Alan Pardew has named an unchanged team for the game at Villa Park today, but Siem de Jong is on the bench and could make his competitive debut for the club today.
Alan Pardew is keeping with the 4-2-3-1 formation he used last week, in the 2-0 defeat at home by Manchester City.
Teams:
Aston Villa: (4-2-3-1): Brad Guzan; Alan Hutton, Ron Vlaar, Philippe Senderos, Aly Cissokho; Fabian Delph, Ashley Westwood; Andreas Weimann, Kieran Richardson, Charles N’Zogbia; Gabby Agbonlahor
Substitutes: Shay Given, Nathan Baker, Leandro Bacuna, Joe Cole, Carlos Sanchez, Jack Grealish, Darren Bent
Newcastle: (4-2-3-1): Tim Krul; Daryl Janmaat, Mike Williamson, Fabricio Coloccini (c), Paul Dummett; Vurnon Anita, Jack Colback; Moussa Sissoko, Remy Cabella, Yoan Gouffran; Emmanuel Riviere
Substitutes: Rob Elliot, Massadio Haidara, Steven Taylor, Mehdi Abeid, Gabriel Obertan, Siem de Jong, Ayoze Perez
Referee: Mike Dean (Wirral)
The bench is strong and Ayoze Perez and Gabby Obertan, who did well in the second half last Sunday against City keep their places, but it’s unfortunate that Aarons has lost his place.
For Aston Villa former winger Charles N’Zogbia starts and Shay Given is on the bench.
This is what Alan Pardew said earlier this week about the game at Villa, and about manager Paul Lambert and new assistant manager Roy Keane:
“Roy is a good football person and a good person to have in the dressing room, but I also think Paul Lambert is a great manager.”
“It strengthens his hands to have good people around him, as John is for me.”“I am looking forward to testing the technical game we are going to have.” “We face a Villa side which has just picked up an away win and in the Premier League.”
“That is gold-dust, so they will be feeling fairly confident to turn us over at home and we have to make sure we are a really stiff opposition.” “They have good players – they still carry great players, Aston Villa, and it will be a difficult game.”
“We had our best stats against City since I have been manager in terms of passing and possession and a foothold in the game, but expect us to have a little bit more against Aston Villa.”
“Therefore, particularly Cabella should see more of the ball and make more moments happen.” “He is an exciting player. “He plays with a smile on his face, we have enjoyed his company so far.”
“Villa Park is somewhere where we have played well and we have proved we can win there.”
It will be a tough game today at Villa Park, but we should get some idea of just how good our new players are – we’re hoping for all 3 points today.

Comment #3Why do we always have a LB on the bench?
Anyways gutted to see Aarons dropped, this is exactly the kind of game you want to see him get a run in

Comment #5We have to show far more ambition today than what we did against City as Riviere was isolated for the entire game, Pardew has to set us up to go for the win, to impose our game on Villa and not simply try to contain and nick a point. We have the players to win but need to manager to set us up to go for the win

Comment #8Surprised Aarons isn’t on the bench, much better option than Obertan. Imagine Aarons and Ferrerya will start in the cup game then.

Comment #18Understand playing the same team as they played so well against City.
Sensible to have De Jong on the bench as he hasn’t played for awhile now.
Don’t see why we need two defenders on the bench. Only need Saylor on the bench as Colback and Anita can each cover left back and right back respectively with Sissoko moving into the middle.

What can possibly be the reasoning for choosing Obertan over Aarons??????????? Give youth the chance, not someone who has failed to deliver in his whole career, exactly what are we expecting to suddenly change for Obertan now???? He will not improve again, its like Shoal getting a few goals just as his contract was coming up and getting another one.
Otherwise starting team is ok, SDJ on bench makes sense if fitness is not 100%.

Comment #21Unchanged team seems a reasonable start. Yes, I prefer Haidara to Dummett and yes, I would rather see Aarons than Obertan on the bench although I didn’t think he was that good or Obertan that bad against Citeh.
One question: Seeing people get so het up about Pardew’s selections and subs bench, did you always agree with SBR’s or KK’s choices? Loved them both (KK diminished a bit since for me) but didn’t agree with some of their selections at the time, I’m sure.

I was told that the team last picked last week was because we were playing man c
so we are playing a team that is tipped to be bottom 5 come the end of the season , he picks the same team,
we are setting up here to nick a point , when this should be a game we should go out and dominate , show some attacking spirit you knob ,
arrrrrr I hate that man

Comment #31Look at Villa’s front 3 they all have pace to burn against our slow as hell backline !!!
We have pace against their slow backline as well so it could be quite an open game as both teams are terrible at the back !!
We always seem to play well against Villa so I think a 2 -1 which will be harder fought than it needs to be !

Comment #34Would liked to have seen Aarons on the bench especially ahead of Obertron, but until the game kicks off I think we should hold our breaths as to whether we’re trying to nick a point, although he’s got a clean slate a defensive performance today and a display even half as bad as Palace last season next week will have the crowd on his back, I think he has to go for it this afternoon.

Comment #35Disappointed in Oba being on the bench, not surprised Aaron’s isn’t a sub and we probs won’t see him agafn.
Lb always a f ing Lb, why?
It’s obvious Pardew doesn’t trust any player in his squad unless there a starting 11 player.
How many youth or fringe players have broken into the first team under Pardew?
Or how many players have progressed under Pardew?
It’s a complete waste of players having a squad of 24 if your only willing to give just over half a chance, not sure on last year but the previous two seasons we used least amount of players in the league.
Then he winged our squad isn’t big enough or good enough!
Htf would he know?
He doesn’t play them!

As a I’m not a coach or manager I’m not best qualified to comment, but I still can’t understand why Haidara played all the pre season games and looked ok, yet Dummet has got the nod, what made Jonas a firm favourite despite needing to be dropped then all of a sudden an outcast, why on earth is Obertron on the bench despite his clueless, headless chicken like performance against City.

Same question you have just been asked. What would be your 11 from the options available?
You like to trash talk but never seem to put forward your alternative.
Aarons is a young player finding his way in PL football. SDJ coming back from injury. Ferrayra again a young player. Yanga, Tiote n Cisse injured.
Put yr money where yr mouth is son.
