It’s just great that Gabriel Obertan is not only playing well for Newcastle these days, but is also getting the credit he deserves, and maybe Saturday was the pinnacle of his career at Newcastle United, when he scored a terrific goal that gave Newcastle all three points in the league for the first time this season.
Gabby Obertan in action on Saturday
And Mike Ashley joined the players and coaches in the dressing room after the win, and a Newcastle insider told the Chronicle:
“You’d think we’d won a trophy considering the scenes after the game.”
That’s not a bad thing because the players will get to realize that at Newcastle they get the kudos if they stick in for the team and give 100%, which they really have been doing for these last five games.
And we saw some passion from Mike Ashley – maybe for the first time – as it was big news that Mike had spent over 10 minutes in the dressing room after the game thanking everybody for their efforts – that’s also a good thing.
Gabby’s had a tough time of it in the three years he’s spent at Newcastle, but maybe he has turned the corner just a little bit, and he was thrilled after the game:
“I’ve been waiting for a while to score at St James’.” “It’s been a tough season for me last year, and I’m glad to be back in the team and be useful.”
“I kept on working hard.” “It’s easy to train when you’ve got the coaches patting you on the back, but these moments by yourself … you have to work hard and dig deep.”
“I’ve always been confident in my ability. It might be a surprise for some people, but not for me.” “It’s a great feeling at the moment. It’s great – not just for me but for the team.”
“I know it’s been quite frustrating for the fans. I hope the first win gives them something to celebrate.” “We needed that win to get the confidence back, and I think we are going in a good direction right now.”
Certainly his excellent game on Saturday will have given him some confidence, and he’s a certain starter at White Hart Lane next Sunday – and that’s going to be a tough test for the lads.
Gabby has also showed some good character, in being to come back as he has done this season, when it looked like his career on Tyneside was over in May.
We are also buoyed by the spirit we see in the side, and that’s always good, especially when the side is struggling – which we have been this season – and all year for that matter.
Hopefully we’ll get a lot better by the end of the year.

Comment #1Excellent game? Your having a giraffe! Other than his goal he was terrible. He bottled every header, distribution was rubbish and apart from one shoulder to shoulder he won he was dire. He did do alot of running but that counts for little these days unless you play for pardumb. He looked good as every other player on the field was utter shi*e.

Comment #3The fact that Obertan is staring for us just shows what a shockingly poor, unproven, inexperienced and incredibly thin squad we have. We’re worse off than we have been for some time now.
You can’t keep selling good players and buying cheaper bargain bin players to replace them. It doesn’t work.
Also. You can’t achieve much with a man like AP at the helm. Sack that toss*r asap.

Comment #4Well done Gabby, you were slightly less sh!te than the other 9 outfield players we started with. It’s only taken you 4 years to put in a 6/10 performance. Quality.

Comment #5im pretty sure most fans are blinded by the silver devil ¨
he did not have a good game, other than him scoring he did nothing , he was lazy , not picking up runners, he forgot the ball and 3 times that I remember.
to be fair to him though, goofy was the worst player on the pitch.
whats this obsession with changing left backs, if he thinks hiadara is a better attacker, why didn’t he start with him? we were playing LC , a poor team at home
to be honest , I think its great, because if he continues to pick player like obertan and goofy ahead of some of the much better players we have, then he is signing his own death warrant at the club, Williamson will drop straight back in
don’t forget, we won a poor game against a poor team and we were second best on the day

Comment #6He scored a good goal and made one other run in the first half when Colo squandered it but other than that I thought he had another terrible game. I’ll be the first one to say I was wrong if he discovers some form, playing is all about confidence and clearly that’s what Pards is trying to do when he lauds him with compliments but he ain’t fooling me, he’s a headless chicken who completely bottles it every time he gets the ball.
Goofy had another below average performance, just running around is not going to cut it.
Dummett’s performance shows why we are targeting another LB, he looks Sunday league to me.
