There is news today in Russian daily newspaper Izvestia that Lokomotiv Moscow are very close to signing Newcastle’s defensive midfielder Cheick Tiote, who has also been linked this summer with a move to Arsenal.
Cheick Tiote – in action last season
Lokomotiv are after a defensive midfielder to replace Lassana Diarra, because the former Arsenal, Portsmouth and Real Madrid player wants to leave the Russian club in the summer transfer window.
There have also been other Russian clubs said to be after Tiote, who has been at Newcastle United for four years now.
Lokomotiv are supposed to be in advanced talks with Newcastle to sign the 28 year-old, but the transfer fee quoted of £8M seems too low to allow Tiote to leave the Tyneside club.
It could be that the good form of Jack Colback and to a lesser extent Vurnon Anita in pre-season, has persuaded the powers that be at Newcastle that they can now cash in on their Ivory Coast International, who we signed for £3.5M from FC Twente four years ago.
While we think Cheick would move to Arsenal if the clubs agreed on a fee, it’s another thing to move to Russia, and in the past Cheick seems to have been happy enough at Newcastle, although there have been rumblings coming from his representatives that Cheick wants to leave Newcastle this summer.
The Izvestia report suggests a fee has already been agreed between Newcastle and Lokomotiv, and if that’s true we hope it’s for more than £8M.
Only yesterday there was news that Arsenal were making a final offer of £8M to Newcastle for Cheick, and we hope Newcastle turned down that offer.
We would like to see Cheick staying at Newcastle for this season, and if he moves, then Newcastle need to replace him, but given there’s not that much time left in the summer transfer window, that’s not at all certain.

We’ve made a late bid for Rojo. He’s on his way to Newcastle for talks.

Aye, Weah was class. Turning his hand to politics over in Liberia now. I’d go along with that. When I have discussed it with African football journos it is invariably between him, Eto’o, Drogba and Abedi Pele. Although, if you were going to be pedantic about it technically that honour is probably Eusebio’s as he was African, but then became a naturalised Portuguese.

Comment #9Sell Tiote for £12m and sign Grenier for £9m. Grab Alderweireld on loan and then sign a top class striker.

Give the fat man a ring then!
I wouldn’t sell Tiote but if he has to go I’d want £10-12 million, 8 is a bit low IMO

Alex Mathie’s pal Malcom Allen you mean? The pair of them scored a fantastic volley each and did very little otherwise. Both worth the limited amount we spent on them for those moments alone!

Some player George Weah was, didn’t keegan try to sign him when he wanted to leave PSG, was between us and AC Milan. That would have been something.
Didn’t realise he went into politics, seemed like a nice bloke as well….Eusebio what a player he was, if we are being pedantic then he is above them all.

Comment #21Malcolm Allen mainly scored penalties in the 93/94 season while Beardsley was out with a dodgy cheekbone. In the same game that he scored a cracking volley (against QPR at home) he took a last minute penalty but missed…he always used to aim for the keeper’s left and the same thing happened there. We ended up losing 2-1 and I don’t think he ever scored for us again.
Mike Hooper was a hilariously poor goalkeeper. He works as a doorman in Durham now doesn’t he? My mate, who’s a mackem, spoke to him one night and he thought my mate was going to give him aggro, but he just shook his hand and said “well done”….cheeky sod 😀

Comment #23Lilongwe @ 13 – You’re right – Mathie was a limited player who tried his best at the time but disagree about Malcolm Allen. The lad had a decent time at Newcastle, always worked hard and scored some good goals.
Have seen many worse in my sixty years of watching the Toon, in fact too many to mention.

Even though your probably right, you can’t imagine us paying 16million for anyone can you?
I’d argue the only time Ashley would spend that’s sort of money would be if he got Messi in a dodgy deal and knew he get five times that amount in six months.
Even though it would come out the clubs coffers there still in a dark corner if Ashley’s pocket.
