When Bobby Robson was at the club, we were (very) interested in signing Michael Dawson, when he was still at Nottingham Forest and before he signed for Tottenham Hotspur in 2005.
Michael Dawson – Newcastle interested?
At the time Bobby wanted to strengthen the defense, and especially the central defense, and we suppose the same thing is true at Newcastle now.
There is news in the Times today that Newcastle are interested in signing the now 30 year-old, although if this news is true it goes against the Ashley Blueprint, which is to buy younger players whose value will only increase.
But there is little future at Tottenham for Dawson, especially when new signing Eric Dier from Sporting Lisbon (£4M) played so well in the first two games at right back, and scored a goal in each of the games.
Why didn’t we go in for Englishman Eric Dier, whose longer term position is at center-back?
Hull City are favorites to sign Michael and the Time is reporting Newcastle are making a late move for the player, but we’d be surprised if Newcastle sign Dawson, who may still be expensive – even at 30 – because he’s English.
On the positive side Dawson has vast experience, and he has played 324 games with 10 goals for Spurs including 236 Premier League games with 7 goals – and he’s been capped by England 4 times.
If the news is true, it does show that Newcastle are concerned about the strength of our central defense, with Steven Taylor and Mapou Yanga Mbiwa being the backup at the moment to Newcastle starters Colo and Willo.
What do you think?

Comment #2Hes slower than Colo and Willamson !!
We need a bit of pace and power at the back although saying that he would probably be better than both of them !
Wish we had seriously went for that Dier or Maguire who went to Hull

Comment #5You are right about Dier but would rather Van Dyck than either Dawson or Richards who are too old/injury-prone respectively. In any case, Dawson is liable to the same rush of blood as Saylor every now and then.

Comment #6If we bought Van Dijk, and personally I don’t think we will.
He’d either come on leaps and bounds and be every bit the central defender we’ve been waiting for, or he’ll prove to be an expensive flop who flatters to deceive and is no better than Saylor or Willo.
Worth the risk?
I’d rather have a Vlaar, Alderweireld or Manolas and put aside the doubts.

Comment #7We were supposedly in for Dier but himself or his Dad is a Spurs fan so they were his preferred option, Lacelles isn’t too bad of a compromise and you all know fine well if we had signed Dier he’d be like the second coming of Titus Bramble under Par-doh!
