Pardew – All We Need Now Are Some Goals

9:00 am, Saturday, August 30th, 2014 by Dr. Ed Harrison · 195 Comments

Newcastle have played quite well in the first three games of the season, and in each game we have shown decent control of those games, especially in the second half, but we just haven’t scored enough goals and have one win, one defeat and one draw so far this season.

Alan Pardew at Oldham

Alan Pardew – mm

But that could have been a better record if we could have scored more goals, especially after two clean sheets in a row.

We are hoping we can score some goals today against Crystal Palace, and if we can do that we should have a good chance of getting our first league win of this campaign.

Manager Alan Pardew seems happy enough the way the side has controlled games so far this season:

“We have shown tremendous control of all three games.” “Aston Villa packed their defense, as did Gillingham, so we had to try and find a way which we haven’t yet.”

“Against Manchester City we had great control against the Champions, as they proved against Liverpool they are a very very unbelievably strong team.”

“So I have been really pleased with our control of games and now just really we need to finalize that last third action.”  “Get some real quality and get ourselves some goals, hopefully.”

Today is a good opportunity for Newcastle to show how we can win games at St. James’ Park this season, against teams who could be fighting relegation.

It’s a good test today to see if we can keep controlling games, but also rifle in some goals, and in the first three games we haven’t had a Newcastle player score a goal yet.

Hopefully that will be rectified today.

What do you think?

I`m not buying that…there are more than goals needed.

  • 2 Diggedydaws // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:03 AM

Which does anyone think we need more, Center forward or a Center half as I can`t see us bringing in both, think I`m guilty of wishful thing hoping for one of em!

  • 3 jayphoto // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:05 AM

Giving Manu some support rather than have him alone 40 yards ahead of the midfield might have helped against a packed defence Alan….
I fear pardews plan A, B and C all just rely on Siem De Jong somehow linking midfield to attack and scoring the odd loose ball and belter!
If SDJ gets injured its the second half of last season all over again for us!

  • 4 gaz 44 // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:08 AM

Won’t bring in a centre back or a striker unless we move someone out, either be mapou or hba, then we may possibly bring in someone else .. Pardew has already said that his roster is full and in this sense I feel sorry for him, Ashley has spent fairly well this year but still never put any of his own money in yet the debt we owe him never seems to go down even with all the free advertising… Would love it if he decided rangers was his best option

  • 6 Diggedydaws // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:09 AM

    @3

It`s the shape of CM that I honestly think is the root of all our problems.

I think we use them only as a route for passes inside to enable us to progress up the wings, they all offer only token protection to the CH`s and how often do they press the final third with any passes in to the channels?

  • 7 gaz 44 // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:09 AM

Jay, also agree with that comment although been impressed with cabella and feel when he gets to grips with prem may see him getting more of a central role

This is alan’s plan mate (talking about Manu)

“I think this game (against Palace) will be difficult for him because it’ll be the same(a packed defence like villa and Gillingham) I think it’ll be a penalty, a set play or maybe a shot from the edge of the area or a ricochet where we hopefully score.”

    That’s the masterplan….oh dear!

  • 9 ToonTiger // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:17 AM

Doesn’t that statement qualify for the response ‘no sh#t sherlock’

  • 10 Average_Contents // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:18 AM

As for helping Manu out up top….never gonna happen unless we change the system and style of play, 4-3-3 attacking not 4-2-3-1 defensively which is basically a 4-5-1 with the 5 super deep relying on sissoko and the other winger to push us upfield, what tactics alan your a genius

Alan Pardew on Crystal Palace, ”They have great leadership as in the board”, this is the same people who managed to alienate a guy who preformed miracles by keeping them up and installed a feel good factor at the place and replaced him with the least inspiring of the old dinosaur brigade, Alan Pardew is really an oracle on all things football.

  • 15 Jail for Ashley // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:27 AM

Colin will park buses everywhere he goes and come away without any points a majority of the time, lets see how many times he loses this season with a ricochet or a solitary penalty.

I might be slightly mad here , but he is saying villa packed there defence , didn’t we play with 4 defenders and 2 dmc 3 if you count goofy, as I’m not sure what his job is right now

  • 21 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 30, 2014 at 9:33 AM

    Jeff,
What does Warnock parking the bus have to do with anything? It will make things harder, but a good manager would be able to devise a strategy and a plan to get past that. That is his job. If he can’t work out how to break teams down this is going to be an awful season, as I imagine most teams will park the bus, and hope for a break.

Certainly at least half of the Prem sides would be happy to come here and leave with a point.

    Jeff

You mean like us? Hoping to nick a goal on the break then defend for our lives? This tactic is ok to a point but NOT EVERY SINGLE FCUKING GAME! Even the most ardent of pardulites must be able to admit that surely? That’s all we do and how parsnip can say other teams pack their defence and midfield is most definitely the pot calling the kettle as highlighted by our ineffective form up top due to Manu being on his own with little support

Might I suggest you watch the games instead of listening to how parsnip says we play

Prime example….arsenal away 3-0 he said we played well and offered a “fret” yet to all and sundry we offered fcukall and played shite, I’m not saying we expect to win but at least have some sort “of go” but to then lie about it afterwards is pathetic and YOU believe the shit!

This is dreadful, and exactly the norm for Pardross. Defend a hope for a luck goal or flash of individual skill.

What dead brain hasn’t realised is that due to not committing too many bodies forward, he’s making it a lot easier for their players to contain our attack. Players don’t need to think about being caught out of position as much.

    He truly is a prat.

  • 61 tequilamag // Aug 30, 2014 at 10:26 AM

AC parking the bus is spending the game defending, The game against City was a pretty open affair and we dominated possesion away to Villa. I am sure there will be games away from home we play a defensive game hoping to nick the points with a counter attack but to describe the last 2 games as parking the bus flies in the face of reason.
Last season we dominated Palace at home and took 90 minutes to break them down. Away we beat them 3 to nil. All lucky goals I suppose

we finished 5th , sold no one added one player , and dropped 10 places , infact we were in the hands of other teams , preying they would lose so we would stay up, people talk about our attack being poor , but you can tell we only train one day a week on it , but defence , we train 4 days a week and we conceded the 4 worst that season, take a look at our defensive record since he has been here , it is poor to see the least , but that’s just HBA fault

The season we got into EL – not saying we shouldn’t have strengthened, but if you look back to that time, there were a few youngsters seemingly ready to make the breakthrough and lots of whingeing about not giving them a chance.

Unfortunately, they didn’t make the breakthrough (Ferguson was one of them and probably Vukic too but can’t remember all of them) and we had way more than our share of injuries.

    Just putting things into perspective.
It’s not as black and white as some like to opine.

Only the team is black and white.

I did say they were in free fall when he got sacked,if they had stuck with him they might have had a season like ours, the thing is though nobody expected that team to finish 5th in his 1st season, nobody. So that means he got more out of the players the whole season, they over achieved. If you only add 1 player to that squad with the extra games of Europe things aren’t going to go well, plus the injury nightmare we had.And how the hell do you know what day’s we train what?

If we don’t play defensive, containment football can you please explain how since the start of 2014 we’ve failed to score in 66% of our matches? Surely with this attacking, open playing style you suggest we play the goals would be flying in? Did we convert the dominance we displayed over villa into goals? No, because the possession was in our half mostly and around the halfway line and on the rare occasions that the midfield did get forward they looked shall we say tentative.

I agree I don’t expect us to go gung-ho every game as that’d be suicide but come on man, villa away? We played containment football hoping to nick a goal which by the way is how we play EVERY game

  • 78 Mister Tuff // Aug 30, 2014 at 10:55 AM

Mojo – for a Toon supporter coming on here giving it large with the insults – you really need to get your facts right.
You stated “We had a worse start last season ”

Well the true version is no we didn’t -whether you want to believe it or not. The first two league were a walloping from City and a no score draw against the Hammers. So that is 1 point from the first two games -same as this season. (we also had a League Cup win at Morecambe).
So could you please explain your statement that 1 point last season is worse than one point this season.
    Duh………………………………..what a dope.
You need to be factual about the Toon -you clearly have a lack of knowledge about the team.
You really need to change your game – could I suggest ladies wrestling!

I won’t presume to say I know how Jose does it!
But I know he doesn’t do it by playing two DMS at home with one up front.

My response to Jeff was due to his name calling and his one day saying we’re going to win next day they’ll park the bus. It’s like listening to Pardew himself who thinks the fans are idiots but Jeff just calls us idiots.

Yes I support the team and I’ll shout for them but it breaks my heart watching them play, most are capable of playing in a much better pass and move style but look lost and are going through the motions.

I hope we win, i really do. People say give Pardew 10 games which we can but if after 10 games were playing catch up with a possible new manager everyone will say “he shoulda went earlier”

Fair enough we can’t expect a five nil win but I want to see us go for Palace, really cause them problems and TAKE the win, not sit around hoping something will happen.

  • 84 Mister Tuff // Aug 30, 2014 at 11:01 AM

Please we need to get our fact right. I see no problem calling someone a cnut. Cnut is another way to spell Canute – as in King Canute.
    Extract from Wikepedia:-
Cnut the Great[2] (Old Norse: Knútr inn ríki;[3] c. 985 or 995 – 12 November 1035), more commonly known as Canute, was a king of Denmark, England, Norway, and parts of Sweden.

  • 85 toon kk // Aug 30, 2014 at 11:02 AM

Well the only way we’re going to get anything out of today’s game is hoping for a 0-0 draw. I suppose we’ll have to rely on 0-0 all season.
Poor manager, tight owner, average squad with a poor defence and strikers and strange thing is a lot of fans think we are capable of getting in the top six..

  • 86 geordie157 // Aug 30, 2014 at 11:03 AM

Think we should make a bid for Nastasic or at worst take Richards on loan with a view to a perm deal.

  • 87 tequilamag // Aug 30, 2014 at 11:07 AM

AC, I would dispute that we only kept possession in our own half and around the half way line. We all know the second half of the season was poor but the season as a whole we recorded either 6 or 7 away wins. We certainly did not park the bus at Man U away did we. The only game I would suggest we did was away to Spurs which was totally backs to the wall..
It is a fair point to criticise the lack of goals so far but nobody can say we are not creating chances.
For today I would be surprised if there area lot of goals but it will not be because we are parking the bus. Palace will be looking to defend to hit us on the counter the same as they played last season.

    Lononderry – previous post.
I’ve got this awful feeling that Balotelli could be the signing of the season – if he behaves himself. He’s definitely a good footballer, knows where the net is and terrorises defenders. Just what we need at the moment.

Two good shouts there mate I’d definitely take nastasic, what an improvement he’d make to our flaky defence

Holtby or Kagawa anyone? Either would offer more than we currently have going forward imo and Holtby wants first team football! Him and nastasic/Richards would make this a very good window….I have faith in cisse if we can get the supply to him, same goes for Manu too

    Mister Tuff
Well the true version is no we didn’t -whether you want to believe it or not. The first two league were a walloping from City and a no score draw against the Hammers. So that is 1 point from the first two games -same as this season. (we also had a League Cup win at Morecambe).
So could you please explain your statement that 1 point last season is worse than one point this season.
    Duh………………………………..what a dope.
You need to be factual about the Toon -you clearly have a lack of knowledge about the team.
You really need to change your game – could I suggest ladies wrestling!

When i say we had a worse start last year i don’t mean just on the pitch results wise, with Cabs refusing to play at City and the negativity that brought we were in a far worse state last year compared to this, there is none of that negativity around the team this year. And i would try ladies wrestling but your wife is the champion and i don’t fancy that much, why don’t you post a link to a photo with a not very funny caption on it in your next message like you normally do,that one always ceases to make me smile.

  • 124 Lilongwe Geordie // Aug 30, 2014 at 11:39 AM

    Optimistic,
It is being broadcast in Africa on Supersport 5.

We have to win today. Absolutely anything less will be a very poor result. I expect he will stick with Manu and the 4231, rightly or wrongly. To be honest, if this is the formation he wants to use, I’d prefer him to stick with it.

With a group of new players we can’t afford to chop and change formation regularly. A lot on here were asking for this system, so let’s have a bit of faith in it.

However we need to play it higher up the park. We need all the team pushed higher up, so that easy area has support, not just Manu. The only problem there is our only centre half with the pace to play like that is not in favour, and on performances, probably rightly so. As it is, without a bit of pace in the centre of defence we will see the game stretched, and people lacking support.

Remy – if Chelsea are interested today there’s no chance. He would prefer to be their third choice than our centrepiece.

Micah will be good for us if injury free.

  • 161 Tsunki // Aug 30, 2014 at 12:40 PM

To be fair to pards, that’s a pretty accurate statement. Its always difficult to play a team that knows its down a few rungs from us, they have to rely on clogging the defence, long ball, kicking us up in the air, attrition football. Its only in the second half of the season when they really need points to stay up that they open up play a bit and invite a hammering. The better teams dont lack that confidence to come at you from day 1, so with a new manager desperate to imprint a non-losing job-saving start , I expect Palace to do exactly as Pardew says. If we can somehow crack them openstraight outof the traps and get an early goal, we could get 2 or 3 by the end as they are forced to stretch. If its goalless at 60 minutes though Pardew will close shop early in case they break our weak defence, and it is weak, lads. Its virtually the one we had at the end of last season.

  • 163 Mister Tuff // Aug 30, 2014 at 12:43 PM

If we go out and attack Palace we should get a result. If Percy plays his normal over cautious game we’ll end up getting beat in the order of 2 -1.
Will be looking at if we do score -was it as a result of team play or individual play.
Also will be interested in whether Gayle/Zaha will have ol permed hair twisting and turning all over the place -getting outstripped for pace.
Danger if we do not get offside traps correct -ie permed hair not in line to make up for his lack of pace.

mister tuff —– well thats the problem , ive seen gayle destroy better defences than we have, and if pardes decides to take that route we could in fact get battered. Pards has to get it right. if he he is looking to catch them on the nap and take advantage the back 4 must be switched on coz gayle is as dangerous as anyone i have seen to seize his moment . he done it numerous times last season when he played a big part on palace staying up.

  • 169 Tsunki // Aug 30, 2014 at 12:54 PM

Mr T – Going off our current scoring technique, Im guessing that we will win 3-0. Goal 1 will bounce over Palace keepers head after an overhit sporting backpass by Sissoko. Goal 2 will be goal kicked off the back of the retreating Williamsons head after another failed floated cross. Goal 3 will be a stunner, rolled gently into the Palace goal by a ball boy while the visiting keeper rolls around on the floor after having his eyes bored from his head by Pard Vaders Death Stare.

  • 170 JP...from The Rock // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:01 PM

I too believe Pardew is relying solely on SDJ to be our saviour all our problems. Knowing his injury record he’ll no doubt be injured for lengthy spells resulting in another poor season.

Tbh I am quite sick of hearing Pardew blab on about the same things and yet not showing that he is capable of mixing up what he has now to improve our chances in games.

We are so boring and predictable it’s no longer fun watching us play. We rely too much on the wings to create something when in reality our wing play is poor and more drilled to defend and track back than attack.

Our midfield is also too defensive and Riviere up front on his own (a role he has never played) is not doing him justice and needs support from another striker beside him, maybe someone like Ayoze Perez or give Ferreira a shot up front and let’s see what he’s made of.

We had better score at least a goal (and not an own goal ffs!) or Pardew should be sent packing ASAP! Enough is enough with his dull negative anti-football tactics!

    Pardew: ” we need goals”

    Naaarrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

it worries me how little some of our supporters know about football,

what worries me more , is they would rather stand up for a guy who is failing than try and save the club

Someone posted the number of games SDJ has played in each of the last few seasons. It showed that he does not have a bad injury record. Last season he had a collapsed lung and he still managed to play plenty of games. His injury proneness is a myth.

I have posted it a few times dunno where this myth has come from

  • 178 Mister Tuff // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:31 PM

Tsunki – what a rubbish assessment of the game -the ball cannot be in play if the ball boy plays it onto the pitch -it has to played by a player. Apart from that you might be right.
I would add there could be a touchline brawl if Percy starts his death stare stuff – I reckon Warnock will mimic Percys’ touchline dancing jig -Percy will then try his death stare – which will not work -so he’ll then encroach on Warnock and stick the nut on whilst uttering “ya owld c**t”.
Ref will then send Percy off.

Ah right it was probably you i saw it from then.

Strange that people have got this idea.

  • 180 optimistic prime // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:36 PM

Pardew must have been practising his death stare in the mirror and killed all his brain cells!

last season he has some issues with a lung but still managed 28 games

  • 182 Tsunki // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:37 PM

Mr T – thanks for the correction about ` in play ` you are correct, but what if play was alreadybin progress and the ball boyrolls a second ballin, going in off one of thekeepers loose eyeballs before the ref spots and blows his whistle? I haveheard of spectators and even a dog and a beachball scoring a legitimate goal before, nothing is impossible at nufc.

  • 183 Mister Tuff // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:41 PM

Tsunki – I know about the beach ball -whats this about a dog scoring. You might be onto something here.

I see van Dijk is pushing for Celtic to let him leave. Hope its not us that are looking to buy.

Dont have a good history with buying scottish league defenders and dont see how he will be any different

  • 188 welshgeordie9 // Aug 30, 2014 at 1:55 PM

I hope pardew starts with a strong attacking line up today.

  • 189 Tsunki // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:02 PM

We could sign Pudsey. Apparently his film was a bit of a dog …. sorry.. so he could be signed for a bargain.

  • 190 JamesToon // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:02 PM

    Official lineup:
    4-2-3-1
    Krul
    Janmaat Williamson Coloccini Haidara
    Sissoko Colback
    Cabella De Jong Gouffran
    Rivière

    Finally Haidara is starting!

  • 191 welshgeordie9 // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:03 PM

Don’t annoy me today now pardew with your tactics especially on my birthday.

  • 192 Blackley and Brownlie // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:04 PM

We’ve shown tremendous control of games playing with only one man up top, for sure. We need to capitalise on that a little bit, if I’m honest. We’re going to go for a no strikers scenario today and hope to completely dominate possession, a little bit. It’s not a good situation for a striker at the moment and Manu’s finding it difficult getting to grips with the game here, if I’m honest. But he’s been great for us and if we play him in midfield we just think having players around him will give him a boost, 100%.

Jeff’s not that daft. He wouldn’t have used the Tyne Tunnel to get to SJP.

He’s not stupid altogether. The Tyne road Tunnel wasn’t built when he was a kid – he’d have gone via Jarrow and took his bike through the pedestrian tunnel.

  • 194 JamesToon // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:06 PM

    Subs:
Elliot, Dummett, Saylor, Anita, Obertan, Aarons, Perez

  • 195 welshgeordie9 // Aug 30, 2014 at 2:06 PM

If we don’t score today with that line up i will be screaming very loud.
