Newcastle Could Sign One Of These Three Center-Backs

After Newcastle’s rather pathetic performance in defense yesterday, when we somehow managed to concede three goals against an ordinary looking Crystal Palace side, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Newcastle are said to be desperate to sign a center-back before Monday night, when the summer transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle in for Toby Alderweireld

There was news yesterday that Newcastle target Virgil van Dijk had asked Celtic to let him move on from the Scottish giants to a club in the Premier League south of the border, and his fee is thought to be around £8M.

And there is news in the Sunday People today that Newcastle are also after Belgian International Toby Alderweireld, who was a target of ours before he signed on at Atletico Madrid last year at this time, for around £6M from Ajax.

And there have been persistent rumors over the summer that Newcastle are keen to bring in Manchester City defender Michah Richards for around £4.4M, as City try to reduce their wage bill and unload some of their fringe players, as manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted their squad is just too big.

There’s news that Micah may end up at Sunderland on loan for the season.

Our choice of those three would be 23 year-old Virgil van Dijk, who stands 6’4″ tall and can score goals from set pieces, and then we would take Toby Alderweireld as a second choice.

But with both Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley at the game yesterday, they could have seen for themselves two big weaknesses in this new Newcastle side.

Our defense was far too porous, and we still had trouble scoring goals, although we did end up with three goals yesterday, but two of them came from defenders.

The to men cannot have been too happy with the display yesterday,  and at the end of the game, after giving up an equalizer with two minutes to play of the seven minutes of stoppage time – the players were booed off the filed.

We hope we can bring in a center-back before Tuesday morning rolls around.

MA would have been delighted with what he saw, a team taking a point against another mid table club. We looked perfectly capable of a 17th place finish so everything’s rosy really.

As for signings we know Mbia isn’t leaving this window so forget about another defender, I also doubt a striker will come through the door now that Remy has moved to Chelsea.

We tried but we couldn’t get him over the line

All this continued talk about bringing in another striker, before Chucky has kicked a ball in the Premier league, are people really that naive as to believe Cashley would sanction it?

As for a cb, regardless of the garbage coming from P45overdue the number 5 and 12 shirts are vacant for a reason imo.

No matter who we sign we still have pardew as our manager which is the main problem for us.

That’s very true Ryan, but it doesn’t look as if that’ll change anytime soon.
So in the meantime, far better central defenders is the best we can realistically hope for, isn’t it?

I thought we were dross yesterday and pardew has to take responsibilty. One new unproven striker upfront on his own at home against palace. Also pardew got a side pipe everytime he spoke about de jong it looked like we had luuk back yesterday imo. Cabella was ineffective and sissoko also garbage. I actually panicked everytime palace went forward!
I genuinely think ben arfa could’ve impacted that game yesterday and broke them down. I know alot of people want him gone but if he behaves and works hard we need him on the bench as I still think other than aarons we don’t have alot of attacking options. Whats the craic with with that chucky kid, potentially 6mill and hes in the youth squad?
Three games in and I think we need to improve drastically or else we’re in for a torrid time. As for which centre half I’d get 2 of the 3 at least and a striker but I personally think we’re done in this window.

@switch365 yea that’s true,i don’t think ashley will sack him. Our defence were really poor yesterday so yea realistically what we can hope for now is for us to sign a better central defender.

There is a 99% chance we will sign no one. It’s all down to wages. Richards is to experience as to injury prone. The other 2 are to much for mike Ashley to buy.. striker wise who is there now with premier league experience? Hernandez from man utd on loan? Personaly I think a new manager would get the players back on track like Ben Area etc.. Rolando Arons was brilliant yesterday will be the next Newcastle player at the world cup..

Ed – we would definitely not take Van Dijk over Toby. Van Dijk definitely feels like a a Boumsong. Toby is class. Push all three over the line and bite into a bit of TV money! Keep Mapou and shift out Willo, Collo and Saylor

I dhave Toby over the other 2 any day,
Unfortunately i dont think we,ll get anyone OVER THE LINE.
We,ve been afer a CB for a month wothout any success so i doubt we will bring in one in the last day.
Remy gone to Cheslea for just over 8M.
Thats peanuts for a proven striker.
Normally if you pay peanuts you get monkeys, and thats what we will end up with, Pathetic.
