It was a very nice touch at the beginning of the game for the Newcastle players to walk out with T-shirts with Gutierrez’s name, his number 18 squad number and the words “Howay man, get well soon”.
Captain Coloccini leads out the Newcastle side this afternoon
As we found out last week Jonas is fighting testicular cancer, and is receiving chemotherapy at the moment, and he was operated on last October.
Gutierrez had been watching the game back in Argentina, and he sent a text to his pal Fabricio Coloccini thanking everybody for their support.
And after Newcastle’s terrific come back in the last 20 minutes from being two goals down, Fabricio had this to say to the Shields Gazette after the game:
“He sent me a text straight away after the game saying ‘thank you very much for everything’ – for Papiss and the fans as well,”
“He was emotional. I think it was very nice for him, and he wanted to thank everyone.” “At the beginning of the match when we came on to the pitch, it was a bit hard for me as well,”
“I spent a lot of time with him here, the other players as well.¨ “He spent a lot of time here. He gave 100% . He was very professional.¨
“It’s tough to see what is happening with him. We gave everything to support him.”
And Papiss Cisse, who scored two great opportunist goals for Newcastle in a terrific late cameo appearance, also showed off a T-shirt under his Newcastle strip after he had scored each one of his two goals – with the words “Always Looking Forward Jonas” on the T-shirt.
Papiss Cisse showing off T-shirt in support of Jonas
This is what Papiss Cisse said about Jonas after the game :
“Jonas is a big man. I remember my first goal in England, Jonas crossed for me to score a fantastic goal.¨ “My message is to keep going for him. Life is not finished, he needs to be happy and enjoy the rest of his life.”
We think the players should wear the T-shirts for every game in support of Jonas, in the same way the fans honor John Alder and Liam Sweeney with one minutes applause in the 17th minute of every game this season.
