Newcastle To Lose Three Players For AFCON Finals

Senegal beat Botswana at home tonight 3-0 in the African Cup of Nations qualifying game, and Papiss Cisse scored Senegal’s second goal after 25 minutes, and they finish one point behind Group G winners Tunisia who beat Egypt 2-1 at home.

There are seven groups and the two countries who top  their groups qualify, along with the best third placed side and the host country – which is now Equatorial Guinea after Morocco pulled out because of Ebola considerations.

The Ivory Coast are also through by drawing 1-1 with Group D leaders Cameroon – and they finish in second place in Group D on 10 points, and four points behind Cameroon.

And in Group D third place DR Congo beat Sierra Leone 3-1 at home and finish with 9 points and they also qualify as the best 3rd place team.

Algeria lost their  100% record losing 2-0 at Mali,  who finished second of Group B and also qualify for the finals.

So with Algeria, Ivory Coast and Senegal all qualifying Mehdi Abeid, Cheick Tiote and Papiss Cisse will in all likelihood be away for the finals,  which start on 17th January and the games go through February 8th, when the final takes place.

If either one of those countries reach the final, their players could be away about five weeks – right in the middle of the Premier League season.

The players are due to report for training with their countries up to two weeks before the games begin.

We suppose we’ll have to again rely on our youngsters – and they haven’t done too badly in the last five games have they? 😀
