Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez was last night named the Outstanding Sports Personality by the Buenos Aires legislature.

The former Argentine International has been fighting cancer for over a year, and it was just announced by his doctors that he has beaten the disease and is currently cancer free.

Jonas is training at San Lorenzo, and is expected top return to Newcastle United early next month.

During the ceremony, Gutierrez was joined by Newcastle United captain and teammate, Fabricio Coloccini, and other well know Argentines.

This is what Jonas said after receiving the award:

“I don’t want to be an example, I simply try to help those who are going through a similar situation. I do not fear cancer; It is not a bad word, nor is death. It should be positive and be dealt with great fortitude. The important thing is to look always forward.”

“The only bad thing with chemotherapy was that it made me lose the hair that I had.”

Jonas mother was at the ceremony and she revealed her son had a seizure when only 3 years old:

“At 3 years old, Jonas had a febrile seizure, and was paralyzed on the left side of the body. So he began to do sports, to play football on a little pitch.”

Many people who have fought cancer try to minimize its danger to other people, and that’s what Jonas is doing in his comments.

And they also come away from the experience with a new positive outlook on life, and it quickly sorts out life’s priorities – life seems to become a lot simpler and a lot easier.

That seems to have happened to Jonas, who has become a hero to many people.

Here are a list of other photographs taken at the award ceremony last night.

It will be great to have the 31 year-old back at Newcastle United next month, and maybe two of the bravest men currently in football – Ryan Taylor and Jonas Gutierrez – could play together for Newcastle again.

    Top man Jonas, top man!

    @SuperShearer from last:
    I think Gus dropped Janmaat because it was his mistake that lost them the Euro qualifier game last time round. Harsh, but that’s the way it goes..

    Delighted to hear Jonas is in remission – Wasn’t Collo supposed to be injured?? Cant be much wrong with him, if he’s out and about in Argentina!! Or is that a new form of “Rehabilitation??

    he looks ridonculously different. Is it bad that with better hair I have more faith he’ll be able to deliver a half decent cross every now and again…
