Newcastle Target Left Out Of Celtic Squad Yesterday

Celtic suffered their first defeat of the season yesterday as they went down 1-0 at Inverness, and it’s interesting and been pointed out to us by one of our readers – that Newcastle target Virgil van Dijk wasn’t in the squad.

Virgil-van-Dijk

Virgil van Dijk – not in Celtic squad yesterday

And when you think that Neil Warnock  told Robbie Savage and Darren Fletcher on BT Sport yesterday, that Alan Pardew had told him that Newcastle’s tenth signing would be announced today – that’s kind of interesting.

Eoghan O’Connell scored an own goal in the second half, and that was the first defeat in the league for what was a much changed Celtic side yesterday, in fact the Scottish powerhouse made 10 changes to the side that drew at Maribor 1-1 the previous Wednesday night.

Celtic face the Slovenian side at home in the second leg of their Champions League qualifier on Wednesday night, and they rested some of their top players yesterday.

There was news a couple of days ago that van Dijk had been affected by his being linked with a number of Premier League clubs this summer – including Newcastle and Southampton – and he could well have been rested because of that, and he would be ready for Wednesday night’s important game against the Slovenian side.

But of course if his signing for Newcastle is imminent, as Warnock said yesterday, he would not have played yesterday.

This could be a case of putting two and two together and getting five of course – but at the very least it’s interesting.

What do you think?

If we are serious about mounting a top 6 finish, we have to stop gifting opposition the ball with bad passing, and we have a few who does that to much. Williamson keeps hoofing it upfield, even when he aint under any pressure. Sissoko fails to hit teammates 10 feet away, although I guess he would be beyound our team if he actually had great passing with what else he brings to the team. Anita, Gouf and Dummett also makes bad passes to often. Isnt this something that we should be able to train the players in fairly easy? Playing pig in the middle allot in training and so on?. I can see that we try and play it in triangles with the way our players move off the ball, and we did have an ok possession percentage, but its always the same players who end up giving it away needlessly.

On topic… I have no idea if this guy is any good. I trust Carr, but what we need now in my opinion is a few seasoned players to settle in straight away. Someone like Ashley Williams in defence and Benteke in attack would do. It probably wont happen, because Williams fall outside our age policy and Benteke is injured. Add to that, the fact that they are both probably too expensive and its clear to see that I wont get my wish. But I just feel that signing someone like Wellbeck or Wickham in attack or this Celtic guy for defense, wont make much difference to our team at all.

Valle…from when I used to watch the games I remember movement was the main issue and one of the reasons wh we gave the ball away do often.

…Anita was a great passer of the ball before he came here!

There’s a question for you all to answer

Who would be happiest fan right now us or Everton.

In the two matches everton have taken the lead four times yet drawing, yes they have scored but they didn’t win.

The only time I will be concerned is when in a match we don’t create any chances.

15-20 a season forward is all that’s missing.

    This Virgil van Dijk who is only tested in the SPL – which is not better than the Danish Superliga – will cost us the same as Boumsong;

…and we all know how that went.

Jesper… Yah, Anita was a good passer in Holland, but it seems like he just cannot get used to the fact that the game is faster here. Often he plays to someone who is under pressure because he takes so long passing the ball that the opposition have read the situation. I agree that our movement used to be bad, but to be fair to Pardew, (And im not a huge fan) we actually looked like we had set up our tactics to play in triangles, the way our players off the ball moved. We just didnt have the skill to really see it through, because we lost the ball once it got to one of the players I mentioned earlier.

Celtic fan here. Celtic play euro playoff 2nd leg this week. Ten players changed yesterday from first leg so I wouldnt read anything into it. Cant see VVD leave this year unless he really pushed for it. If we make the chamos league I cant see that happening, even if we dont I still see him being in glasgow another year. He is a quality player that will only get better. He’d be excellent beside an experienced centre back. Very composed on the ball, good pace and an exceptional athlete. I’d be surprised if he wasnt in the Dutch squad in the near future

Van Dijk was left out the starting 11 yesterday. Along with Gordon, Denayer, Lustig, Izzy, Johansson, Stokes, Kayal, McGregor and Berget.

We have a big game on Tuesday and Ronny was saving his players.

Valle – Exactly!! Our passing is atrocious! Has been for ages. I don’t understand how Pardew can overlook this every season. We are really hopeless at passing 9 times out of 10.

Piggy in the middle for 3 hours everyday for 6 months should rid that from their system forever yet we still see ridiculous misplaced passes every game.

Not even team in League one pass it as bad as us and no wonder we even get thumped in cups etc.

It should be as simple as this, You pass badly in the game constantly and you will get dropped! Simples yet Pardew plays the same terrible passers every time, so they keep doing it and never see their mistakes.

Jesperfugslang, what about all the other players that have went from Scotland to England and done well? Or good players from England that fail in Scotland?

Just because Boumsong was a diddy, doesn’t mean VVD will be one as well.

He’s a very good player on the verge of the Dutch squad. Despite a heavy loss this season and in last seasons CL, he’s looked very capable playing in the CL.

If you want him? You’ll have to pay for him. But £8m is a drop in the ocean to an EPL team. If he has one good season at Newcastle his price will double and he’ll go to a good team.

Sunday seems to be a strange day to announce a 10th signing.
I think Warnock is talking shite.
Not sure about the dutch CB,he,s playing at a poor standard.
If we signed a Whickam type player we would go back to a big hoof style of football,, i dont want that,or Whickam.
Dont want Genier or Remy, they obviously dont want to come here.
Would Walbeck be the answer,i doubt it.
Id go for Richards as our 10th signing, IF there is any credence in the rumour.

Celtic fan here, just to let you all know that the signing won’t be Van Dijk.

Celtic made 10 changes to the squad yesterday, so that the whole first team could get rested for the Champions League Play-off game against NK Maribor on Tuesday night.

Looking forward to seeing what players like Aarons, Abeid and Chucky do against the Gills over a full match.

All this speculation following Neil Warnock’s comment that we’ll sign our 10th player today, I’ll believe it when it happens.

Dutch lad good if we get him, now what about a proven striker in the prem. Do you think we are going to go after Welbeck, I mean the kids an England international and we know he can score goals. Why are we not trying to get him in the door at Man U don’t want him anymore.
