We brought in seven players over the summer that are part of Newcastle’s first team squad this season, and of course one of them – Siem de Jong – is out injured until early next year.
Remy Cabella – hasn’t come through – yet
Daryl Janmaat and Jack Colback are settling in nicely and playing quite well, and Ayoze Perez is very young and he’s better than we thought he would be – and the 22 year-old already has eight appearances for Newcastle, although most of those are short sub appearances in the Premier League – Ayoze looks like a good acquisition for us and one for the future.
The players who have not produced yet for Newcastle are the following three:
- Remy Cabella – while Remy showed his skills and scored some goals in preseason, he has looked a lightweight so far for Newcastle and was dropped to the bench yesterday. His replacement Gabby Obertan had a decent game and an assist for that first goal against Swansea.
Apparently in training Remy is showing all his skills, but he needs to toughen up physically and not fall down when he gets a physical challenge. This lad’s still a good player, and although he looked a little dejected on the bench yesterday – it’s all part of his education, and it does take time for players to adjust to the English way of playing football.
Remy has to be handled carefully by manager Alan Pardew, because he can still come (very) good at Newcastle. - Emmanuel Riviere – has shown that he’s a very physical player but has found it hard to get goals in the Premier League, but he did score two good goals in the League Cup at Crystal Palace. Manu is adjusting to the Premier league and apparently he’s better when he has another striker playing alongside him.
That’s what happened yesterday when he came on as Newcastle played 4-4-2 – with Cisse and Riviere up front – and we looked a much more fluent team.
Hopefully Pardew will play 4-4-2 against Leicester City in our next game – and we may see Manu get his first Premier League goal in that game.
Newcastle didn’t bring in an established striker over the summer, and Papiss Cisse was injured, so Manu has been thrust into a starting position very early on in his Newcastle career, but we still think this lad can become a good player at Newcastle – certainly his character and temperament seem very good. - Facundo Ferreyra – we haven’t seen much at all of the 23 year-old Argentine U20 International – who was brought in on loan from Shakhtar Donetsk to give us more options up front, but Facundu has very rarely even made the bench so far this season.
Alan Pardew has said that he has had one or two niggling injuries that have hampered him in training – but he’s one player who just hasn’t shown through at all this season – so far.
If he can’t make the bench that doesn’t say much for the lad’s abilities, but maybe he’s just getting himself settled in, and can still come through for us this season.
But one reason we have not been a threat up front this season so far, is that these three players are taking time to adjust to the Premier League, and we have to hope all three start to come through for Newcastle (very) soon.
If they do then we could be in a decent position in the league by the end of the year.

Comment #89Ashley will undoubtedly change, as will Pardew, the longer they are at the club. People do, and they already have.
Ashley hasn’t acted rashly and Pardew keeps turning up for work and Newcastle have money to spend.
The mistakes are there for all too see in the harsh focus of the EPL spotlight. That’s undeniable and the fans are rightly vocal.
But I tend to believe Pardew when he says they are working hard to get it right, and I think as long as the fans make their feelings known, Ashley can be influenced, and that’s where the power to change things really lies.

Comment #91IF AP stick to an effective 4-4-2,
1) Cabella would be a good impact sub. His skills and pace might be useful for counter attack.
2) Riviere would score lots of goals with a 4-4-2 formation
3) Ferreyra – how can he prove himself if he doesnt being given any chances?

Comment #93Just had a quick look at the league table. We are 3rd bottom and Everton are 4th bottom.
We aren’t the only team under performing this season.

Comment #94Why did we not sign that Sakho that West Ham signed ?!?
He was only a couple of million plays similar to Remy him Riviere and Cisse would have been a more than adequate strike force to choose from

Comment #97Yeah 442 would seem the logical way to go with this squad of players and Cisse now fit.
Rivierre or DeJong when fit, and Gouffran as understudy alongside Cisse, who appears suddenly all important as an out an out striker now, as he has no viable challenger.
Flankers out of Sissoko, Cabella, Aaron’s, Sammy and Obertan.
Colback and Tiote in central midfield, who are industrious and combative, which is necessary because we have been overrun there in the past playing 442. Sissoko possibly in as understudy for either when injured or suspended. Anita seems too lightweight in a 442, unfortunately.
The back four sadly has fewer options and I tend to agree Colo is in decline, and that along with Willo, Tayls and Dummett, who are ordinary, makes us frighteningly vulnerable on the counter in a 442, and that certainly would need to be addressed in January, along with a capable target man and central mid.
I suppose he sets us up in a 443 to protect our beleaguered defence, as much as anything, when frankly, they really need to spend some money and strengthen it.

Comment #98No surprise seeing “ol permed hair” and Willo featuring on MOTD as how not to defend. Confirms a lot of opinions on here that they do not even get the basics of defending right. No surprise at all. Getting others to spend too much time babysitting those two is a probem encouraged by King Percy. It results in not enough desire to attack.
