The Newcastle fans have made a huge difference to the way Jonas Gutierrez feels, after he made his cancer public last week , and the fans have sent him a huge amount of messages of support.

In addition to that, Jonas had had messages of encouragement from football people all over the world.
This is what the 31 year-old Argentine International told the Chronicle about what he thought after Newcastle had told him earlier in the summer that he was surplus to requirements, and should therefore look for another club:
”I don’t want to say if they were good or bad, I can’t judge.” “What I can say is that it hurt me very much when they told me to look for another team after that I had the surgery.”
“I had been at the club for five years – that was tough.” “Everyone on the streets was asking me why I didn’t have hair anymore as I always had long hair.”
“That put me in a difficult situation, not because I didn’t want to tell, but because I didn’t want to tell my story to everyone one after the other.
“Since the moment I decided to make it public, I feel much better. I am free and calmer.” “I am very happy for what the Newcastle fans did, and thankful to the supporters of Velez Sarsfield and Almagro.”
“I am also thankful to all the people linked to football because I have received very nice messages from them. All this gives me more strength not to give up.”
We have taken the following from his Wikipedia entry – and it gives more information on his cancer and what happened:
On 16 September 2014, Gutierrez revealed that he was being treated for testicular cancer and had one final session of chemotherapy left, followed by two months of recuperation.
He had experienced pain in his testicles following a collision in a match against Arsenal on 19 May 2013. Following inflammation of the area in September and several misdiagnoses, he went for an ultrasound scan where a tumor was discovered and he chose to have surgery to remove his left testicle in his native Argentina in October 2013.
He returned to Newcastle a month later but was deemed surplus to squad requirements and was loaned out to Norwich City in January 2014 for the rest of the season.
After the season ended, he experienced liver pain and swelling of his lymph nodes following a holiday and was started on chemotherapy.
Until his interview in September 2014, Gutierrez chose to keep his treatment mostly private, and only a few close friends in Gabriel Heinze, Martin Demichelis, Ezequiel Lavezzi and Newcastle teammate Fabricio Coloccini knew of his condition.
Jonas has shown great courage in coming out and announcing he has cancer, and unfortunately we have also found out that it has spread to other parts of his body, which is why he has undergone the chemotherapy treatments.
