Going After This Striker Shows Newcastle Are Desperate

Newcastle have been linked with Jermaine Defoe a number of times in the past, including last summer, but if the news is correct today, then Newcastle are in for the striker who will turn 32 next month.

Jermaine Defoe – in England colors

Defoe is going to be leaving Toronto FC after only five months on board, and it comes with the sacking of former Blackburn defender Ryan Nelson at the Canadian club.

Toronto’s General Manager Tim Bezbatchenko has confirmed the club have received an offer for the striker from an undisclosed club – and the reports are that it could be QPR or Newcastle.

We can understand why Harry Redknapp would want Defoe at QPR, after he worked under him at West Ham Portsmouth and Tottenham – when Harry was manager there – and they have just lost Loic Remy to Chelsea yesterday.

But it could show Newcastle’s desperation to get in a proven Premier League goalscorer,  that the Magpies may be the club in for the 5′ 6¨ striker.

Jermaine has lost none of his goalscoring abilities while in the MLS,  and the 55 times capped England International (19 goals) has scored 15 goals in 16 league games for Toronto.

This is what Bezbatchenko said:

“We have received an offer and have discussed it internally. When you have scored as many goals as he has, and have the reputation and background that he has, then it’s not uncommon to receive these offers.¨

“We have received multiple offers before, and in the course of this year, so I want to confirm that we are in talks.¨

We suppose if nobody else is available then Defoe would be better than nothing and he can score goals and could score foals for Newcastle this season.

But if Harry Redknapp is back in for him, you have to think moving back to London would be a better option for Jermaine than moving to the north-east and Newcastle.

That’s always assuming that Newcastle are in for him – but there aren’t a lot of other strikers available on this final day of the transfer window either, and he could probably do a job for us for a couple of years.

And when you think of the chances we have created this season in our first four games,  a natural goalscorer like Jermaine could have put a few of them away – for sure.

But we would still be very surprised if he ends up at Newcastle today, with news that both Arsenal and Aston Villa are supposedly interested in the striker.

What do you think?

Why not – always scores against us – might as well have in our side as someone else’s.

Hernandez clearly isn’t wanted at Man U and we would be mad not to go for him. Preice could be as little as £10 million FFS .

Not entirely sure why Henandez has left Man U for Real Madrid, one bench for another. Does that make Jese available, or even better, we should get young Jack Harper off them. What a pair he and Arma could be in the future!!

    BPC,
He is confirmed as having gone to Real Madrid. No chance we could have got him.

    Jamsha,
They pull that one out every transfer window.

Looks like my hospital visit wasn’t as painfull as transfer day.

Come on lads our movement today will be like on the pitch, slow sluggish and only reacting to other clubs.

Mickey Mouse wears Mike Ashley watch FFS and if anybody hasn’t noticed this is exactly what he wants! When people are kicking off next week about Pardew and lack of quality signings and there’s news front and back page it will read “Mike Ashley SD and NUFC owner”
Insert any line you want but look again “Mike Ashley SD and NUFC” his crap gets free advertising everytime thetes a crisis at the club and it’s exactly what he wants.

NUFC needs help at the back end, not at striker.

Get H B-A out of town & prepare for the fall out if Capt. Colo gets dropped.

Seriously, why can’t we spend what we make as a club?

What is going on here? It’s ridiculous.

I’v been sat infront of this TV since 6am.

So annoying to here them spout on we have signed the most players but just had as many leave the club. Who do they think they are conning? 3-4 million net spend with what we have made over the past 12 months?

Lol we need to sell and remove wages before we buy? What a joke this is.

    Scottie,
1 goal in his last 14 appearances in the Prem for Spurs. As for still banging them in, it is the MLS, let’s not blow it out of proportion.

Someone said earlier the fee would be around £5million for him, haven’t seen anything on that myself, but that is a ludicrous amount. Much rather give Arma a chance. We have got just about enough to survive, and I reckon Arma will do just as well as Rivi for goals this season if played.

Defoe is a proven premier league goalscorer good deal if true although unlikely. My preference would be Danny Ings and Nastasic both young with loads of potential.

No way is this us. QPR replacing Remy.

I think our business is done, maybe a CB. We are never willing to meet clubs asking price on deadline day. Look back….

Simply cant believe the amount of fans screaming for a 20 goal a season signing then start moaning when Defoe is mentioned… Maybe 31 but quality and class does not know an age limit… Why we never signed him a few years ago is beyond me, considering how much money we have wasted on forwards since Alan Shearer retired…
    Get him signed up…

If this guy is a good signing why did a MLS club manage to pick him up? Its basically division one football out there (went to a few Toronto FC matches), we got plenty of players who cant score don’t need another.

@Shaker Shakrah = “Of all people , why go for a 32 year old striker”? Because he’s way better than any other options we have at the club, that’s why!! How old was Shearer when he retired again?
