It’s obvious that Alan Pardew will play a changed side tonight at Gillingham (at least we think it is), and give a start to some of our fringe players, but exactly how many fringe players will start the game is a good question.
Massadio Haidara – could start tonight
Some reports are suggesting Newcastle will play their best team tonight, but we doubt that will be the case.
Here’s a possible starting eleven, which looks fairly strong on paper for the game tonight at Gillingham, and uses some of those players who have been subs in the first two league games:
Elliot
Janmaat Taylor (S) Coloccini (c) Haidara
Colback Abeid
Obertan de Jong Aarons
Perez
There are eight changes to the side that started at Aston Villa on Saturday, and it gives a chance to players like Aarons, Obertan and Perez, who have all looked good in pre-season – while resting some of Newcastle’s other players.
But maybe that’s (far) too many changes for the game tonight, although it looks a decent enough side.
And Pardew can always field a strong bench, so he can make changes in the second half as necessary.
What team would you start at Gillingham?
Comments welcome.

Comment #2Does anyone actually know who has travelled with the squad? I know there were reports that it was the same squad that travelled to Villa, but who travelled? Was Arma in the group, Chucky etc?
I’m not sure why Obertan should start, I’d prefer to continue with Cabella or Riviere instead of him. They are still adjusting to English football, and if they can notch, or put in sparkling performances it would undoubtedly help them.

Comment #4Don’t see why anyone needs a rest.
On the contrary. Alan Pardew has been banging on about the players needing 10 games to gel.
Play your full strength team and use this as 1 of your 10 games.
In fact play the strongest team in all competitions, barring injuries and be consistent with your tactics.

Comment #6I hate this lowering of expectations bullsh*t! What does the board take us for? mugs!?
We’re not stupid we’re know our chances are slim when it comes to silverware but bloody hell give it a right go, anything can happen. We don’t need this negativity and cautious tripe before a ball is kicked in the cup!
Pardew grow a pair ffs and be positive! Your negativity rubs off on the players, don’t you realize you tool.
Pardew you should say something along the lines of; “We should be giving Gillingham hell, they’ll try to make it tough but I believe this determined group of players will want to have some fun out there, play well and get the the points in the bag so we can progress into the next round. I would expect nothing less”.

Comment #8Obertan and Sammy will be in the team tonight. We will play crap, and will struggle. Gillingham will chase and harry everything while the cowardly ‘retreat’ is called by Pardew once again. We will slither out of the cup, and listen to the silver haired bucknut regurgitate all of his ‘we wuz tired’ nonsense. Instead of rallying a battle cry of ‘ATTACK’, this balloon has only ‘contain’ and ‘defend’ in his tactical toolbox.

Comment #9This team is better than “best Pardew team”very SERIOUSLY.I’m sure that couple of these players will eliminate some ineffective players of the first team.Support for Obertan,Abeid,Haidara and Steven Taylor(best duo with Coloccini-10 unbeaten games in the 5th place season).

Comment #10I doubt any other prem lge team would play defensive against a lower lgs team other than Pardew.
If we lose tonight then the attendance for the Palace game will be well down, and that sends a very early message to the regime.
We wont put up with anymore bullshit,we want results and decent football.

Comment #11Willo is gone for this match anyway and I prefer Haidara to Dummett anyway. The only changes I’d make would be to start Riviere to let the lad get a competitive goal (hopefully) unless Pardew is thinking of starting Perez against Palace as well.
I hope this is Obertan’s shop window.
