it’s an absolute nonsense not trying in the cups for all the reasons everyone on this blog has reiterated a thousand times (plus however many times ED brings up the same discussion point when trying to grab our attention when there’s no real news) but there really is no excuse now that the European powers that be are giving a Champions league slot to the winners of the uefa cup.

If we won a cup this year, we could go on to win the uefa cup the following year and play in the Champions league the year after, which in all honesty is the only way we’d ever get a Champions League slot again anyway unless of course Cashly cashes in and a rich arab decides to he wants Newcastle as his play thing.

So if that’s not a good enough reason to have a go in the cups then all hope really is lost

I didn’t have you down as a wish promoting the thought process blogger. Your so much bettert but you wrongly interpreted what Pardew actually said and as we both know he has enough deficiencies so why bother.
What he said in response to a question:
” Perhaps we at board level say what other boards don’t say – that the PL is the be all and end all, because of the television money.
We have said that the PL is our priority but of course we want to win a cup and of course our fans do. I want to get some cows on that field in Newcastle”.

He went on to say how disappointed he was to lose to Cardiff late on in a game they really should have won and we need to put cup football right.

Pardew is not Wenger or Mourinho but he’s not Allardyce either. We are where we are.
Happy to respond further when I have time.

Ian Toon, a reasonable summary of the message I hope Pardew’s issued.

The result should not be in question tonight against Gillingham, the only reason it is,is bcos we dont take cup games seriously, and the fact that we are so negative means any team has a chance against us.
We struggle for the majority of the game against the mighty Morecombe last season scoring 2 late goals, and i think Gillingham will probably be a slightly tougher game.
Most Prem teams would brush aside Gillingham,i bet we dont.
i say a boring 1-0 win to us

I voted for a win in Ed’s straw poll.

However, this all dependent on the team P45due selects and the instructions he sends them out with.

On paper we should easily cruise through to the next round, but we are NUFC remember!
