We don’t know how much the report can be relied on, but Goal is reporting this morning they understand Newcastle have won the race to sign Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid – a player we scouted while he was at Ajax until last August.
Toby Alderweireld – have Newcastle won race to sign this player?
Other clubs reported to be interested in the Belgian International include Arsenal, Sunderland, Monaco and Southampton, so if the GOAL report is accurate (who knows?) then Newcastle will have done very well.
Alan Oliver in the Sunday People reported today that Newcastle were in for the 25 year-old, who had only limited playing time in Madrid last season, and is looking for a move away from Atletico, and would welcome a move to the Premier League.
The GOAL report suggests the Belgian is keen to join his two former team-mates Vurnon Anita and Siem de Jong, who are now both at Newcastle, and we have to think he got glowing reports from them about Newcastle United.
Sunderland are also said to be in the race for Toby, but there are reports today the Black Cats could be getting 26 year-old Micah Richards on loan from Manchester City for the season.
Newcastle fans are getting over a less than good performance yesterday, when we somehow managed to concede three goals against Crystal Palace, and our defense looked as leaky as a bucket with (big) holes in it.
And we weren’t too much better up front, as our three new forwards – Siem de Jong, Remy Cabella and Manu Riviere – all struggled, although there are reports that Siem was not fully fit.
The Dutchman certainly played like he was not fully fit, and the only shining light was the superb performance of substitute Rolando Aarons who was brought on after 67 minutes and the 18 year-old scored one and made one to put Newcastle 3-2 up with just two minutes to play in normal time.
But we couldn’t hold onto the lead in the seven minutes of stoppage time the referee added on – mainly because Palace had been wasting time when they had been ahead for most of the game.
But now we are hoping that Newcastle can bring in a striker and a center-half before the transfer window closes tomorrow night.
We need both those positions strengthened.
