Newcastle Could Sign This Dutch Defender In January

It was revealed at the Fans Forum early last week that Newcastle had a central defender lined up as a replacement for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa – but because the loan deal to Roma took so long for the Frenchman – that second deal couldn’t be completed –  and at the moment Newcastle have just three experienced central defenders in the squad.

Virgil-van-Dijk

Virgil van Dijk Celtic center-back

We looked back on what was being reported in the last week of the summer transfer window, and there were a number of reports north of the border that Newcastle were close to signing Virgil van Dijk of Celtic – and one such report was in the Scotsman.

Virgil was a Newcastle target before he moved in the summer of last year to Celtic from Groningen for just £2.5M, and it seems that Celtic’s price for him is now around £8M, after the Dutch defender had a great first season at Celtic.

The Scotsman report was that Newcastle were considering a deadline day swoop for the Dutchman, so that’s consistent with what was said in the Fans’ Forum meeting – but we couldn’t get the deal done.

It would make a lot of sense to bring in a young center-back with the massive potential that Virgil has shown at Celtic, and if we can do the deal in January that would be great.

And there’s no reason why Newcastle couldn’t have followed up with Celtic in September, and even arranged for the deal to be completed in early January.

Money is still available at Newcastle,  since we have spent only about £3M net on players this year, and when the financial report is issued maybe early next year for the last financial year through June 30th,  it will be record revenues and record profits.

Virgil has played 65 times with 7 goals for Celtic since signing on for the Scottish giants last year.

But one thing that may see Celtic resist letting their 23 year-old center-back leave in January, is that at the moment they are only 4th in the Scottish Premier League under new manager Ronny Deila – and are 3 points behind Hamilton at the top, followed by Inverness CT and Dundee United.

But we do expect Newcastle to bring in some players in January to strengthen the squad, and Virgil could be one of the reinforcements.

Could have been any CB. There might not have even been a CB that we had lined up. Who knows ? I wouldnt be suprised due to the lack of communication and lies we have been told.

I still think if we get turned over by Liverpool we are still in the mire. Especially after QPR beating Villa.

I’ve allowed myself to get too positive this week and it’s dangerous. We still have Pardew.

Sorry ? How do you know Mr.Ferreyra wouldnt score in a brothel ? I think you are getting yourself mixed up with him. No-one knows how good he is and we did pay a fairly big loan fee for him so he needs to feature somewhere, otherwise, we should just terminate his loan.

This month is critical. We need 6-9 points at least before tackling December with some confidence and momentum.

Cant be doing that… Pardew will be a ‘manager of the month’ contender. Dont think that will sit well with the pardew out crew. (in need of a better word)- myself included.

So, because the loan deal to Roma took so long for Mbiwa the deal for Van Dijk couldn’t be completed.

For the sake of a year’s pay over budget, we’re down to the defensive bones of our Rs!

Surely there must be some slack built into the budget – most I’ve come across allow a bit of bunce to cater fot contingencies?

Surely Ashley can’t be running such a tight budget, or can he.

One thing’s for sure and that’ll be that whatever Celtic were asking for Van Dijk in the summer will have gone up now they know we’re pushed for cover.

But and that being the case, we won’t sign him and we’ll struggle with what we’ve got.

    Nice one Mikey boy!

Utter rubbish. Arsenal are signing him – and he’s extremely happy about their attention, so somehow I doubt he’s even an option for Newcastle.
