It’s not looking good for Newcastle bringing in either a center-back or a striker in the three hours or so left of this summer’s transfer window.
Toby Alderweireld – having medical at Southampton
One hope was that Newcastle could possibly sign Belgium international Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid on loan for the season but Sky Sports is reporting that Toby is undertaking a medical in south Wales.
That’s consistent with the news last night that Southampton had moved ahead of Newcastle in the race to sign the former Ajax center-back.
There was also news earlier today that Micah Richards has travelled to Fiorentina to have a medical and complete a loan deal to the Italian club.
And Michael Keene, Manchester United’s young center-back who has played for the first team this season is said to be moving to Burnley – and the England youngster could have been a decent signing for Newcastle.
The other target we were after was Virgil van Dijk but it’s getting very late now and we would have heard something about him today if there was a chance of a move to Newcastle.
Its looking very much like we’ll not bring in any players today – with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa moving to Roma on loan for the season.
We were also linked today with Matija Nastasic, the 21 year-old talented Manchester City center-back, but Sky Sports is reporting the Serbian International wants to stay at City for the season and fight for his place in the first team.
Watch for Alan Pardew tomorrow to tell us it’s been a very successful transfer window – and we suppose he’s right in a way – but it seems it will take time for some of our new signings to adjust to English football.
And we may have trouble this season putting the ball into the back of the net.
