Newcastle Defender Could Leave In January

Italian International Davide Santon is still recovering from his knee injury,  and is expected to return to training in a few weeks time.

Davide Santon – returns to training – in a few weeks

talkSPORT are reporting the 23 year-old Newcastle defender is a transfer target for Italian club AC Milan, a club he supported as a boy.

Davide started his career under Jose Mourinho at Inter Milan at left back, and he was switched there by Jose after initially being a right-sided midfielder, and he had early success there playing 53 times for the Italian side and making his debt for Italy while only 18 years old.

That was in June, 2009 against Northern Ireland in Pisa, and Newcastle left-sided midfielder Shane Ferguson also played in that game.

This is certainly not the first time the Italian has been linked with a return to his homeland, but with Paul Dummett starting to play well in the left back spot, it will be interesting to see if Davide can oust the 23 year-old Geordie when he returns.

Roma is another Italian club that have inquired about Santon’s availability..

New AC Milan manager and former top striker Filippo Inzaghi replaced Clarence Seedorf in the summer, and has the task of rebuilding the side, and is reported to be interested in taking the defender back home to Italy.

Milan finished 8th top of Serie A last season, and out of the European places.

Davide is settled at Newcastle, and he has always said he would like to stay and see out his five year contract – which runs out in June of 2016 –  and a lot will depend on how well he plays when he returns from his knee injury.

With local lad Paul Dummett in good form and backed up by 21 year-old Massadio Haidara, and with the fit-again Ryan Taylor also able to play at left back, Newcastle suddenly seem well off in that position.

Returning to Italy and playing well there could help him get back into the Italian senior side, but if Newcastle are going to sell players – then it would be much better and safer to do that in the summer, and not half way through the season.

Davide has played 93 times for Newcastle, with one goal in the three years he’s been on Tyneside.

I’d sell him in a heart beat, I’ve never rated him.

If they offer 10 million, grab it but AC Milan are broke and would probably only want him on loan.

I say switch him to CB he has the pace amd ability to do it. Or switch to RB that way we have solid competition for places and ability to cover injury, suspension or loss of form.

Santon at CB? Are you serious? The guy has a yellow streak a mile wide, and is a very poor ‘defending’ full back, without the added aggression and physical tests of being a CB. Jesus.

Santon as a CB are you having a laugh, he is pathetic defensively, never rated him, he is an attacking full back, who cant cross, when was the last time you seen him put a decent cross into the box?? I would like to see ferguson get some game time, he has an excellent left foot, and great pace, looked good for ireland last few times i watched them,
