After Newcastle’s rather pathetic performance in defense yesterday, when we somehow managed to concede three goals against an ordinary looking Crystal Palace side, it shouldn’t come as too much of a surprise that Newcastle are said to be desperate to sign a center-back before Monday night, when the summer transfer window slams shut.
Newcastle in for Toby Alderweireld
There was news yesterday that Newcastle target Virgil van Dijk had asked Celtic to let him move on from the Scottish giants to a club in the Premier League south of the border, and his fee is thought to be around £8M.
And there is news in the Sunday People today that Newcastle are also after Belgian International Toby Alderweireld, who was a target of ours before he signed on at Atletico Madrid last year at this time, for around £6M from Ajax.
And there have been persistent rumors over the summer that Newcastle are keen to bring in Manchester City defender Michah Richards for around £4.4M, as City try to reduce their wage bill and unload some of their fringe players, as manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted their squad is just too big.
There’s news that Micah may end up at Sunderland on loan for the season.
Our choice of those three would be 23 year-old Virgil van Dijk, who stands 6’4″ tall and can score goals from set pieces, and then we would take Toby Alderweireld as a second choice.
But with both Mike Ashley and Lee Charnley at the game yesterday, they could have seen for themselves two big weaknesses in this new Newcastle side.
Our defense was far too porous, and we still had trouble scoring goals, although we did end up with three goals yesterday, but two of them came from defenders.
The to men cannot have been too happy with the display yesterday, and at the end of the game, after giving up an equalizer with two minutes to play of the seven minutes of stoppage time – the players were booed off the filed.
We hope we can bring in a center-back before Tuesday morning rolls around.
