This Defender Could Still Stay At Newcastle

Our defense didn’t look too good on Saturday, so it wouldn’t be in Newcastle’s best interests if we allow Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to go out on loan for the season,  if we don’t bring in another center-back today.

Toby Alderweireld – Saints favorites to get him?

Talks are going on to get Mapou out on loon to either Roma or Marseilles, but it wouldn’t be good if we do that and reduce to three the number of experienced center-backs we have at the club – in Colo, Willo and Steven Taylor.

So it could be a balancing act today for Lee Charnley with our best chance of a center-back seeming to be Belgian defender Toby Alderweireld, who can play at center-half or right-back.

Toby wants to play this season after getting limited playing time last season at Atletico Madrid, and Atletico are willing to let the 25-year-old leave on loan, with a view to making it a permanent signing next summer, but from what we can tell from last night’s news – Southampton are now in the driver’s seat to sign him.

Here’s a good question – how come the Saints are beating us to some of our transfer targets?

There are other English clubs also said to be interested in Alderweireld, and have talked with his representatives over the last couple of days, and they include Arsenal and Sunderland.

If we cannot get another center-back in by 11:00 pm tonight we’d be very surprised is Mapou is allowed to go out on loan.

What do you think?

Southampton have more financial clout than us. EVERYONE does. Ashley wont pay the wages. Same old story when it comes to signing the players we actually NEED.

Newcastle’s options are seemingly running out, with former loanee Loic Remy having yesterday joined Chelsea.

Pardew, however, maintains the “targets” are there for the club.

But the 53-year-old has again reiterated his belief that there will need to one or more outgoings to create “room” for a new arrival.

“It’s not about targets now, it’s about finance,” said Pardew. “The targets are there. It’s about whether we can do the finance.

“It’s possible that we need to create some room.”

I do see what Pardew is saying, there. We have 28 senior players on the books, all receiving wages, so i accept that we need to get rid. Simply not registering them means we are still paying wages.

Thing is I don’t think anyone wants our players, they have had all summer to move on the dead wood and or fringe players to create the room to build a squad.

Apart from HBA and MYM there has been little interest in what we have left.

This should have all been sorted weeks ago, Jonas isn’t even in Newcastle anymore but he is registered to play and receiving his wages.

This has to be very poor management, Jonas sits at home in Argentina because the club don’t want him to work for them anymore but will still pay him instead of finding him a move to another club.
