Top French Striker Available – Are Newcastle Interested?

Andre Pierre Gignac has been a Newcastle target for a couple of years now, and his contract at Marseilles runs out next June, when he will become a free agent.

Andre Pierre Gignac – 28 year-old Marseilles striker

Gignac has scored 10 league goals in just 10 appearances this season for Marseilles, who are top of the French League, four points clear of PSG, and their striker has been in top form.

The news in France is that Marseilles President Vincent Labrune thinks they may be unable to sign the 28 year-old.

Labrune thinks he could leave the club:

“It’s going to happen because employer contributions and taxes have gone through the roof in France.”

“We would like to keep him, but it seems to me utopian to think that he will lower his salary to stay with us.”

“With his current displays, he is more likely to get better offers – but he loves the city and the club, so we’re going to talk.”

Arsenal and Newcastle are said to be the two clubs most interested in the striker, who turns 29 in December.

About 18 months ago Gignac rubbished reports he could  moving to Newcastle, and we’d surprised if the Magpies can be successful in signing the French International striker.

This is what Gignac told L’Equipe in August, 2013

‘You think I would say, having turned the tide, that I’m going? You don’t know me well.” ‘I have never wanted to leave – the links with Newcastle and the rest, it is all bulls***.”

‘My mind is always on OM and I let Jean-Christophe Cano (his agent), Vincent Labrune (OM President) and Jose Anigo (Sporting Director) know that.”

And there could be bids for the striker in January, so that Marseilles at least get something for their striker than lose him for nothing next summer.

However he is a key player,  and Marseilles are unlikely to let him go half way through the season, as they attempt to win the French League.

In five seasons at Marseilles, Gignac has played 158 games with 64 goals and 12 assists, and in the summer he will come at a decent price, although he may be too old for Newcastle.

What do you think?

We havent done that well with french strikers anyway.

I liked the way Danny Ings took his goal against Everton. I would go for him and off load Riviere and Ferrerya.

Unless it’s lacazette or Ben yedder we should move on from France.

Two more goals from Austin tonight, would be worth a look when Qpr go down.

Clint Dempsey is available on loan. Get him on board through March and we’ll pick up some points.

Looks like David Moyes may head to Italy to manage Inter Milan. That’ll be a shock isn’t it?

One worst thing that keep happening to us and deteriorate our seasons since 12/13 is bad injuries to our key players. It’s not just one at a time,it’s 3 or 4,at the same time.Still happening now as well, which may halt our amazing turnaround.
Our fitness, flexibility and pace was excellent at spurs. They all looked fresh and industrious.we were spot on in the air as well.Good to see some of our players back to their form too.Colo,s.tay and mussa were exceptional.Especially Colo and sissoko were vital to our incredible win.
The other exciting positive to take from the game is that our goals were well worked goals and lovely to watch, spot on with sweet passing. Especially the 2nd goal, world class cross from cabella and smart head finish from Perez. That is exactly what we need. That is how players confidence and self belief will get boosted. Now they all start to believe that they can score goals and win games.Big Big win,no doubt about that..
We will indeed enjoy the win throughout the week!!

Gignac is in excellent form. His work rate and movement upfront is very good.Even if he is 29,I’d take him b/c he got experience and will be free agent soon. If we can’t secure our initial top targets, he is the best option available. we better sign him in Jan and re-loan ferreyra to other club.
hoooooray Gignac,u r in blistering form!!

I would rather have goal machine Huntelaar, but I doubt DiMatteo would let him go.

santon03…Huntelaar ,not bad choice, but unlikely. HE is the one that bags all the goals at the moment.
    BTW what’s going with Dortmund??
They are in incredible free fall lately!!
Do u follow the German league?

Correct me if Im wrong but I think Klopp has changed his tactics a bit, opting to go with a more 4-4-2 formation, maybe not fitting well or just one of those bad patches. Atletico having a bit of an up and down time as well

what is the issue with him 29.
If he is any good he’ll only stay one season and move on to a bigger club anyway, may as well get some goals out of him.
If he’s crap we’ll ship in on with all the rest

I only saw one Dortmund game this season, against Arsenal in the CL,so can’t say much about the fxn.
They have several world class players with world class mgr,but struggling to find their form in the lg.
now the question is who to blame?
This is the best example why we should not blame ourselves for the poor start.
Dortmund are worst than us at the moment with world class players.

I think Dortmund suffers from selling their big name players and new players couldn’t score goals (yet).

    Two issues re Cignac

Firstly, up until this season, he was crap. Marseilles wanted rid of him and touted him around the various leagues with no takers. Ashleys policy is to buy under 26 so Cignac isnt going to be considered.

Secondly, it is doubtful whether he would hit the ground running if we bought him in january and we may need that. This is why I would prefer someone well versed in the english game. Someone like Ings or Rhodes, natural goalscorers.

They only sold one big player,Lewandoski, other than that, they add so many talent with what they already had.So I don’t think they suffered much in selling players,we ‘d be excited after watching klopp & Dmd

They indeed sold Goetze, but I don’t think that will be big miss as they replaced him with equivalent talent.

Only God knows at the moment mate!
