Mike Ashley has been quoted in the Independent as telling a reporter on Thursday night outside The Golden Lion pub in London’s Soho district, where he was having a drink with a friend, that if Newcastle lose the game against Stoke City on Monday night then Alan Pardew will be fired as manager.
Mike Ashley at Southampton – doesn’t look a happy man
That’s in stark contrast to the message that was put out following Newcastle’s 2-2 draw with Hull City last Saturday that patience was key, and Pardew would be given time as the manager to turn things around, and that his job was under no immediate threat.
That news was reported on Sunday and it’s thought the message was leaked on behalf of the owner himself.
However, Mike outburst in Soho on Thursday night is probably closer to the truth, and Alan Pardew only has two games at the most to start getting wins – draws are really not going to do it.
A defeat on Monday night may not bring to an end Alan Pardew’s tenure at Newcastle, but it seems to us he has to win one of the next two games.
If we lose both games that would be curtains for Alan, but there has now been so much confusion caused by Mike’s unsolicited statement to the Independent reporter, there’s a good chance that Newcastle will issue a statement today and at least attempt to clarify things.
Maybe the better way to put that is to clean things up, after Ashley’s statements outside the pub.
Whether the Independent will be the sixth paper banned by Mike Ashley in the last year – well your guess is as good as mine on that one.
But this will hardly help Alan Pardew and the players prepare for the game on Monday night at Stoke, and it’s another unwanted distraction.
It will be interesting to see if Alan Pardew holds his press conference today, and we wonder what the first question will be?
Mike did not hold his usual press conference before the game at Crystal Place on Wednesday night.
