It was devastating news that Jonas Gutierrez revealed last night, that he was fighting testicular cancer, and that he had to start chemotherapy, and has already had the left testicle removed.
Jonas Gutierrez – in the famous black and white stripes
But the footballers are rallying around the Argentine left winger and there have been many messages of support sent to Jonas in his twitter account.
Here are some the messages that have been sent to him from some of his former colleagues that the Mail have just published:
Joey Barton:
“Heard the terrible news about Jonas. Wish him a speedy recovery. Great guy with a great family. My thoughts are with them all.”
Steve Harper:
“Buena suerte a mi amigo (Good luck my friend) Jonas with his battle with testicular cancer. Great lad and teammate who always gave 100% for the Toon shirt.”
Peter Lovenkrands:
“Can’t believe the news about my good friend Jonas. Testicle cancer. I wish you a speedy recovery my friend. #SpiderMan #Nufc.”
Papiss Cisse:
“Wishing @elgalgojonas a speedy recovery #braveman #JonasGutierrez.”
Yohan Cabaye:
Get well soon my man! @elgalgojonas.”
And Chelsea FC have sent their best wishes:
“We wish Newcastle’s Jonas Gutierrez a full and speedy recovery after he revealed he is battling testicular cancer…”
The Sir Bobby Robson Foundation sent his:
“NUFC’s Jonas Gutierrez has announced he’s receiving treatment for testicular cancer. Our very best wishes are with you Jonas.”
Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic is the patron for Ballboys, which is a for raising awareness for testicular cancer and the .
¨I just want to express my wholehearted support for Jonas. It is hard to see a fellow footballer faced with this illness. We often think as footballers we are super-fit and won’t be affected but this disease knows no bounds.¨
‘Jonas is a strong guy and I am positive he will come through this. He will have support from family and friends and players such as myself.¨
It is possible to overcome the disease and we know of at least two friends who have overcome testicular cancer .
Jonas had had a tough time of it in his career over the last year, and only played two games for Newcastle last season, as he seemed to be ignored by the club, and he went on a loan deal to Norwich City last January, but the Canaries were relegated.
And he was told not to return to training this summer by the club, and has been in Argentina, where the news a few weeks ago was that he was training with a personal trainer while looking for another club – and now this.
We send out our very best wishes to the 30 year-old, but would also like to see some visible humanitarian support coming from Newcastle United for their player.

Comment #41I would imagine the club have been supporting him in the background.
Wouldn’t expect a statement from them to be honest.
They’ll probably just say it’s a private matter or something along those lines tomorrow.

Regardless of anything, you need to put your “Spidermasks for Jonas” campaign into gear. I have tweeted nufc fans and put it on FB but the word should be spread.

Comment #45This shouldn’t be ambushed by those who just want another stick to beat the club with. And just what is “humanitarian support”? he’s not a war zone or an earthquake area. I suspect the club would have been involved ion his treatment arrangements had he stayed in the UK but understandably he preferred to be in his homeland. It’s not a good end to his career at SJP of course and I hope he makes a full recovery as many sufferers do these days. I’m sure many of the well-wishers today are those who gave him such abuse towards then end of his first team appearances. But few players ever worked harder than Jonas and that’s why he was so well-liked by most fans.

You and I and all other fans don’t know the private and confidential arrangements between Jonas and the club.
As Hubris as pointed out none of the players and staff have said anything public. Norwich haven’t either.

Comment #49I’d imagine questions about some kind of statement would have been near the top of Wendy’s agenda this morning.
I have no doubt the club is following protocols in what has been a private matter until now.
They have to be aware of Princess Diana syndrome, where the Royal Family stuck to the book and then looked to be dragging its feet. I’m not sure there ought to be a clamour for a statement, but it’s on most news outlets now, making the club’s silence open to questions.

Comment #50I think I am right in saying that Guti was named in our squad.
(If I’m wrong, ignore this post!)
The club must have known about the problem already and that he was not going to play, so to incl;ude him in the squad is a bit like saying he is still one of the family.

Comment #51Its so sad that people are loving this story because it puts the club in a bad light, maybe if they read the whole transcript of the interview they would understand more.Jonas didnt offer any criticism of Newcastle, who allowed him to go home for treatment , to be with his family. This is a none story based on a few snippits taken out of context.
All strength to him as he battles this dreadful disease – and shame on all who use this for another reason to bash the club.
