There was news yesterday that Nottingham Forest owner Fawaz Al Hasawi says he may buy back the two players he sold to Newcastle in August – goalkeeper Karl Darlow and center-back Jamaal Lascelles.
Jamaal Lascelles and Karl Darlow at Newcastle
It looks like that may be an option for Forest if they do get promoted this season, and of course under new manager Stuart Pearce they have made a great start to the season, and are top of the Championship with 17 points from their first seven games and are unbeaten.
Newcastle are bottom of the Premier League with just 2 points from our first four games.
The Forest supporters and the manager were not happy at all when the announcement was made they had been bought by Newcastle, but would be loaned back to Forest for the season.
This is what Al Hasawi told the Nottingham Post:
“I will make Forest stronger and stronger every year that I am here,” “Every year I will make the side strong, every year I will work to push Forest.”
“What we did this summer is sell two good players, in Lascelles and Darlow. Some people thought that we had just taken the money.”
“But we did not. We took the money so that we could buy more players for the club, so that we could make us stronger. We kept Darlow and Lascelles for the season and, with that money from Newcastle, we invested in the team.”
“Maybe next season we will sign them again, maybe we will even buy them back.” “In the future, you never know. If we go into the Premier League, perhaps we can talk with Newcastle.”
“We can perhaps loan the players again or even buy them back. Alternatively, we will buy other players.”
The only way Forest could buy them back is if Newcastle agree to that – and even if there’s something in the contracts which mentions this – Newcastle would still need to agree to it.
So if Darlow and Lascelles make good progress this season, we would assume they would be part of the Newcastle United first team squad for next season.
And if goalkeeper Tim Krul does move by the start of next season, Karl Darlow would have a great chance at Newcastle, and center-back is our current weakness in defense.
Newcastle currently have only three experienced central defenders – so if Jamaal can get a long run in the first team this season, he could be well positioned to do well at Newcastle next season.
We are also assuming that Newcastle can start picking up some points and move off the bottom of the Premier League. 🙁
