 227 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:38 PM

TDS @ 209 – But that method creates even more problems than it resolves.

I would agree with you, if there was some form of “programme” in place so that as players reached your “pinacle” their replacement was already in the club, was familiar with the clubs “stratergy” of how they want the team to play. Unfortunately, there is NO stratergy and it is very obvious.

As P45DUE said yesterday, we are going to need 10 games to get the new players settled and into the swing of Premier League Football. WHY??

If we were professional, we would be recruiting 2 or 3 players every year to maintain cohesion and progression as a Football Club. Instead, we buy nobody, for 3 windows and now we have had to recruit almost a brand new team, which could so easily have been avoided in the first place.

At the moment, we operate on a wing and a prayer – we gamble to save money.

NUFC would now appear to exist solely as an advertising board for SD, the football side of things is completely of secondary importance.

@Whumpie, trust me I’ve tried to tolerate him but he is as slanted as the fans he’s criticizing. And the whole angle of the “pardew out brigade” was that they were the ones with their eyes open. Their disdain for him though has tarnished that one!

    @TDS
Yes I guess it’s a plus with the draft. Unless your owner squanders every high ranking draft pick. I know that pain too!

The closest to MUFC’s dominance in American sports is probably the Boston Celtics, from the late 50’s to the mid 70’s they were THE team. I don’t think the Yankee’s even rivaled that.

Anyways gotta run to work, good to talk with you all again. Stay positive for Villa :)

Thats what bothers me about the draft system… having first pick but then not being able to offer a good enough contract. Also, the player can still refuse to join? I dont fully understand the system, but if a player wants to join the detroit amazings, he can refuse the seatle waste-of-spaces even if they have first pick.?

    TDSarf,
There you go again dealing in presumption while slating other people for twisting facts, at the time we got SBR we were capable of attracting high profile managers but the people in charge made a terrible job of choosing them, and as a one club city with the fan base we’ve got we should be aiming for top six, maybe it’s you who should expect a bit more from us rather than spouting your drivel and trying to convince people we don’t deserve to be more than a mid table club.

  • 231 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:40 PM

    Slank

Love it. Your post made me smile! A proud NUFC fan who acknowledges the things that aren’t right with our club but loves the club for the many things that are.

I’m hoping we can go for a cup too, but sadly that’s the modern PL…no club is putting out their first choice teams in the early rounds of the cups these days, the money is just too big in terms of staying in the league or CL qualification. But presuming we can get to a QF and we’re not in danger of relegation or in with a realistic chance of CL qualification, I hope we give them a damn good go! Even if we are, I’d take a cup win over finishing 4th one season…

  • 232 Whumpie // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:41 PM

Slank – I agree with your moan… mostly. There is much to be pleased with, especially when compared to past times.

The club does have all that stuff going for it – stadium, facilities, finances, etc.

The killer blow, though, which makes all that so painfully irrelevant – is that as things stand, this is a football club that has openly stated that it’s not trying to win anything.

    That’s quite a statement. That’s a bit.. um… chocolate kettle. A bit car-with-no-wheels. A bit… Nick Klegg.

I’d be happy go back to shite concrete terraces, no roof and undrinkable coffee if it meant that I could turn up to any match confident that the club was determined to win whatever competition it was playing in that day.

    Without that, what’s the point?

So – if the club DO declare that they’re going for it in the cups, things will be looking up significantly.

Then, if we get past January with our squad intact and a decent shot at a European place, we will have reason to believe things really have changed.

    Hey, it could happen…

  • 233 Jail for Ashley // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:41 PM

Munster, if you’ve heard his response to why it’s not beneficial to win a cup then you might want to reconsider that.

If Krul was a world class keeper he would have played more than 1 min in world cup and he wouldn’t be at the toon ( we always sell anyone with potential to be world class)

I’ve been going to toon since Nattrass, Wyn Davies, Jinky Jimmy, Tommy Cassidy, Willie McFaul, Ron Guthrie years so can remember a lot worse times than this, those who started in the KK years were just lucky – prior to that we were completely useless and a lot worse than the current team

Fans would yes. It would just be great to get that monkey off our backs!

But simply, no owner in the PL would risk it in the early rounds. Imagine a club was relegated by a point or missed the CL by a point and they had lost a top player for several games after being injured/suspended in a cup game…

I think we’ll continue to rotate, especially the players who have slight knocks or other fitness issues. But we also have a lot of young and hungry players who will be desperate to push their way into the first choice starting 11. It’s about time the learned to prove themselves in the cups to force the issue!

Colback does look decent. Early days but it’s great to have a solid player in the squad who we know will put in 100% every game and is not going to throw a strop!

  • 237 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:48 PM

    Graeme

Players don’t join non-CL clubs to be groomed as the successor to an existing player. We’re not Chelski or City where we can attract a player with big wages, play them in easy CL or cup games and possibly loan them out to another PL team or a CL club abroad.

What we need to do is have several players lined up to replace each of our top players. Then we need to have them signed up BEFORE we agree to our player going. Just like we did with Debuchy.

The 2/3 players we should be bringing in for planning are the likes of the Forest boys. We needed a pretty complete squad to start doing that though and I’m really hoping we can do it from now on!

  • 238 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:51 PM

    Markaccus

I think if you have the first draft but don’t want to sign the player (for whatever reason), then you can trade him for other players, cash or other picks. With the bottom club getting that first draft, a wise owner can work wonders with it!

  • 240 Whumpie // Aug 19, 2014 at 4:53 PM

I don’t really get this assertion that the size of our fan base reflects on what is an acceptable league position. How does that work? By that logic Leeds would be up here with us but Burnley and QPR would be in League 2.

We’ve NEVER been consistenly in the top 6; we’ve just had little spurts of two or three years when the right ingredients combine – never sustainably – to kick us up there. It’s usually taken a miraculous manager and an owner prepared to lose lots of money. (Or let the club do so.)

All we can hope is that Ashley has been playing a long game, and that now the FFP rules are biting, he will consider a continuous push up to the CL spots. But if he’s buying more of Rangers, that looks very unlikely.

  • 243 ToonDarnSarf // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:00 PM

    Whumpie

On the cup thing…and I don’t want to get in a slanging match with ANYONE about this…

If you listen to what some fans say, then our club doesn’t want to win a cup. But if you listen to what the club actually said, then they just said that the focus would be on the league. This is just the same as every single PL club. As I mentioned above, the money for CL qualification and PL survival is so big, that an owner simply won’t risk failing one of those targets to go for the lottery of a cup competition.

Of course I know that’s not what the fans want to hear…but it is what all the clubs are saying and doing.

Have a look at the teams we put out last year. There were still 5/6 regular first team starters in there. Look at the teams other PL clubs put out…similar. In fact some clubs put out complete reserve/youth teams (I think West Ham got battered by Forest when doing that?)

I understand the need for rotation and we should easily beat the likes of Gillingham while resting 5/6 of our regular players. What I would demand is if we get to the QF of a cup, then we really do focus on the next 3 games to win a damn trophy!

Carroll was a freak thing because it was right at the end of the window and the money was too good to turn down. He was then injured for most of the rest of the season so it could hardly be argued we made a bad deal…

But yes, we screwed up badly with Ba and Cabaye leaving and not having a replacement lined up. We knew the Ba thing was possible due to his release clause and we had months to prepare for Cabaye leaving too. But this summer we appear to have done the right thing. I’d like a couple more players in, but then I’d always like another top player to come to NUFC! :-)

  • 245 Belfast // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:02 PM

Though a few injuries could see us finishing lower.

Sign a striker and a center back, and we could finish higher.

Maybe with JFK off the seen we maybe more organised in the transfer market. Its just a pity when MA does decides to spend he will only have resale in mind, at least in most cases, which is good business financially but two key areas he’s taking a gamble on by not getting proven striker and CB in.
But at least we certainly look stronger than we did.

  • 248 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:05 PM

TDS – sorry, dont know what happened to the rest of that!!

We knew months in advance that Cabaye was leaving but did absolutely nothing about it, until the last week of the window, when we put in a stupid bid for Grenier, which was laughed at. Cabaye has still not been replaced, yet BenArfa’s replacement is already here in Cabella.

Where is the logic? Where is the consistancy to let the club thrive and develop?

it might be understandable in the early rounds of the league cup but when it’s the FA cup there is absolutely no reason he should field a weakened team.

if you want proof well here is proof
    1. we finished in 5th place and managed to get ourselved into a european spot, now that itself is great and yes i would love to have european football but when i see a following summer transfer window bring only 1 player in yet a winter transfer window see lots come in that tells me he is not bother at all about european football. if that is not enough then also you can say last winter we sell one player yet no one arrived permanently for a whole season.

so you must be joking thinking when saying it’s because we aiming for europe.

that leave risk of relegation as the only reason.

the europa league season we were in a relegation battle so it’s understandable, however last year we were in a very good position and at first i thought we were challenging for europe but the we saw an awful run from christmas time onwards, what i also noticed was we still finished in the top half of the table, so that proves we can field our best team in the FA cup without having to worry about relegation as long as we are in good position to start with.

    in other words.

if we sitting in the top 8 then ashley either starts to make the team more suitable for european football or we start fielding a full strength team in that FA cup.

Yeah…well that’s how Mike Ashley operates. He does the same with all of his businesses.

The Halls and Shepherds made millions from NUFC and at least we don’t have an owner who truly messes us up like Leeds, Pompey or Blackburn.

Let Mike Ashley look after the money side of things I say. As long as we’ve got players on the pitch who are trying their hardest in the black and white, then we’ve got something to cheer about. And at least now we seem to have a complete squad that should comfortably be in the top 10 and hopefully push higher.

You honestly believe we ha e the 10th /11th best squad in the league? Especially with the hype around the signings and considering we finished 10th last year I’d have thought 8th is a minimum requirement unless we are now going backwards after most consider this to be the “best window” in years and the strongest team of MA reign

personally I think it’s been an average window and noting less than 8th is acceptable.

Like I said, there’s no doubt there was a screw up in terms of Cabaye and Ba leaving.

We don’t need to have like for like replacements all the time. Colback seems to be taking over some Cabaye roles and Cabella others. Don’t forget, HBA barely played for us last season.

Every club makes mistakes. I just don’t understand why some NUFC fans seem desperate to hammer our club for ours. Especially after a decent transfer window!

Chelsea would have won the league last year if they had a striker like Costa, Man Utd. have made some terrible signings in recent windows, City got a little lucky without a top class centre half other than Kompany and Arsenal again didn’t have the strength in depth to cope in the 2nd half of the season. Then we have Spurs who appear to have wasted the Bale money…

There’s always something that could be better. But right now things are looking alright aren’t they?

  • 256 Graeme // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:14 PM

Toonking – being in the Europa League does absolutely NOTHING for Mr Ashley, in fact it will probably cost him.

IF we qualify for Europe, ALL Perimiter and Stadium Advertising HAS to be removed or covered up. The advertising rights for these games are held by EUFA for their sponsors alone.

If it would greatly increase exposure for SD, you could bet your last pound that we would be trying to qualify!!

  • 257 Mister Tuff // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:15 PM

Having to buy a whole load of players in one go -is terrible management of the club. whichever side of the divide you are on -letting the quality numbers of players recede to dangerous levels shows some degree of incompetence. Has to be Mr Tubbs who is mainly at fault for allowing this to happen in the first place.
I had previously voiced concern as to whether Percy would have enough time to get everyone up to speed – he’s now suggesting 10 weeks.
Our CB’s are going to be a big problem -we should have gone flat out to get these positions upgraded – I mean we’ve had this problem for a couple of years now -from prior to us chasing Douglas – so it is not a new problem.

  • 258 Our Toon // Aug 19, 2014 at 5:18 PM

I think you are being disingenuous when making comparisons of we could have ended up like Leeds, Blackburn or Pompey.

Let’s face it Pompey were buying players for ridiculous fees and putting them on daft wages, they had very little money coming in and small attendances. Leeds spent to big to soon but with the kind of parachute payments made to clubs now it stops a Leeds utd from happening….They bought the likes of Rio etc for silly fees but more importantly they could have recovered if they had got promoted at the first attempt….We would be in leeds place now if Houghton hadn’t got us promoted at the 1st attempt.

Blackburn got stung by the poultry crew who have done what MA has done and again relegation is why they don’t spend much, again if we hadn’t of got promoted at the 1st attempt that would be us now!!

Our current players that are currently good enough are
Krul Elliot Janmatt R.Taylor Coloccini Williamson Santon(as a right winger) Tiote Anita Colback Gourffan Sissoko Cabella HBA(not wanted) De Jong Riviere

    Our players that have potential
Woodman Yanga-M’Bwia Good Satka Streete Haidara Dummett Aarons Sammy Ameobi Kemen Bigirimana Abeid Vuckic Armstrong Perez Ferreyra Campbell
Yes half of them won’t play but half of them will and if they can improve then we have a solid squad (eg Yanga-M’Bwia, Haidara, Dummett, Aarons, Perez)

The players that are pretty crap but if worse comes to worse
    S.Taylor Obertan Cisse
